3Cut the core sides (C) to thesize given on the Materials

List. Glue and clamp the coretogether in the configurationshown on Drawing 2. Makesure the ends are flush. Drillpilot and countersunk shank

holes where shown, and drive inthe screws. Remove the clamps.

4To position the corebetween the top (A) and bot-

tom (B), cut two 5fi13fi"spacers. Make the spacers frompoplar. [You can rip them laterto 5" wide for the brackets (G).]Clamp the core between the topand bottom, positioning it asshown in Photo A. Using thecountersunk shank holes in thetop and bottom as guides, drill

pilot holes into the ends of thecore, and drive in the screws.

    Add rotating panels

    1From " tempered hard-board, cut the six panels (D)

    to the size listed.

2Cut the panel cleats (E) tothe size listed. Mark, band-

saw, and sand the fi" radii ontheir ends, where shown onDrawing 2. For the six upper

    cleats, drill7

" holes, centeredon the length and the fi" thick-ness, where shown. For the sixlower cleats, drill centered "holes " deep. Cut six " dow-els " long and glue them in theholes in the lower cleats.

3Glue and clamp the cleats(E) to the panels (D), where

    shown. Set the panels aside.

    Make the wallbracket

    1Laminate two 522fi"boards for the back (F).

With the glue dry, joint oneedge and rip and crosscut it tosize. Install a " dado blade inyour tablesaw, and form thenotches for the brackets (G),where dimensioned onDrawing 3, as shown inPhoto B.

With the indexing marks on the top (A) and bottom (B) facing upward, use spacers to position the core parallel to two sides. Measure infrom the points, centering the core.

    Retrieve the boards used

earlier for spacers, and cutthe brackets (G) to the size list-ed. Mark the angled cuts, wheredimensioned on Drawing 3.Bandsaw and sand to the lines.

3Cut the lower arm (H) andupper arm (I) to size. Using

a Forstner bit, drill the 1" holefi" deep in the lower arm, andthe 1" hole in the upper arm,

    where shown on Drawing 3.

The holes are centered on thewidths of parts H and I.

4Glue and clamp the brackets(G) to the back (F). Drill

pilot and countersunk shankholes, and drive in the screws.Remove the clamps. In similarfashion, glue, clamp, and screwin place the lower arm (H) andupper arm (I).

    Finish and mountthe carousel

1Sand all the parts to 220 grit, easing theedges with a sanding block. Apply the

finish of your choice. We brushed on twocoats of satin polyurethane, sanding lightlywith 220-grit sandpaper between coats. You also can prime and paint to match

    existing cabinetry.

2Cut two 33" hardboard blanksfor the washers (J). Mark their centers,

and draw 3"-diameter circles. Drill cen-tered 1" holes, and bandsaw the washersto shape.

3Cut the cover plate (K) to size. Drillcountersunk shank holes at the four cor-

ners, where shown on Drawing 3.

4With the finish dry, drill " holesthrough the wall-bracket back (F).

Transfer these locations to the wall at a studlocation. Drill pilot holes into the stud.

Now fasten the wall bracketwith " lag screws 3fi" long.

    5Cut a 17"-long piece of 1"dowel. Place the carousel

between the upper and lowerarms. Slide the washers (J) inplace between the carousel andthe arms. Drop the dowel infrom the top, seating it in thehole in the lower arm (H).Center the cover plate (K) overthe upper arms dowel hole.

Using the shank holes in thecover plate as guides, drill pilotholes, and drive in the screws.

6Arrange your tools on thepanels and make the hold-

ers. For the mounting methodswe used, seepage 8.

7With the holders nowattached to the panels, slip

washers over the bottom cleats" dowels, and tip the panelsinto place, seating the bottomcleat dowels in the holes in the

carousels bottom (B). Slide a#8 flat washer between the topcleat and the carousel top (A),where shown on Drawing 2.Secure the panels to the top (A)with flat washers and round-head screws. Attach the toolsand bits.

    Adding your tools and bits

How many of the hundred-plus small items that clog thedrawers in your shop can you fit onto your carousel?

To plan the arrangement of your tools and bits, place thepanels (D/E) on your workbench, and position the items, asshown in Photo C. You can store items on both sides ofeach panel, and also on the core.

Note: For the panels to rotate, there must be clearancebetween each panel and the core. No bit, tool, or tool hold-er may protrude beyond an imaginary 8"-diameter cylin-der, centered on the panel. Items stored on the core mustnot interfere with the panels rotation.

For tools that can hang from a peg or pegs, mark the loca-tions, and drill holes through the panels. Insert machinescrews, and thread on nuts, as shown on Drawing 4.

For drill bits and other tools that fit in round holes, mea-sure the bit or tool center-to-center distances, and transferthese dimensions to blocks of wood. Drill holes slightlylarger than the bit-shank or tool diameters. Clamp the hold-ers to the panels. Drill pilot and countersunk shank holes

from the opposite side, and drive in screws, where shown.(We didnt glue the holders in place, just in case we everneed to rearrange our layout.)

If some of your tools have their own small case or hold-er, you may wish to mount it to a panel. To permanentlyattach the case, drill holes through it and the panel, and fas-

ten with machine screwsand nuts. For removableattachment, adhere Velcrotape to the case and panel.Other easy mounting meth-ods are to use spring clips,

as shown in Photo D, andmagnetic toolholders, asshown in Photo E.

Arrange the bits or tools you wish to storein the carousel on the panels. Leaveenough clearance between items to allowfor easy handling.

After fastening spring-clip tool holders tothe panel with machine screws and nuts, snap the tools in place.

To avoid having to make intricate holdersfor small or odd-shaped parts, mount amagnetic tool holder with a machine screwand nut.
