LA TECA INTO LE GALLERIE Trento 2012 Le Gallerie are an extraordinary space, two road tunnels nearly three hundred meters long, ten meters wide and six and a half meters high, transformed in 2007, at the same time the opening of the new route of the ring road to the town of Trento, in an exhibition space and workshop dedicated history. They were built in the early seventies to allow the crossing ring road, passing under the Doss Trento, but their construction had torn the old suburb of Piedicastello, ravaging the square, the relationship with the Gothic church of St. Apollinaris and the "sea" of Doss, on behalf of the need for progress in the transport that at that time seemed unstoppable. In more than thirty years eight million vehicles have whizzed within them and the almost deafening roar of the engines has punctuated the days and nights of the suburb. When traffic was cleverly diverted elsewhere, a new path of longer tunnels that pass through the suburb with virtually no warning of their presence, the wreck of the pure road has become surprisingly more. The "non-place" of space between the dip in the belly of the mountain and the "light at the end", completely devoid of symbolic elements except those directly related to traffic and safety has become a lived and attended, where the history of Trentino and its Community is told and represented by many different languages, arousing curiosity and encouraging knowledge. In mid August in 2012 we were given a task that is almost a challenge: design and build a conference room for 250 people exactly at the midpoint of the white gallery, to be inaugurated in mid-October of the same year, with a budget particularly content and a clear standard input, create a space for conferences and events also able to symbolically represent the Trentino. The room should be ready for the opening of the exhibition Past Sky, hosted at Le Gallerie to celebrate the Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme program in the winter of 2013. We design La Teca, the name of the new room, from the place, we always do it, it can never be otherwise, even inside a tunnel. The site, in its formal simplicity, is complex, the road draws a wide curve with a double slope, longitudinal and transverse. It is not possible to force the space, impose a rigid morphology, and even just simply a horizontal plane. It must satisfy the route, follow the dual course, always stay within the limits beyond which the roof of the tunnel. But it is so easy to make a building system can be assembled quickly: we will have less than twenty days to realize materially the whole building. From the most complex challenges it’s possible to exit only with simple solutions: the project focuses on a basic matrix, a vertebra, an infinitely replicable, can be the answer to the rules imposed by dimensional place. A quoin panels made of Cross-Lam wood from Val di Fiemme, two side walls and a floor, essentially a post and lintel, symbolically and historically the most elementary building, almost the archetype, the original building architecture. The particular inclination of the side walls and the floor, however, allows the mutual interpenetration of the elements, while ensuring a double characteristic: the possibility of rotation planimetric, necessary to accommodate the roadway during cornering, but also the ability to have a tolerance intrinsic, able to ensure speed of assembly and the possibility of compensation guaranteed between the elements. The longitudinal section evokes the jagged mountains, the pace of the valleys and peaks, the symbol orographic more evident and universally representative of Trentino. The wood is left deliberately visible, treated only with intumescent paint transparent and that requires us the law. It will be the image of spruce, the rate of knots, and the smell of wood to welcome visitors and to characterize the hall. Only the closure panels between the ashlars, arrears to the wire of the overlap innermost, and the septa of transversal closure in the header are painted in black; the floating floor is made of OSB panels tapped between them, a solution that guarantees us cheapness and speed of realization. The implants are coated externally, in the space between the extrados of wooden panels and the vault of the tunnel, concentrating the vents input for treating air on the panels blacks closing between the segments, on which are stretched long strip RGB LEDs, capable chromatically to vary the light in the room. The main light is provided by large LED lamps fixed to the wall, originally produced for street lighting and choices quite remember what the place has been for many years.

VALLE DEI LAGHI THEATRE

Vezzano - Trento

2002 | 2008 The structure lies in the village of Vezzano, in a area of high environmental quality with scarce urbanization. The project maintains the rural features of the area, limiting the anthropic and landscaping impact, giving the site a recreational park look, as a green area for free time provided with facilities for playing and practicing sports, but also for open-air events and indoor shows. The building, that represents the heart of the entire area, consists of a large main hall with 408 seats and a smaller hall, connected to the previous one and that consists in a integration for eventual supplemental services as exhibition spaces, buffet, stands and more. The structure is characterized by a reinforced concrete plinth, set north and covered on the south side with a wall hanging built in cages of galvanized steel filled with stone obtained from the excavations of the building. On the concrete plinth lies a large structure in laminated wood, built to give the architectonic space of the hall rhythm. The larch wood characterizes both the countertop inside the main hall and the outside coating of the vertical elements. The architectural language used is that of a non-showed modernity that refused the banality of folklore, tries to reinterpret the traditional horizontal buildings (pastures, factories, etc.) that characterize the mountain landscape of Trentino.

UNIVERSITY RESIDENCE MAYER Trento 2007 | 2008

LEED® NC PLATINO

undergoing certification

The project is about the building of the new university residence Mayer, in Trento, along corso Michelangelo Buonarroti, behind the train station. The building morphology, that features a courtyard open on the south side and closed on the other three sides, allows an optimal exposure, both in terms of climate and acoustic. At ground level we find the main common areas, while at the upper levels we find the spaces meant for the residence of the students. The building is made with an above ground structure in laminated panels in fir wood, built in crossed layers (x-lam) insulated in mineral wool and covered on the outside with a ventilated façade in wired-reinforced cement.

CIVIL DEFENCE CENTRE OF FAI DELLA PAGANELLA Fai della Paganella - Trento 2008 | 2012

ENERGY-EFFICIENT BUILDING DPGP 809/2009 ENERGY CLASS B+

APE PRICE 2011

PROJECT REPORTED FOR TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION

The colmplex hosts the Protezione Civile centre of Fai della Paganella and it develops morphologically along a main axis (East-West), characterized by three distinct volumes and easily detectable, that host services intended for coordination and rescue operations. The largest structure hosts the Firefighter station, that overlooks the large square intended for drills while the smallest body, that overlooks the helipad, is home to the Alpine Rescue. The municipal warehouse is located underneath the upper square and it can be reached through an independent vehicular entrance. From an architectural point of view the building is build on a massive reinforced concrete plinth, that defines the connection to the ground. On it lies the volumes made of wood, strongly defined by the trend of the roofs and aimed at reinterpret with the eyes of contemporary architecture, the building tradition of Trentino mountain landscape.

MECHATRONICS CENTER

Rovereto - Trento 2011-2014

This project is about the construction of a business incubator, meant specifically for the mechatronic sector, taking advantage from the lot available placing on various levels the production spaces and the tertiary. To satisfy this need the building features a new level placed at -6.40m, underneath the natural level, reachable through two large vehicular ramps. Planimetrically the project uses a L-shaped morphology that takes advantage of the planimetry of the used lot, dividing in two large blocks connected by pedestrian footbridges placed at different altimeric levels. The lowest level (-6.40m) and at the land surface are used for production spaces, characterized by entrance routes divided between vehicular and pedestrian. At the first floor (+5.30m) we find spaced meant for tertiary activities and organized in five independent buildings, that can be reached through the green covering, thought as a large public space. As for architectural choices the project allows the full expression of the activities that take place within it, both from a constructive technologies point of view and in the choice of the finishing materials. The spaces intended for production are made with a heavy concrete prefabricates while for the spaces intended for the tertiary activities it’s used a lighter prefabricate in wood, a material that represents a true excellence in Trentino. Wooden technology is characterized by the use of panels with cross-lam fibers for the perimeter walls and the covering floor, while the internal structure of the building uses a series of laminated wood pillars. The surface finish of the offices is made with high density wooden stratified panels, built with craft papers treated with thermosetting resins and an external covering with a high resistance against weather agents.

RENOVATION AND EXTENSION OF THE LICEO MAFFEI

Riva del Garda - Trento 2012-2013

This project is about the renovation of the historical building born as a hospital in 1893 that holds important historical and symbolic value. It’s expected the demolition of the extensions done in the second half of the 1900s: the gym and the classrooms of the ‘90s. The main architectural theme is the relation between the historical building and the contemporary extensions, and interests the entire project both from an architectural point of view and a technological and constructive one. In this way the project suggests to maintain untouched the architectonic features of the historical building, adding to it an openly contemporary architecture, characterized by wide windows portions and a minimalist and strict language. By this logic the extension above ground is made entirely with dry technology, through a prefabricated system that mixes wood, steel and reinforced concrete. Very important are green spaces, what holds great symbolic and representative value.
