The year has flown by and with a busy term ahead of us, the next thing you know we’ll be at the end of the year with a well-deserved long summer break. In staffing matters, I would like to con- gratulate Tilly Ranieri. After a rigorous selection process, she was selected to be the new assistant principal of the School. Tilly has been a highly valued member of the Woniora Road School team for several years, has initiated many innovative programs, and is al- ways creatively looking to improve our school and the programs we offer our students. In other good news, we are thrilled to welcome back Roxanne Lynch after extended medical leave. It’s great to have Rox’s friendly smile back with Vicky in the junior room. There were a number of significant achievements and events last term. Our students worked tremendously hard to complete the HSC trials and coursework, as well as preliminary HSC courses. We saw a number of students extend beyond their comfort zone in putting themselves forward for early entry into Wollongong University. Our senior students completed their RSA and RCG certifications and we had an- other Year 12 student flourish in the OzHarvest program. The outgoing SRC hosted the first ever inter-school 3-on- 3 tournament with Centennial Park and Rivendell Schools. Not only was the tournament a success (with Woniora tak- ing home the overall title!) but some of the bands forged in the music sessions with Jack closed out the day with some excellent performances of the Arctic Monkeys and MGMT. We also have a new SRC after elections held last term. You can read about our next round of student leaders later in this newsletter. HSC exams began at the start of this term, and we have a number of students ready to take on the challenge and complete their schooling. They each have overcome many challenges to reach this point and as a school we are exceptionally proud. This pride extends beyond their academic achievement to the confident and compassionate young adults we see before us heading into their final school exams and beyond. We also have some of our regular, fun end of year activities scheduled: our annual camp to Stanwell Tops is on in Week 6, and the senior graduation formal is set for Wednesday the 12th of December. Sydney Distance Ed- ucation High School will be hosting their own presentation days through- out the latter half of the term, and we will have our junior presentation in the final week of term. We also have a new minivan on a long-term rental, and will be taking it out on a number of excursions throughout the term. Finally, I would like to welcome all the new students and their parents/carers to the school community. We all look forward to working with you and hope you enjoy your time here with us. TAFE ‘Yes’ ProgramJemima, Poppy, Erin and I travelled with Kate and Stacie to Enmore TAFE where we participated in the TAFE ‘Yes’ Program for one day a week over five weeks. The program, Special Effects Makeup, taught us how to apply makeup and prosthetics to create characters that you might see in theatres, films, and television. We learned how to keep a clean workspace and apply the makeup safely, and several techniques used in the industry to create amazing characters.

By the second week, we had learned enough to choose characters and recreate them. Poppy chose a scary version of Jack Skellington, Jemima chose to be a Lady Satan, Caiden was a circus performer

and I was a Celtic warrior. We highly enjoyed using face paints to create the look that we envisioned. We learned to create face charts before creating a makeup look on our faces, and we learned about the importance of creating a safe and clean workspace to ensure that there were no health and safety risks.

The last week of the course was my favourite because we got to choose any sort of makeup we wanted to do and use everything we learned from previous weeks. Throughout the course, everyone’s creativity and imagination could be seen plainly on our faces.

Everyone who participated was very talented and we all had a lot of fun completing this course. Nora, our teacher, was very helpful and informative. She helped us put our ideas onto face charts and then use those charts to work on our own faces. She also taught us a lot about special effects makeup, and she always had a funny joke to say about chocolate.

Overall, participating in the TAFE ‘Yes’ program was worth it, and I had a lot of fun, and I am sure everyone else learned a lot and enjoyed doing it too.

3-on-3 Basketball with Musical Performance

At the beginning of term 3, it was decided that our school would host for the very first time the 3-on-3 basketball competition.

When the day arrived, we managed to make up a system that would work perfectly with our court size. Each school would have two separate teams, making six teams playing altogether. Each team played an equal amount of times and this allowed more peo-ple to get involved as each team only had roughly 4 players.

As the competition went on, everyone was supporting each other and encouraging, which created a positive

vibe within our school. Everyone had fun and played as best as they could, resulting in a great day. To end the tournament, we had a sausage sizzle as per usual which was well done by everyone who helped, and then the winners of the competition were announced.

It was a very close tournament, with one of the teams from Centennial Park winning the individual prize, but by points scored per school (both teams included) Woniora Road took out the win, go us!

Afterwards, we had a musical performance by the school band which has Lisa, Bree, Odin, Nathan, Jim-my and Jack. They played music for everyone involved in the day. They had obviously been practicing a lot because they all played well and it was a big audience but everyone seemed to enjoy the show.

The day ended on good terms, and everyone seemed to be happy with the different way of playing the 3-on-3 basketball competition. We could host the next one as well, so it’s good that our first one went so well and everyone knows how it will work for the next one.

More photos of the day are on the back page of the newsletter.
