CHAPTER TWO - TERTAINMEL ON BOARD

Personal Guests Guidance concerning entertainment of guests is found in the rules of the mess where a special section will cover entertainment of ladies,

It is usual to ask the Mess President for permission to bring guests into the Mess, even during the permitted hours, and on,--e permission has been given it is courteous to let other officers know, particularly when guests are asked to dinners Guests are always met at the gangway and introduced to other officers in the wardroom

In Naval Bases a civilian guest will require a pass obtainable from the Coxswain or Ship's Office,. If your guest has not got a pass, he or she must be met at the Dockyard Gate with a pass made out in the guests name. Serving Naval Officers do not require a dockyard pass, providing they can produce their ID card

Many Captains and Presidents of the mess like to be told if an officer has invited a senior serving officer onboard.

An officer is entirely responsible for his guests whilst he or she is onboard and of course a guests drinks are signed for by the host a guest is never allowed to buy drinks onboard.

In many shore establishments and some larger ships a 'guestroom is available for entertainment. It should he booked through the appropriate person, usually the Mess Secretary or Mess Manager,

Guests of Other Officers These are treated as if they were your own, If the host officer is unexpectedly called away, other officers present make sure the guest continues to be well entertained, the hostscwn mess number can be used.

Mess Guests A Mess Guest is a temporary visitor who is usually onboard in some service capacity, but the mess rules will often define those to he regarded as Mess Guests, All officers help to look after the guest and the total cost of any meals or drinks is shared by all officers, 'Mess Guest' and your own signature being required on bar chits.

Entertaining Other Wardrooms When a wardroom wishes to entertain officers of another wardroom the signal RPC (Request the pleasure of your company) is made. The signalled answer is either WMP (With Much Pleasure) or MRU (Much Regret Unable).

RPCs usually take place between 1.200 and 1300, all officers in the 'host ship' attend and the cost is shared amongst the host officers on a 'Stripe Basis's

As a guest at an RPC an officer takes his cue for departure from his own Mess President or senior guest. It is as well to remember that an afternoon's work ciiov;s an RPCO Thank the President and lea. e in time for your hosts to have lunch.

THE SIGNAL PPC IS MADE'

'GUESTS ARE NEVER LEFT UNATTENDED'

d

Cocktail Parties and Receptions HM Ships often give receptions at home and abroad, usually on the first day of a visit. Blank invitations are sent in advance to the Mayor, Naval Attache, or Consul of the port concerned, with a request that he invites a cross section of the local community and anyone who will be assisting with the visit.

Such parties are an idealway of saying Thank You' to the host port and in particular those who will be entertaining any of the ship company. In many cases the impression created at the party will colour the guests' views about the Royal Navy or the Country - it is essential that the party goes well.

Golden Rules are:

a) Be ready to receive your guests at least ten minutes before they are due to arrive

b) Circulate among the guests and make sure guests are never left unattended

C) Be particularly attentive to older guests. They are often those who have helped arrange the visit and may have offered entertainment to the Ship's Company - they may even have attractive daughters

d) Help senior officers out if you see they have been 'cornered' and are unable to circulate. Tactfully, they may have chosen to be cornered

e) Know what time the party ends and when the bar will be closed

As guests will often outnumber the hosts an officer should rarely be in the same group as another of the ship's officers.

Junior officers are often asked to help guide guests from the gangway to the party where guests are introduced to the Captain on arrival.

The cost of the party is shared on a 'Stripe Basis' but a small proportion of the total cost may be returned from public funds.

Mess Dinners Wardrooms dine together from time to time, either on special occasions or just for the pleasure of doing so. Special occasions might include Trafalgar Night, Taranto Night, dining in a new Captain or dining out officers about to leave the ship or establishment.

The dress to be worn will be announced well beforehand. In home waters mess dress with miniatures, a stiff shirt and white waistcoat) or mess undress (soft pique shirt with blue waistcoat) is normal. Hosts should always be in the anteroom to receive guests at least five minutes before they are due eg if the dinner is at 1930 for 2000, then hosts should be ready at 1925 as guests will arrive shortly afterwards for a drink before dinner which is served at 2000 or soon after).

Mess dinners follow a set procedure but slight variations occur depending on the availability of a band and whether or not foreign guests are present0

The CPO Steward reports to the President who takes the senior guest and precedes the officers into the wardroom as the band plays Roast Beef of. Old England'. Officers take their seats before the President or Chaplain, if present, says grace. At large dinners a seating plan will be on display in the anteroom and lace cards on the table.

The meal is then served in the usual order, sherry and wine are offered by a wine steward but may be refused. The President starts each course, other officers taking their cue from him.

'ROAST I

After the last course, just before dessert is served, the tables are cleared and grace is said. Port and Madeira are passed clockwise around the table (if you do not want to drink port or madeira indicate that you would like water in your glass). The President uses his gavel and says 'Mr Vice - The Queen'. The Vice President, at the other end of the table replies 'Gentlemen The Queen' and the loyal toast is drunk seated. Port is never sipped before the loyal toast.

The procedure is slightly different if foreign Heads of State are present or if foreign officers are present as guests. Officers are normally briefed on these occasions but QRRN lays down the correct procedure.

12-

4.

After the Loyal Toast dessert and coffee are served, the Bandmaster is invited to have a glass of port with the President and the port is passed again. The President may give permission for officers to smoke when cigars and cigar -ettes will be handed by the staff.

Sometimes speeches follow. These are usually quite short, officers should not comment during the speeches but applause is in 'order.

SPEECHES FOLLOW

Dinner is over when the port is removed but officers do not leave the table until the President has done so. Officers may not leave during the dinner - a good reason for having one or two glasses of sherry rather than three pints of beer beforehand. If an officer is called out for duty he asks the President to be excused.

In some messes the custom of drinking the appropriate daily toast is practised. These are drunk after the Loyal Toast and are

Monday Night Our Ships at Sea Tuesday Night - Our Men Wednesday Night Ourselves (a no one else is l±icelj to concern themselves

with our welfare) Thursday Night - A bloody war and a sickly season Friday Night A willing foe and sea room Saturday Night Sweethearts and Wives (when the youngest officer may

be asked to reply on their behalf) Sunday Night Absent Friends

On Trafalgar Night the toast to Lord Nelson is proposed by the President without reference to the Vice President, or by whoever may be making the speech. It is proposed thus 'Gentlemen, the immortal memory of Admiral Lord Nelson0 This is the only toast drunk in silence,

After dinner host officers remain in the anteroom until the last guest has left. Some messes play mess games after dinner. These are usually enjoyable but always remember that the spilling of beer or damage to furniture is not only very ill-mannered but also spoils the enjoyment of other officers.

Ladies Night Some wardrooms hold. a Ladies Night' from time to time when wives or girlfriends may be invited. The procedure is much the same as for normal mess dinners. A seating plan is often made and it is important to find out who will be your neighbours at table, remembering you have a special responsibility to escort the guest on your right into the dinner. Roulette or dancing sometimes takes place after dinner.

Entertainment of Ratings Ratings are never entertained as personal guests in the wardroom. On very special occasions the mess as a whole might entertain senior ratings. WRNS ratings in plain clothes may be entertained with the permission of the President of the Mess,,
