I hope everyone had a happy and safe Fourth of July! I didn’t hear quite as many fireworks in the neighborhood this year for some reason but I think that’s probably a good thing. I understand the City of Round Rock put out signs prohibiting fireworks so thanks to all who took that seriously!

As I write this is mid-July we have received better than three inches of much needed rain in three days time. Seems remarkable for July in Texas but I’ll take it! This blessed rain event appears to be very well timed and will help us get through most of the rest of the summer in terms of maintaining healthy landscaping and reducing fire danger in the Greenbelt. Always thankful for summer rains!

I’d like to say that it’s been a quiet summer but the reality is that it hasn’t. We’ve seen more complaints in the last thirty days than I think I’ve seen all year. They run the gamut from parking issues to barking dogs to lack of landscape maintenance, noise, etc. This list seems to go on and on.

And for the most part these complaints are legitimate. We have some people who simply don’t understand what it means to live in a deed restricted neighborhood. They want the aesthetics, the safety, the higher resale values, and the amenities like the pool and greenbelt but somehow don’t think they need to contribute individually.

All we can do is have the Board enforce the CC&R, set an example for others by maintaining our property, and encourage compliance where possible. It takes all of us to make this work!

Updates from the June Board meeting include:Wizzie Brown has communicated that the “Rasberry Crazy

Ants” appear to be spreading throughout the neighborhood but there are only a couple of homes where the numbers are

unusually high. Residents need to know that these ants can be lured by simply placing slices of hot dog around the property and then monitoring for a couple of days. Once the ants are spotted it should be easier to find where they are nesting and treat them with contact insecticide.

Jennifer English, Wood Glen’s new Property Manager with CMA, addressed the Board and gave an update on the Association’s transition process. Most items have been completed or are in the process of completion and the initial survey and first inspection have occurred. The Board discussed several items related to the inspection process and recent violations. Action items were assigned as necessary. Overall, the transition is tracking to plan and most, if not all, deliverables should be completed by the end of June.

The Amenity Center security project is nearing completion. The Video surveillance system is complete and the proximity card system has been installed as well. Resident database work is also complete and uploaded to the system. CMA will mail out the proximity cards to residents in July and final changes to the gate lock will occur in mid-August.

Residents need to know that they should keep their keys because they will still operate the gate lock on the tennis courts. The new proximity cards will only work on the gate at the Amenity Center for this phase of the project. If residents have not received their card in the mail by the first week in August they should contact CMA to inquire. Those residents who are leasing should contact the property owner (landlord) for their card. Cards will only be sent to property owners and not tenants, however, tenants who receive a letter sent to their address from CMA should be careful to not discard it and

Serving Central Texas Since 1979

Jeffrey L. Tucker, P.E., a registered professional engineer in Texas, has been involved in structural design, inspection and repair of houses and apart-ments since 1965. He is uniquely qualified to perform structural analyses of wood frame structures and slab foundations; to inspect and offer assurance of structural integrity and/or repair recommendations and details.

make sure it gets to the owner.August 17th is the current target date for changing out the entry

gate lock. At that point only proximity cards will allow entry to the pool area. Existing keys will no longer work at that location. More information will be disseminated by eblast as we get closer to the target date.

Karen Fischer reported on greenbelt maintenance activities. Dead tree removal should be complete by the end of June with other maintenance activities completed in July.

Residents of “The Park” should know that I had several complaints about the grass being cut too short. I went to seven different yards and measured the grass and you all were right; the grass averaged about two and a half inches instead of the four inches that is recommended for St. Augustine grass.

We have instructed SunTerra to adjust their mowers to obtain the required four inches and maintain it that way going forward. We appreciate folks letting us know about that situation.

Finally, we are in need of volunteers to serve on the Board. Both are Section Representative seats for Section 3 and Section 4. If you live in either of those sections please contact me or anyone else from the Board to let us know you’re interested. The Section Map is located on the www.woodglen.org website under

“Resident Resources” so those interested can figure out exactly which section they live in to determine eligibility.

These seats typically require an interest in maintaining high neighborhood standards, a willingness to get involved and maybe 6-8 hours/month of your time at the most. We encourage residents who may have an interest to contact us and we’ll walk you through the process so you know what to expect. I promise we don’t bite!

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Julie Cowan, Section 3 Representative, for her time serving on the Board for the past few years. Julie let us know that July will be her last month on the Board. She managed the Amenity Center in addition to her normal Board role and did a great job. We thank her for her service and her work towards making Wood Glen a better place to live. She will be missed!

That’s a wrap for this month neighbors. We wish you a happy rest of the summer and let’s hope that August doesn’t get as hot as last year and that we get some more rain. I know, I’m not asking for much am I!

One last note: A big thanks goes out to residents who have been using the pool this summer. Everyone has kept the area clean and well maintained. No major damage to furniture or complaints so far this year. Everyone has really stepped up and kept a watch on the area. It helps the Association a lot when people do this.

Thanks,Eric

OAK WILTAs you most likely know, oak wilt is a fungus that kills oak

trees. Infections have been found in 16 oak species, but no species of oak is known to be immune. The main period of infection is in the spring.

Symptoms can be seen in red oak as early as May. Leaves turn dull green or bronze, appear water soaked and wilt. They then turn yellow or brown. Damage begins at the tips and outer edges. There is a very distinct line formed between the green and brown/ bronze. Symptoms appear throughout the crown and leaves are shed from the ends of branches. Crowns of trees with oak wilt seldom have uniform brown coloring as do trees with other issues. The disease progresses rapidly with red oaks dying within 1 year of disease onset but with some dying 1-2 months after symptoms appear.

For white oak, symptoms may be the same as for red oak and the tree may die in one year, but often white oaks die slowly. In trees that are dying more slowly, symptoms may only appear in and kill 1-2 branches per year. If the fungus is allowed to persist, then the tree will slowly decline each year leading to its eventual death. Some white oaks seem to recover from the disease, but still harbor the pathogen and may spread it to nearby oaks.

There is no known way to save a tree that is infected with oak wilt. The best thing to do is prevention techniques.

Detect symptoms early and remove infected trees.Breaking root grafts between diseased and healthy trees. You

may use mechanical or chemical barriers.Do not prune trees in the spring and summer. Fresh pruning

wounds can attract beetles that carry the fungus. If you do need to prune, paint over all tree wounds

immediately. For pictures and in depth information on oak wilt, please

Back To School Checklist

As a parent, there’s no doubt that back-to-school season requires a lot of effort to get your kids all set for the challenges of the classroom. But it’s also an important time to consider your child’s health, says Daniel Howard, M.D., a pediatrician with The Austin Diagnostic Clinic (ADC).

“From making sure all of the proper vaccinations have been administered on schedule, to getting their kids back on ‘school year’ sleep schedules, health is obviously a huge consideration for parents with school-age children,” Dr. Howard says.• Vaccinations 101. Children should receive a variety of vaccinations and

booster shots to prevent them from getting many serious and highly contagious diseases.

• Hearing and vision tests. Consider getting your child’s hearing and vision tested before they begin school to prevent learning challenges in the classroom.

• Health information. Parents should be prepared to provide schools with a list of emergency contact information that includes telephone numbers for parents, close family, pediatrician, and dentist.

• Diet and sleep. Healthy eating is a critical part of a child’s physical and mental development and can help curb the risk of childhood obesity. Sleep is also essential—kids should get between eight to 11 hours per day, depending on their age.

Daniel Howard, M.D., is a pediatrician for The Austin Diagnostic Clinic, a multi-specialty clinic with physicians representing 21medical specialties at more than six

locations throughout Austin and Central Texas. Dr. Howard sees patients at the ADC Cedar Bend, at 2400 Cedar Bend Drive. For more information, visit www.adclinic.com or call 512-901-4016. To download an electronic version of this release, please

Gratitude is an instant mood converter. Gratefulness is the knife that melds impatience to patience, fear to love and anxiety to peace. Enveloped by the clouds of thankfulness, we can soar high in the air of optimism. Our aura is immediately cleansed when we fill our thoughts with praise. Relationships glow under the varnish of a positive expression in mutual affection.

We only have to look around us to realize how blessed we are. Being mindful of the generosity of people, beauty in our surroundings and the uniqueness of our own spirits can help us appreciate our fortunate existence.

Opening ourselves to receiving divine grace that is already a part of our lives makes us acknowledge our own sacredness. We appreciate our oneness with the universe and what we feel as a result, is gratitude on being a part of the whole. We feel love, we feel complete.

Modeling gratefulness with our families can help children open their hearts to the love and light in everything they do. Daily writing in their Gratitude Journal can gradually shift children's consciousness to a higher dimension.

Constantly reminding children to see the lessons presented by events instead of sulking on challenges can be an exercise in life-long learning. When we encourage children to make choices, evaluate them and re-choose options that help them feel grateful, we show them how to be free.

Together, we find that our interactions with each other have always been complete; the missing link in the puzzle in seeking out and seeding in the Om of smile- the symbol of thankfulness.

Gratitude is the key UNLOCKING THE DOORS TO TREASURES IN OUR CHILDREN

CARES!We Care Calendar for Wood Glen.  What

is it:     The Care Calendar is an online calendar.  If you have a special need (for example, you have a new baby and few meals would be very helpful) you would contact me either by phone (671-8467) or my email [email protected].

I would then set up the calendar with your needs (meals) and the times/dates that the meals would be needed.  Families in our neighborhood would be made aware of your need.  Families who are able to help would then  go online,  pull up the calendar and fill in the date and the meal they would be providing.

Or you could call me with the information and I would be happy to fill in the calendar with the information.  Very easy!  If you have any questions please call me.
