By Julie Rae Rickard
It is a scenario familiarto many of us. You see ababy bird or rabbit thatappears to be too young orhas possibility been in-jured. What do you do?The answers can be
found at centrewildlife-care.org.Centre Wildlife Care in
Port Matilda was foundedby Robyn Graboski who isalso the director of thenon-profit and licensedorganization. She “is a trained and
Licensed Wildlife Rehabil-itator andhas beenrehabili-tatingwildlifesince1988.Robyn islicensedby thePennsyl-vaniaGame Commission, theFederal Fish and WildlifeService, the Fish and BoatCommission and the
USDA,” according to thewebsite.“CWC is an all volun-
teer organization, fundedonly by donations and re-ceives no funding fromlocal, state or federalagencies.”They care for sick, in-
jured, displaced or or-phaned animals with theplan of returning themback into the wild. You can call CWC for
advice, but because theyare a volunteer basedgroup, they do not havemeans to pick up and
transportthe crea-tures.Here
are somebasic tipsfor how tohandle aninjured an-imal fromtheir web-site.
1. If it is a dangerous ani-mal or if you can notcatch it, call for assis-tance, either from
CWC at 814-692-0004 orthe PennsylvaniaGame Commission. (InCentre, Clearfield,Clinton, and Elk Coun-ties-570-398-4744. InBedford, Blair, orHuntingdon Counties-814-643-1831. Other re-gional offices are listedon www.pgc.pa.gov.)
2. If a wild animal is notfrightened of you andyou can capture it eas-ily, it is probably in se-rious condition.
3. Do not handle it withyour bare hands andcontain it if possible ina covered box with ei-ther paper towels or asoft cloth for beddingand place it in a warm, quiet place.
4. Do not give it any foodor water and do notkeep it overnight orany longer than neces-sary.
5. If you can, transport itto CWC or to the Ani-mal Medical Hospitalin State College. If this
is not possible, theysuggest calling Wildlifein Need (WIN) at 877-239-2097. This group as-sists people state wide. You can not get in trou-
ble for helping a wild ani-mal if you are taking it toa licensed location. How-ever, there are lawsagainst owning wild orexotic animals without alicense. There is information
specific to various birdsand mammals on CWC’swebsite. For instance, didyou know feathered babybirds can appear injuredwhen they are actuallyonly learning to fly? These are called fledg-lings.“If they look bright
and alert, it is best toleave them alone,” it sayson the website. Normallythe parents are nearbywatching them and “con-tinue to care for themeven though they are onthe ground.”Touching a wild animal
(with gloves!) or espe-
cially a baby bird, will notcause the mother to aban-don or reject them.Other things to keep in
mind: baby rabbits areusually alone in their nestwith their mother onlyvisiting to feed them atnight and if you find ababy squirrel or chip-munk on the ground, it
may have fallen from atree and probably re-quires your help.In addition to their
website, CWC has a Face-book page with informa-tion and photos of thecreatures they are help-ing, as well as those theyhave rehabilitated and setfree.
Tips for helping injured animals
This great horned owl suffered head trauma and aneye injury after it was hit by a car. He was able to bereleased in May after he recovered at Centre WildlifeCare in Port Matilda. The non-profit volunteer groupprovides care and rehabilitation to over 1,500 mam-mals, birds and reptiles each year. (Photo courtesy ofCWC)“If they look
bright and alert,it is best to leavethem alone”

2019 VEHICLES TO WATCHEQ PUREThe smart EQ fortwo pure coupe is a model of efficiency and a joy to drive. Ithas a three-phase synchronous electric motor.EQ PASSIONThe electric EQ passion features thesame unique body style of the pure, but with additional touches inside and outEQ PRIMEStylish and chic, the electric EQ prime features unique amenities like the smart Lighting Package and black leatherseats.
EQ PASSION
STATUS IN MINIATURE
AT A GLANCETECHNOLOGY: Smarts are small enough to nose into parallel spots and have an innovative shape tomaximize efficiency.HISTORY: Started by the Swiss watch manufacturer, Swatch, with Daimler-Benz in 1994. Smart officially came to American markets in 2008.FAMOUS MODELS: Pure coupe, Passion, Passion Cabriolet.KNOWN FOR: Subcompact futuristic“concept” design, high miles per gallon
Smart (an acronym for SwatchMercedes ART) is a European import that has spread all over the world.Founded by Swatch CEO Nicolas Hayekin partnership with Daimler-Benz, smart filled an existing need in markets likeEurope and Hong Kong for subcompactvehicles. When gas prices in the UnitedStates rose and global warming becamea major political issue, American demandfor fuel-efficient cars skyrocketed.
The time was ripe to offer the futuristic
smart subcompact to the American market.
A new smart fortwo electric drive wasrecently released, letting buyers scoot around town under battery power. In fact, smart has completely switched to an electric-car strategy with its two models, the electric drive coupe and electric drive cabrio. It also looks to new ways of providing transportation in the future through concept cars like the Vision EQ, which aims to improve public
transit. With hybrid vehicles on the rise in
American markets, the smart has held its own as a “green” status symbol. Each model is instantly recognizable, and the futuristic design implies unusual levels of efficiency. In fact, many hybrid models are less effi cient, but at a much higher price, giving smart the advantage among younger consumers.
While it’s a relatively new brand, the smart combination of standout
styling, efficient powertrains and great timing mean a bright future.

Since being founded in 1937, Toyota has stood apart from the crowd withits attention to detail and the qualityof its craftsmanship. This Japaneseauto maker became a genuine brand tobe reckoned with in the United Statesover the ensuing decades. Its infl uenceextends beyond the borders of theU.S., though. Toyota was recently the top vehicle manufacturing company byvolume.
Initially, Toyota exclusively designed and produced compact cars. In fact, compact vehicles were Toyota’s bread and butter for some time. During the1990s, demand increased for larger, roomier cars and Toyota responded in kind. At the top of the list in terms ofpopularity were Toyota’s SUV offerings, including the RAV4 and the 4Runner.
As concerns about gas prices startedto loom large in the 2000s, Toyota was once again on the cusp of emerging
trends and innovations. The launch of its hybrid vehicle, the Prius, in 1997proved once more that Toyota was keeping its finger firmly on the pulse ofpublic opinion. The popularity of several of its smaller, more fuel-effi cient cars— including the Corolla and the Yaris — also confirmed that the company was onthe right track.
Going forward, Toyota continues to demonstrate a dedication to innovation in terms of a reduced reliance on oil.Hybrids, plug-in hybrids and plug-incars are all part of its current lineup.
AT A GLANCETECHNOLOGY: As the firstmajor automotive manufacturerto mass produce hybrid vehicles,Toyota is well known for its electric technology.HISTORY: Toyota’s fi rstprototype, the A1, was unveiledin 1935. A decade later, the company had sold more than100,000 cars.FAMOUS MODELS: Camry, Corolla, 4Runner, Land Cruiser.KNOWN FOR: Durability andreliability that aren’t matched byother brands
2019 VEHICLES TO WATCHRAV4Engineers worked for about four years to fi ne-tune every aspect of the new RAV4’s performance, handling stability and comfort.

There are dozens of small questions throughout the home buying and selling process and even when you’re already settled into your home. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau remains a good resource, and you can still reach out to your lender and real estate agent with questions.
Do I need a home warranty?Home warranties cover any number
of issues within the house, including plumbing, fixtures like the airconditioner or heater, and more. You can buy these for a year or two years or even longer. You typically would pay a set fee for each repair that needs to be made. According to ConsumerReports, this can be a good deal, butbefore you purchase one, consider what the warranty will and won’t cover and the likelihood of needing it. If you’re building a new home, the itemsinside are likely still covered by the manufacturer’s and builder’s warranties.
You can also include a home warranty in your offer.
What is the difference betweeninterest rate and APR?
Your lender will quote you two numbers when you secure your loan.According to the Consumer FinancialProtection Bureau, the interest rate isthe cost you pay annually to borrow the money. The annual percentage rate, or APR, accounts for points,
mortgage broker fees and other fees you are charged for the loan. Points letthe borrower make a tradeoff between upfront costs and monthly payments. You may pay more upfront but receive a lower interest rate.
When should I consider refi nancing?Refinancing allows you to get a
lower interest rate on your loan so you can pay less in interest and pay it off more quickly. According to Bankrate, it can be benefi cial if interest rates have dropped since you took out your loan or if you want to replace an adjustable-rate mortgage with a fixed rate loan or to eliminate the need for mortgageinsurance. However, there are closing costs with a refi nance, so to determine if it makes sense for you, determine the break-even point: total closing costs divided by monthly savings. If it will take you longer to break even than you plan to stay in the house, it may not be a good move. Talk to your lender if you’re interested.

It is with heavy hearts that we bid a fi nal farewell to our beloved fun and loving Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Kathy Hile, who was affectionately known as “Gram”. She was a kind, compassionate, spunky, honest, hilarious and strong
woman, and we loved her dearly for all that she was. We can envision her now, on that beach in Heaven, sitting in a comfy chair (with good back support), toes in the ocean (that’s just the right temp for her), drinking a delicious warm coffee (that’s not too hot and not too cold), hanging with her Virginia Slim. Waiting for her at that beach is her loving husband Craig, who has been waiting for her arrival along with Midnight, Gracie and Shelby, and a scattering of felines. Behind them is a full buffet spread of ALL of her favorite foods, as she loved going out for lunch. On a big screen TV will be playing nonstop Steelers and Pirates games, as she was a huge fan of both. Kathryn is survived by three daughters; Melissa M. Myers family enjoys legacy of hard work, showmanshipBY AMY BARKMAN
For the Mirror
BEDFORD— In the heartof southern BedfordCounty, a tradition ofteaching kids the value ofhard work and determina-tion lives on at the MyersView Farm.Sons Trey, 13, and Lane,
10, wake up every morningand head to the barn withtheir father, Scott Myers,to take care of the herd, butthis particular herd isn’t atypical array of livestock.Instead, it’s a barn full of
4-H and FFA project showanimals.Trey and Lane both say
they love living the life ofshowmen and actively par-ticipate in all aspects of theprocess — from being thereto purchase the animals, which include sheep, goatsand steers, to halter break-ing them, providing themthe right feeds to keep theirgrowth on track and keep-ing themclean andshow ready, right upthroughwalkingthem into theshow ring. While the
boys chattedabout thevarious as-pects ofshowman-ship thatthey enjoymost, Treysaid that his most proudmoment was being in thefinal drive at the Pennsyl-vania Farm Show with oneof his favorite show lambs.
Lane said he most en-joyed winning county-bredchampion during the 2018show season. The boys areactive members of theYoung Shepherds andStockmen 4-H Club. Bothattend school in the Bed-ford County School Dis-trict, where they are alsoactive in sports. Both Scott and his wife,
Leslie, grew up showinganimals. While Scott was a show-
man in Bedford County,Leslie grew up showingsteers in 4-H and FFA inRhode Island. She nowworks in medical devicesales but plays an activerole in the family’s show-manship lifestyle.“It’s the way we want
them to grow up becauseagriculture is becoming sofar removed from our cul-ture that people don’t un-derstand its importanceanymore,” she said. “We
want ourkids to appre-ciate it — thework ethic, the life les-sons, bothhard andgood, theheartache. It’s all life.”Leslie, an
animal anddairy sciencegraduate ofDelawareValley Col-lege (now
Delaware Valley Univer-sity), said she met Scottthrough a mutual friend,Rodney Fisher. They actually met for the
first time at the Bedford
County Fair, where theirkids now show animalsevery year. The son of Bill and Ada
Myers, Scott showed lambsfrom the age of 8 throughthe age of 21. He alsoshowed pigs for a couple ofyears and a steer one year.He won multiple awardsthroughout his showmanyears, including championmarket lamb and championmarket hog.He says his siblings also
showed animals, and heloves that his kids, alongwith his nieces andnephews, continue the tra-dition.Scott teaches agriscience
and biotechnology at theBedford County TechnicalCenter.“Mr. Myers is one of the
very best instructors Iknow,” Mark Bollman, ad-ministrative director, said.“He devotes countlesshours on behalf of his stu-dents. They not only attend, but do very well at a multi-tude of competitions that hetakes them to. I can’t sayenough good things aboutMr. Myers. He is the con-summate educator.”Bollman is excited about
the value this programadds to BCTC and to Bed-ford County.“Agriscience and
biotechnology offer optionsfor those students inter-ested in careers related tothe agriculture industry. This is well suited to ourrural setting. In addition, biotechnology offers amore technical/academicfield of study for studentsinterested in the life sci-ences,” Bollman said.
“Students in this pro-gram seek a wide variety ofoccupations or fields ofstudy. Some recent gradu-ates went straight into theworkforce as they were of-fered jobs by agriculturalrelated companies. Lam-pire Biological and thelarge-scale pork farms aretwo examples. Some goback to the family farm, and others go on to collegeor tech schools for an edu-cation in various agricul-tural related fields, including forestry, ag sales, veterinary medicine or ani-mal breeding.”Scott attended Penn State
University and then taughtfor several years in otherparts of Pennsylvania. Healso spent some time workingin ag sales before becomingthe agriscience and biotech-nology instructor at BCTC.As the instructor for this
program, he and his stu-dents work together onprojects such as cloning, inwhich they take a smallsection of a leaf and put itthrough a sterile process inorder to reproduce it.He said the students
learn a lot about ag busi-ness as well and have evenmade and sold goats’ milksoap and soy candles, help-
ing them to learn about themarketing and productionprocesses involved in agbusiness.Trey and Lane say they’d
be interested in careers inagriculture in the future. Both boys will be partici-pating, along with their 4-Hand FFA friends and fam-ily, in numerous shows atthe upcoming BedfordCounty Fair, which openedSunday and runs throughSaturday. For more information on
the Bedford County Fair, including a schedule ofevents for the week, visitwww.bedford-fair.com.
