Beyond the DouroThe waterfront city of Porto is the gateway for cruising the verdant valley of Portugal’s Douro River.

Slicing its way through soaring hillsides carpeted in vineyards, the Douro River in northern Portugal is emerging as the next big thing when it comes to cruising the waterways of Europe.

With our first luxury all-inclusive cruise set to depart from Porto in the European Spring of 2016, the brand new Scenic Space-Ship, Scenic Azure, will cruise round trip from World Heritage-listed Porto to Vega de Terron across the Spanish border.

Porto’s reputation as one of Europe’s most attractive urban landscapes is well deserved and as a starting and end point for river cruises there is much to see and do.

Brightly-coloured homes cram onto every available space on the hillsides and spill down the slopes to the waterfront. Lively promenades with rows of outdoor restaurants buzz with tourists, shoppers and locals.

Clusters of traditional rabelo cargo boats - used for centuries to transport the world-famous port wine still produced in the valleys – wait for day-trippers.

Once dubbed the river of gold thanks to its crucial role in the thriving port wine industry, the Douro meanders out of Porto and winds through vineyard landscapes to the olive and almond groves of the Côa Valley which hint at the culinary delights to be found throughout the region.

While the brand new itinerary takes in the traditional sights and spectacular terraced terrain of the Douro Valley, it also offers an exclusive insight into a world untouched by modern tourism.

Snaking its way into the thick forests of the Varosa Valley, the Varosa waterway stems from the wine-growing hub of Regua and offers visitors the chance to see villages that have remained unchanged for decades.

In this off-the-tourist-track region where the first king of Portugal was educated, see the cobblestoned medieval bridge and fortified tower at Ucanha which was Portugal’s first toll bridge. Though its exact age is unknown, the bridge is rated as a national monument. In the rustic town centre, spend time in the local taverna which has served as a local meeting place for centuries.

Drive up the slopes of the Varosa to the mountaintop village of Tarouca where the sprawling Monastery of Saint John still stands since being built in 1139.

Famed for its discovery of the ceremonial ring depicted in Christian legend, a visit to this remote community is like stepping back in time and an opportunity offered exclusively by Scenic.

Returning to the Douro River, Spain lies tantalisingly close by and once the ship arrives across the border at Vega de Terron, a short coach ride through flat cattle farming country brings visitors to the Spanish World Heritage-listed city of Salamanca.

Known for its 1,000 year-old university and

grand Baroque architecture, Salamanca is a diverse, lively city where up to 30,000 students live and study.

Iconic Spanish experiences abound with a tapas lunch accompanied by flamenco dancing and music. Sightseeing highlights include many churches, palaces and palatial homes with the elegant 1729 Plaza Mayor at the heart of the city and one of its most beautiful spaces.

Further along the Douro, where at certain times of the year poppies, lavender and other wildflowers cascade down the slopes of the valley, steep farmlands give way to the low-lying, sparsely covered hills of the Côa Valley.

The second tributary excursion – also

unique to Scenic itineraries – focuses on the astonishing brand new Côa Museum where architectural treasures only discovered as recently as 25 years ago are on display.

Pre-historic cave paintings, rock art and artefacts such as pottery and spear heads from the Palaeolithic era were discovered only in the late 1980s during the construction of a dam. The museum dedicated to the important discoveries was just opened in 2014 but separate to the new building, the wider site itself is considered to be one of the most important pre-historic, open-air art galleries in the world.

Due to the vast number of artefacts found, visitors here also have the unique opportunity to handle many of the discoveries and

A new ship for a new cruiseThe brand new Scenic Space-Ship –Scenic Azure – will debut on the Douro in 2016 offering the same all-inclusive luxury experience that is synonymous with Scenic.

The state-of-the-art, custom-built Scenic Azure will be the only ship cruising the Douro Valley which has full-sized, private outdoor balcony suites and Scenic Sun Lounges – giving guests the chance to experience stunning views in comfort, regardless of the weather.

With only 96 guests, this intimate river cruising experience offers butlers for all guests, a choice of six dining venues, a fitness and wellness centre and a hair salon and spa.

Her spacious, elegant common areas as well as Scenic Azure’s vitality pool and Sun Deck bar will set the benchmark for next-generation river cruisers on this exciting new itinerary.

join fire-making workshops and other exceptional activities at the award-winning, hi-tech museum.

Here in the barely inhabited Côa Valley, Scenic guests can choose to canoe the Sabor River in this archaeologically important region.

Back in Porto, on the final days of the new 10-night itinerary, more cultural experiences unique to Scenic are on offer including a visit to the picturesque fishing village of Afurada at the mouth of the Douro, to enjoy a seafood and wine tasting with the local fishermen.

Free time on the itinerary creates the opportunity to browse the famous cork shops and stroll across one or two of the city’s six elegant bridges that have come to symbolise Porto.

A short trip on the river’s traditional rabelo vessels offers one way to see the iron bridges up close, but criss-crossing them on foot is also popular with most pedestrian traffic headed for the double-decked, arched Dom Luis I bridge.

The Dom Luis I crosses the river between the centre of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia where dozens of port wine warehouses climb up the other side of the embankment, creating an illuminated, night-life enclave in which to try many different varieties of the famous wine.

Built on a bend in the Garonne River, the World Heritage-listed Bordeaux region is renowned for producing some of the world’s best-known wines and is surrounded by pretty villages and lush riverside vineyards. But its network of freshwater lakes, sprawling National Parks and sandy beaches on the Atlantic also make it a magnet for outdoor activity lovers.

To take advantage of the many natural wonders on offer in one of France’s most popular holiday regions, Scenic Freechoice has an array of options for you to choose from when you visit the region on your luxury all-inclusive river cruise.

Climb the Dune du Pilat Join the one million visitors each year who tackle the climb to the top of this natural wonder near the upmarket resort town of Archachon.

Make your way up 154 steps on the side of this 500m wide, 107m high sand dune and be rewarded with sweeping vistas of the Atlantic, surrounding forest, Cape Ferret headland and perhaps be one of the lucky ones to spot dolphins in the Bassin d’Arcachon.

Watch the battalion of colourful paragliders launch from the southern end of the dune before setting off back down the hill.

Terres d’Oiseaux and Gironde EstuaryThe 116-hectare nature park Terres d’Oiseaux is set on the border of the Gironde Estuary and offers a wonderland for bird lovers with over 125 species to be found in this important spot for migratory birds between the Pyrenees and the ocean. Take a guided visit and enjoy a beautiful nature walk through forests and some of the waterways that form part of Europe’s

largest estuary covering 635 kilometres.

In Arcachon, you can explore six kilometres of walking trails along coastal and freshwater wetlands at the Le Teich bird reserve. With 20 waterside hides and platforms from which to view more than 80 species of birds, the reserve is considered one of the best in France.

Cycling the wine countryGrab your Scenic state-of-the-art e-bike and join a 30-kilometre guided round trip along the Captain’s Road. Your riverside adventure will take you through quaint villages and pretty countryside before returning to the ship where relaxation on the Sun Deck awaits.

In the Médoc, take your bike to the grand 110 ha winery of Château Lagrange, which produces a famous red of the same name which is one of an elite group of wines that were officially classified by Emporer Napoleon III in 1855.

The champagne bottle cracked over the bow of the newest next-generation Scenic Space-Ship in April with popular Australian author and comedienne, Kathy Lette, doing the honours in her role as ship’s Godmother at an official riverside ceremony in Vienna, Austria.

Scenic Jasper, the 11th in the Scenic Space-Ship fleet, takes cruising the waterways of Europe to the next level offering the largest suites on the rivers, a panoramic Sun Deck complete with vitality pool plus the opulent 44 metre square Royal Panorama Suites and 33 metre square Royal Suite with private balconies.

Scenic founder and Chairman Glen Moroney joined Kathy at the christening event along with international media and travel industry leaders.

“We are proud of the innovations we have made on Scenic Jasper. We’ve taken what was already an exceptional design and are now able to offer our guests a real heightened sense of luxury with the largest suites on Europe’s rivers,” Moroney said.

As part of her official christening duties, new Godmother Kathy officially named the new ship.

“I was honoured to be asked to be godmother to the stunning Scenic Jasper,” Kathy said.

“Not only is river cruising the best way to see Europe - no sat nav malfunctions, no ring roads, no traffic jams or cancelled trains – but this sleek new cruise ship is so luxurious it should be renamed HMS Hedonism.”

The 85 cabin Scenic Jasper will sail 8 and 15 day itineraries on the Danube, Main and Rhine rivers.

Q&A WITH WERNEY BEYER...YOU’VE BEEN SAILING THE DANUBE AND RHINE FOR ALMOST TEN YEARS, WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PORT?

Rudesheim along the legendary Rhine Gorge is one of the most famous wine towns in the worlds and well known for the Riesling grape and just happens to be my hometown.

WHAT STRETCH OF RIVER DO YOU ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO PASSING?

The entire Upper Middle Rhine Valley where you can see historical castles, steep vineyards, the majestic River Rhine and wonderful scenic beauty – that’s the place to be in Europe.

WHAT RESTAURANT DO YOU RECOMMEND TO SCENIC GUESTS WHEN THEY VISIT GERMANY?

I like to tell our guests about the historic Bavarian sausage restaurant Wurstkuchl in Regenburg, to enjoy some Bratwurst with sweet mustard, sauerkraut and a Bavarian wheat beer.

WHAT’S YOUR SHOPPING TIP FOR GUESTS WHEN THEY GO ASHORE?

I recommend the Birkenstock shops for the famous German sandals at good prices (between 40-50 Euro) and you can find them in Nuremberg, Bamberg and Rüdesheim.

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE SCENIC SHORE EXCURSIONS?

A bicycle tour through the countryside from Breisach in Germany’s Black Forest to Colmar in France. Along the way we pass little French villages in Alsace and have a cheese tasting at a local market in Nieuf Brisach – just stunning!

I do believe it’s time for another adventure Scenic started some 29 years ago as a coach touring operator in Newcastle, Australia. From those humble beginnings we quickly expanded our repertoire, revolutionised the European river cruise experience and blossomed into award-winning travel experts. We now offer journeys across every continent in the world, and that’s something we’re immensely proud of.

To see how far we’ve come in everything we do is truly colossal, but it was land touring that sewed the seed of our existence, and it’s still an important part of what we do to this day.

When Christopher Columbus accidently stumbled upon America in 1842, the Italian explorer thought he’d dropped anchor in Asia. Little did he know that he’d arrived at the ‘New World’, thousands of miles of endless ocean from where he thought his compass was guiding him. And so began our fascination with this grand and diverse region.

To this day, the epic expanse of the Americas continues to intrigue and enchant, beguile and wow. From the snow-capped mountain ranges that pepper Canada, to the great open roads and giant cities of North America,

right down to the tropical forests and untamed natural beauty of South America. Two continents, 35 countries and around 954 million people – you could spend your lifetime trapesing the infinite asphalt and only just scratch the surface of what’s on offer.

The sheer size of this landscape is daunting enough. Where do you go? What do you see? Do you follow the common tourist footfall or stray from the crowd and take the path less travelled?

It helps to have an expert by your side, and that’s where we come in. Our journeys through the Americas strike a very precise balance between luxury and adventure, which makes for a truly unforgettable travel experience. While the explorer in you yearns to discover what’s beyond the horizon, we also pay homage to your discerning taste for great food, fine hotels and comfortable travel. What’s more, we don’t charge you extra for those once-in-a-lifetime experiences and essential sightseeing highlights – they’re all included alongside exceptional accommodation, flights, breakfast every morning and an array of dining experiences.

To accompany the upcoming release of our new 2016 Americas brochure, we’ve put together a preview of what you can look forward to, and we show you everything that Christopher Columbus missed out on.

While parts of South America are left to nature’s unruly influence, others have exhibited an innovative charm to accommodate cities teeming with locals and travellers alike, but this continent’s diversity doesn’t end with geography. THE GOLDEN LANDDiscover the exotic beauty of Myanmar, which until recently was untouched by tourism.

British poet Rudyard Kipling said it best: Myanmar “is quite unlike any place you know about.”

Though known as Burma at the time of Kipling’s visit in 1898, today’s holidaymakers to the South East Asian nation are discovering just how right he was with its floating gardens, unspoilt beaches, glittering pagodas and thriving Buddhist culture putting it on the must-visit hot list since military rule ended in 2011.

More and more overseas visitors are being drawn to Myanmar’s fascinating cultural attractions both on land and water – numbers to the ethnically diverse nation have jumped by one million each year since tourism restrictions were lifted, reaching three million in 2014.

Though new infrastructure, cruise ships and hotels are furiously being built and opened to cater for the world’s fascination with the Buddhist nation, Myanmar’s tourism industry is still developing. Though many international hotel chains are building new accommodation in cities and regional resort areas, demand for western style facilities continues to race ahead of supply in some regions.

Its biggest cities – Yangon and Mandalay – attract the bulk of holidaymakers at present with their proliferation of ornate, gold-leaf gilded pagodas and monasteries making it easy to see how the nation became known as the Golden Land.

Few architectural wonders anywhere embody the golden splendour of Burma more than the Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon’s major tourist attraction. As one of the most famous Buddhist shrines in the world, Shwedagon attracts pilgrims from all over Asia and though debate thrives around it origins, is believed to be more than 2,500 years old.

Topped by a stupa covered in 7,000 diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, many believe the best time to see this glittering landmark is at sunset when the last rays of sunlight are caught by a giant sky-high emerald before its twinkling lights shine across the city.

Known for its leafy avenues and colonial shopfronts and apartment buildings harking back to British rule, Yangon is Myanmar’s largest city with a population of 5 million. Teahouses serving cucumber sandwiches and afternoon scones survive as remnants from the colonial era, while Bogyoke Aung San Market leaves visitors in no doubt of the modern diversity of culture that now characterises the former capital. With more than 2,000 shops, this vast covered market has the nation’s largest selection of jade, traditional Burmese and Buddhist costumes, jewellery and ethnic textiles.

The second largest city, Mandalay, sits on the banks of the Irrawaddy River, where cruising the rural heartland of the country grows ever more popular each year. New ships are appearing with many being custom built exclusively to sail the waters that Kipling romantically called ‘the road to Mandalay’.

Like much of Myanmar, religious monuments dominate the sightseeing agenda in Mandalay, with the Golden Palace Monastery and Kuthodaw Pagoda among the most visited.

South-east of Mandalay, in the centre of the country, Inle Lake is fast becoming one of the most visited regions outside the city centres. The freshwater lake in the highlands, 900 metres above sea level, has gained fame for its fascinating floating garden beds where locals grow vegetables as well as distinctive traditional long-tail boats and the fisherman who sail them standing up using a unique one-legged rowing technique.

Private long-boat rides on the tranquil waters of the lake do a brisk trade at sunset, where you can sip your evening aperitif under world’s longest teak bridge, the U-Bein.

SCENIC AURAThe all-balcony, boutique Scenic Space Ship - Scenic Aura - is set to be the Irrawaddy’s most luxurious custom-built ship when it welcomes its first guests cruising Myanmar in September 2016.

The 22-suite ship has been designed with Asian cruising in mind with a rooftop vitality pool, Sun Deck bar and tropical design motifs throughout its luxury interiors. With only 44 guests, Scenic Aura will set new standards for service on the Irrawaddy.

From the moment you step aboard you will be immersed in our signature of all-inclusive luxury with a choice of dining options, complimentary self-service laundry, a passenger lift between decks, a gym and wellness centre, plus a tranquil day spa retreat for on board rest and rejuvenation.

As with all our cruises, all-inclusive means your transfers, your exclusive excursions, all meals and beverages and your own butler.

Lavish villas built on stilts over the water are becoming the hotel rooms du jour in the region. Hotels with lush waterfront gardens and outdoor dining offering views of the passing fisherman, island temples and the surrounding hills are springing up around the shore.

As well as its natural beauty, Inle Lake, is gaining a foothold with visitors because of its central position as a base for interesting day trips. At the nearby Red Mountain Estate Vineyard, the local Pa-Oh people are producing Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz from grapes imported from France in 2002 and its popular restaurant lures visitors from the Lake for both lunch and dinner.

A trip to the famous golden Buddha-filled cave in the Pindaya region, short treks through fields and villages as well as

adventures in local fresh food markets are possible from your accommodation at Inle Lake. A road trip to the ‘forest of temples’ at Kakku, where more than 5,500 1,000-year old stupas rise from the plain, and seeing the sunken stupas at Sagar are also among more astonishing sights nearby.

With its tea shops and tri-shaws, monks and monasteries, water-bound temples and treasures from its colonial past, Myanmar is one of the few destinations in Asia as yet untouched by rampant development and heaving commercialism. Could there be a better time to plan a trip to the golden land?

GETTING SPIRITUAL

IN SOUTH EAST ASIA

A dash of contemporary charm in a world filled with ancient splendour

In amongst the typically colonial-era style ships that make the journey from My Tho to Kampong Cham, there’s one modern vessel that stands out from the crowd: the Scenic Spirit.

With just 34 one-bedroom Balcony Suites on board, and an almost 1:1 staff-to-guest ratio, this brand new ship is the only one of its kind on the Mekong. In true Scenic fashion, the Spirit invites guests to take advantage of more inclusions and more space than its out-dated rivals, only with a lot less guests.

There are just 34 Deluxe Suites on board. Each one stands at a roomy 32m2 and features, as all suites do, a flat screen TV with complimentary on-demand videos, walk-in wardrobe, cosy ‘Scenic Slumber Bed’, exquisite spa products, free WiFi and an all-weather Scenic ‘Sun Lounge’ balcony, which lets you enjoy panoramic views of the river at any time of day.

If you’re looking to treat yourself, a stay on the ship’s Diamond Deck is a must. Here you’ll find 8 40m2 Grand Deluxe Suites and just 2 striking Royal Panorama Suites, each one boasting an incredible 80m2 worth of space and a private outdoor terrace with your own Jacuzzi.

Stroll further down the 85 metre-long ship and you’ll find a resort-style pool and bar, gym, wellness centre, beauty salon, steam sauna and an open-air cinema. Dining is an eclectic affair, varying from a handcrafted a la carte menu in the Crystal Restaurant

to a theatrical Teppanyaki Bar and freshly prepared barbecue from a live wok cooking station. If you’re in search of something a little more casual, the laidback River Café opens early for breakfast and serves Asian-inspired fare throughout the day.

The introduction of this revolutionary vessel is accompanied by five new itineraries on the Mekong. Ranging from 14 to 29 days, these eye-opening adventures combine Scenic’s signature all-inclusive river cruising with 5-star luxury touring.

When you’re not making your way down the river, you can look forward to a diverse range of daily excursions, and there’s no ‘optional’ extras you have to pay for, just a flexible collection of activities, sightseeing opportunities and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Sample the aromatic street food of Ho Chi Minh City, visit the exotic Tra Su Bird Sanctuary in Chau Doc and watch the enigmatic sunrise over the World Heritage-listed Angkor Wat – these are just some of the highlights included as part of your flexible itinerary, all you have to do is pick the Freechoice options that suit your taste.

Thanks to Scenic’s enhanced Enrich programme, unforgettable experiences are never far away. High tea at the world-renowned Raffles Le Royal hotel before a private shadow puppet performance and a

traditional monk’s blessing at Wat Nokor are just a few honourable mentions.

When you reach the land touring stretch of your journey, you’ll stay in stylishly appointed retreats, like Park Hyatt in Siem Reap or the Caravelle Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. A range of longer tours also feature a two night cruise through Halong Bay on the Au Co, not to mentioned extended visits to Laos and Bangkok.

With such a rare level of inclusions for such a small number of guests, only a select few will get to experience the rare level of luxury that makes Scenic’s Mekong cruises such an astounding success. If you want to be one of the luxury few, call Scenic today on 0808 102 2785 or order your free South East Asia brochure to find out more.
