Just short of a year since his maiden

elite-level victory in the Stradbroke

Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m), the James

Cummings-trained Trekking (Street

Cry) denied Adelaide local Gytrash (Lope

De Vega) victory in his hometown Group 1

sprint in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at

Morphettville yesterday.

The Gordon Richards-trained Gytrash had

the run of the race, sitting outside the leader

for the trip. He looked all but home with 200

metres to go until Trekking found another gear

and stormed home to beat the Black Caviar

Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) winner by a

nose.

Last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr

1, 1200m) winner Lyre (Lonhro) produced

another gallant effort, flashing home to finish

a length and three-quarters away in third.

Trekking was steered to victory by

Victorian jockey John Allen, who made the

decision to spend two weeks in isolation in

South Australia to be able to ride across the

It is a decision that has proven fruitful

for the Irish jockey, who won the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)

aboard Russian Camelot (Camelot) a week earlier.

"What a great little horse," Allen said. "This is my first time riding him

but I was surprised when I got out to the mounting yard and just realised

how small he was.

"But he was tough. We had a super run.

"The runner-up gave a really good kick. I thought when I got out we

were going to catch him. He kept kicking but to my lad's credit he really

fought and put his head down on the line."

Trekking was just the second horse Allen had ridden for Godolphin

and the first since Cummings has taken over as head trainer.

"I think I might have had one ride for them (Godolphin) before

around Kyneton in a maiden," Allen said.

"It was good to get the ride today.

"They're obviously very famous colours and James Cummings is part

of a very famous family.

"It's my first ride for him as well so it was a good start to our

partnership, hopefully."

Trekking (5 g Street Cry - Outdoor by Redoute’s Choice) has won ten

of his 28 starts, six of them at stakes level, with prize-money totalling

$3,765,495.

The Darley-bred gelding is one of three winners out of the three-

time scorer Outdoor (Redoute’s Choice), who is a half-sister to the

stakes-placed pair Minnesinger (Lonhro) and Entertains (Street Cry).

Trekking’s second dam is the three-time Group 1 winner Serenade Rose

(Stravinsky).

Outdoor produced a second stakes winner yesterday when Winnie

Star (Medaglia d’Oro) won the Macau Derby Trial (Listed, 1500m). She

has a weanling filly by former Darley shuttler Ribchester (Iffraaj) and

was covered by Street Boss (Street Cry) last spring.

Street Cry (Machiavellian), who died in 2014, is responsible for

23 individual Group 1 winners including champion mares Winx and

Zenyatta.

Wisdom lands milestone for Headwater

The Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained Wisdom Of Water provided

his sire Headwater (Exceed And Excel) with a milestone win at the Gold

Coast yesterday, becoming the Vinery Stud resident’s first stakes winner

when taking out the Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3, 1200m).

The two-year-old’s runaway victory also proved momentous for Aquis

Farm, who acquired a 50 per cent share in the colt earlier this week.

Wisdom Of Water justified his clear-cut favouritism for the two-year-

old feature, leading the trip before scooting away in the home straight to

win by two and three quarter lengths ahead of Tick Tock Boom (Spirit Of

Boom) and Superare (Exceed And Excel), who dead-heated for second.

Toby Edmonds is yet to win a Group 1 as a trainer but he believes

Wisdom Of Water can get the job done in the J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m) on

June 6.

"He has had the two runs now and he should be cherry-ripe for the

Atkins," Edmonds said.

"I suppose the question is whether he will run a strong 1400 metres

around Eagle Farm in the Atkins.

"There wasn't much tempo in this race on paper and we elected to go

forward. He rocketed out of the barriers and had to lead.

"I am sure if something else wants to lead he can take a sit on the

pace."

Purchased by Blandford Bloodstock

at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $70,000 out

of the Eureka draft, Wisdom Of Water (2 c Headwater - Regal Tier by

Royal Academy) has now had five starts for three wins, earning a total of

$309,600 in prize-money.

He is one of three winners out of Regal Tier (Royal Academy) who

herself is out of Tiercette (Tierce), making her a half-sister to dual stakes

scorer Tierqualo (Sequalo). Tiercette also produced Zedatier (Zeditave)

who is responsible for stakes winner Flamboyer (Clang).

Regal Tier last year foaled another Headwater colt and was covered

by Encryption (Lonhro) in September.

Headwater has sired four individual winners and will stand at Vinery

for a fee of $13,750 (inc GST) in 2020.

Another juvenile stakes win for Maher and Eustace

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace have produced another stakes-

winning two-year-old this season in the form of Macroura (Snitzel), who

took out the Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill yesterday.

Stepping up to stakes level at just her third start, Macroura looked

trapped for a run in the home straight before a gap opened up at the

300-metre mark and she was able to sprint past the frontrunners to score by

a length and a half under James McDonald.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Marboosha (Dream Ahead) was

second with Panna Cotta (Fastnet Rock) coming home a further length and

three quarters away in third.

No future plans have been confirmed for Macroura, however a tilt at the

J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on June 6 is not off the cards.

"It's a shame today wasn't 1200 (metres) and then your natural

progression could have been to go to the J J Atkins," assistant trainer

Annabel Neasham said.

"That's going to be a bit of a jump to go from 11 to 14 but we will see how

she comes through and consider it. She does switch off so she may well get

that trip.

"We will just let the dust settle. She is an out-and-out two-year-old so we

would probably like to get one more win on the board before putting her out

for a spring campaign."

Neasham said Macroura shared similarities with Magic Millions 2YO

Classic (RL, 1200m)-winning stablemate Away Game (Snitzel), who is also

small in stature but has a desire to win.

"Ciaron always says she has reminded him of Away Game but she's

come to fruition a bit too late to have the same accolades," Neasham said.

"But they're similar in that they're small but they're mighty and have big

hearts. She doesn't know how to do anything else but win this filly."

McDonald described Macroura as a professional filly and thinks she is

worthy of a shot at the Atkins.

"I would say she is more of a sprinting, very fast two-year-old who excels

when the pace is strong and she can come off their back and sprint very

quickly," McDonald said. "No harm in trying and this is the right time to

do it."

Macroura (2 f Snitzel - Zenaida by Zabeel) is an Aquis Farm homebred

and is unbeaten from three starts, earning $144,965 in prize-money.

She is the first foal out of Zenaida (Zabeel) who herself is out of the

unraced mare Madison Avenue (Morcon), making her a half-sister to three-

time Group 1 winner Vosne Romanee (Electronic Zone) and the stakes-

placed Meursault (Ekraar).

Macroura’s third dam, Madison Square (Marceau), also produced

Group 1 scorer Hear That Bell (Ring The Bell), while three-time elite level

winner Allegro (Red Tempo) also features further down the page.

In 2018, Zenaida produced a colt by Exceed And Excel (Danehill) who

was purchased as a weanling by Ampulla Lodge for $240,000 at the 2019

Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale. He was then offered at this year's Inglis

Australian Easter Yearling Sale where he was snapped up for $380,000. In

2019 the mare produced a filly by Snitzel's (Redoute’s Choice) young sire

son and Aquis Farm resident Invader.

Macroura became the 102nd stakes winner for leading sire Snitzel and

the fifth bred on the Snitzel / Zabeel (Sir Tristam) cross.

Snitzel, who is on the cusp of landing a fourth champion stallion title,

will stand at Arrowfield Stud for a fee of $165,000 (inc GST) in 2020.

Oceanex books Cup spot

Talented mare Oceanex (Ocean Park) has booked her ticket to the

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in November, taking out the ‘win and you’re in’

Andrew Ramsden Stakes (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington yesterday.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained four-year-old returned to

Flemington for the first time since taking out the Matriarch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m)

in November last year, and remains unbeaten from three starts at the course.

Ridden by Mark Zahra, Oceanex jumped from the inside barrier and

settled in the perfect position just behind Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m)

winner Too Close The Sun (Carlton House), who led the trip.

Zahra steered the mare off the rails in the straight and the pair burst through

a gap with 300 metres to go, fighting off Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) winner

King Of Leogrance (Camelot) to win by three-quarters of a length.

"There'll be a bit of nerves now," Price said. "These owners, they're like

mums and dads, the Bonbeach footy club boys are in it. It's going to be a

sensational story."

After three unplaced runs over shorter distances in Sydney earlier in her

campaign, Price took the recommendation of Tom Marquand who suggested

the mare would improve over longer trips.

And that she did, winning the Port Adelaide Cup (Listed, 2500m) at her last

start before yesterday.

"Tom Marquand rode her in Sydney and said, 'Do you want to try this over

a mile and a half?" Price said.

"So her first go at 2500 (metres) in Adelaide was strong and today was

fantastic.

"I know she drew barrier one and got the gun ride, but she beat the right

horse in the race and she won convincingly."

Despite training a plethora of Group 1 winners over the last decade,

Oceanex will be the stable’s first Melbourne Cup runner since 2005 and Price

said he will need to think about how to campaign her leading into the staying

feature.

“I'll have to think about it now, the pressure is on," Price said. “She hasn't

had a grinding stayers prep or anything. She's got a beautiful clean set of lungs

and she stays."

Oceanex (4 m Ocean Park - Danex by Danasinga) has only finished out of

the placings in five of her 18 career starts which has seen her accrue $676,970

in prize-money.

She was purchased by Price for NZ$70,000 at the NZB Premier Yearling

Sale at Karaka and is one of eight winners from the stakes-placed Danex

(Danasinga), which include the BRC Rough Habit Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) winner

Amexed (Pentire) and the stakes-placegetters Marcellina (Savabeel) and

Digital Fortress (Savabeel) as well as the five-time winner Danahere (Dehere),

who produced Listed winner Saint Patricks Day (Excelebration).

Danex has a two-year-old filly by Per Incanto (Street Cry), a weanling colt

by Pierro (Lonhro) and was covered by Coolmore’s undefeated Triple Crown

hero Justify (Scat Daddy) last spring.

First for HeadwaterVinery Stud’s first season sire Headwater

(Exceed And Excel) recorded his first stakes

winner yesterday when Wisdom Of Water (2 c

ex Regal Tier by Royal Academy) took out the

Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3, 1200m)

at the Gold Coast. Headwater will stand for

$13,750 (inc GST) in 2020.

Hightail snares Gold Coast feature win in Guineas

After two luckless runs at the Gold Coast in the

past, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Hightail

(3 g Written Tycoon - La Paris by Falvelon) made

it third time lucky yesterday when he took out the

Gold Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1200m). The three-

year-old gelding finished third in last year’s Magic

Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) and fourth in

the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) in

January. Ryan Maloney produced a well-timed

ride aboard Hightail to defeat The Odyssey (Better

Than Ready) by a nose with Exhilarates (Snitzel)

a further length away in third. "They went very

quick in front and he really found the line in the

final 100 metres," Maloney said. "I got to The

Odyssey at about the 200 metres but he just kept

giving and my bloke had to find plenty. Hightail

was probably a pair closer than I wanted but he

travelled beautifully and I think there is a good

race in him."

Four for Love Conquers AllRecent Queensland returnee Love Conquers

All (Mossman) provided a timely reminder of

his prowess as a stallion when siring his fourth

individual stakes winner yesterday in the form of

Silk Stocking (Listed, 1200m) conqueror Love You

Lucy (4 m ex Whitechapel by Giant’s Causeway).

The Barry Squair-trained mare sprinted home

alongside Chris Waller’s Fiesta (I Am Invincible),

defeating the Star Thoroughbreds mare by a nose,

with a long head back to Jen Rules (Redoute’s

Choice) in third. A homebred for Leo Goggins,

having acquired Whitechapel (Giant’s Causeway)

for $3,000 at the 2013 Magic Millions National

Broodmare Sale, Love You Lucy has now won

$252,950. She has a two-year-old sister, the

unraced Bonnie Boru (Holy Roman Emperor),

while Whitechapel slipped when returning

to Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) this year.

Love Conquers All will stand at Clear Mountain

Fairview for $5,500 (inc GST) in 2020.

Lucy repays Squair with Silk Stocking winAll was forgiven between trainer Barry Squair

and his leading lady Love You Lucy after she

took out the Silk Stocking at the Gold Coast

yesterday. Squair arrived in the Gold Coast

winners’ circle with his left hand strapped after

a trackwork incident involving his mare earlier

in the week. "Lucy dumped me on Tuesday and

I hurt my shoulder and wrist. That is it for me

as a trackwork rider, my wife has put her foot

down," former leading jockey Squair said. "It is

the biggest win of my career as a trainer but I

haven't decided where to go next. She is a good

horse and we will find something extra for her. I

gave her a real chance today and she will win at

further than 1200 metres."

Four for IlovethiscityNoor Elaine Farm resident Ilovethiscity (Magic

Albert) registered his fourth individual stakes

winner yesterday when Chapel City (6 g ex

Chapent by Peintre Celebre) took the R A Lee

Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). Purchased by Gordon

Richards for $35,000 from the Dingelydell draft

at the 2015 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling

Sale, Chapel City took his earnings to more than

$440,000 with his first stakes win yesterday.

Chapent (Peintre Celebre) produced another

Ilovethiscity colt last year and is back in foal

to Puissance De Lune (Shamardal), by whom

she produced two fillies in 2015 and 2016.

Ilovethiscity stood for $5,500 (inc GST) last

year, serving 59 mares.

Upsets abound as Chapel City takes Lee For the second time in his career, Chapel City

proved a fly in the ointment to punters as he

took the R A Lee Stakes at 150/1. The Gordon

Richards-trained gelding came from last to win

at 80/1 on debut in June, 2016, and he again

proved the nemesis of punters yesterday as he

came through to defeat market fancies Seabrook

(Hinchinbrook) and Harbour Views (Le Havre).

“Perhaps we’ve got to get him out to 100/1 all the

time,” Richards joked on Racing.com. Ridden

by Georgina Cartwright, Chapel City scored his

first stakes win at his 46th start. “Even though

the horse was at big odds, the Gordon Richards

stable is in hot form,” Cartwright said. “He actually

surprised me to be honest. He was having a step

up in grade from last start, but surprised me with

the turn of foot he showed.”

Two for Shooting To WinSecond season sire Shooting To Win (Northern

Meteor) recorded his second individual stakes

winner when Extra Time (2 g ex Gwynethanne

by Handsome Ransom) took the National

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Morphettville yesterday.

The Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-

trained gelding broke his maiden with victory

in the National Stakes, defeating debutant

Kazuhiko (Deep Impact) by three and a quarter

lengths, with a nose back to Hard Rock Girl (All

Too Hard) in third. Extra Time, who sold for

$140,000 from the draft of Armidale Stud at the

2019 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, is

the first foal out of Gwynethanne (Handsome

Ransom), who herself was sold for $85,000

to Aquis Farm at last year’s Inglis Chairman’s

Sale; she has an Alpine Eagle (High Chaparral)

yearling and an Impending (Lonhro) weanling.

Shooting To Win will stand at Darley’s

Kelvinside property in the Hunter Valley for

$16,500 (inc GST) this year.

Expensive yearling beaten but not bowed at first startOne of the most expensive yearlings bought at

auction in 2019 was beaten on debut yesterday,

but was far from disgraced. Kazuhiko, by Deep

Impact (Sunday Silence) out of Grito (Redoute’s

Choice), was purchased for $1.7 million at last

year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by

a collective involving Spendthrift Australia,

Kennewell Racing and Group 1 Bloodstock.

Sent out as the $4 favourite, Kazuhiko made

ground late to finish second behind Extra Time

in the National Stakes.

25 for So You ThinkSo You Think (High Chaparral) added a 25th

individual stakes winner to his record yesterday

when Realm Of Flowers (3 f ex Astral Flower by

Kalanisi) took out the SA Fillies Classic (Gr 3,

2500m). The Anthony Freedman-trained filly

was sent out favourite, coming off a win in a

Murray Bridge Benchmark 60 handicap last

week. She came from well back in the field to

defeat Silent Sovereign (Dalakhani) by three-

quarters of a length with Bellx (Rock Hero)

three and a quarter lengths away in third.

Realm Of Flowers was purchased as a yearling

for $180,000 by James Bester Bloodstock from

the draft of Arrowfield Stud. So You Think will

stand at Coolmore Stud for $38,500 (inc GST)

this year.

173 for Redoute’s Choice The late Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) produced

his 173rd individual stakes winner yesterday

when Oasis Girl (3 f ex Siwa by Green Desert)

took out the Centaurea Stakes (Listed, 2030m)

at Morphettville. The Mathew Ellerton and

Simon Zahra-trained filly was perfectly rated on

the speed by Georgina Cartwright and held off

the late surge of Nerve Not Verve (Shocking) by

a head with La Belle Jude (War Chant) a length

and a quarter away in third. A homebred for

the Molloy family, Oasis Girl is the seventh foal

to race from Siwa (Green Desert). She missed

when visiting Redoute’s Choice again in 2018,

in what turned out to be the champion stallion’s

last season before his death in 2019.

102 for Snitzel

Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) is fast chasing down

his prolific sire as a producer of stakes winners

and he made it 102 individual stakes winners with

Macroura (2 f ex Zenaida by Zabeel) taking out

the Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill

yesterday. Snitzel will stand for $165,000 (inc

GST) at Arrowfield Stud next season.

Five for Deep FieldNewgate Farm resident Deep Field (Northern

Meteor) sired his fifth individual stakes winner

yesterday when Fituese (3 f ex Cattalo by Tiger

Hill) scored a classy win in the Denise’s Joy

Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill. Fituese

justified her position as an odds-on favourite

by scoring by a length and a quarter over

Aquitaine (Exceed And Excel), with a half-

length to Sally’s Day (More Than Ready) in

third. Purchased by Prime Thoroughbreds for

$55,000 from the Magic Millions Perth Yearling

Sales from the Western Breeders Alliance draft,

Fituese has now won five of her seven starts and

accumulated $216,065 in prize-money. She is

the third foal out of Cattalo (Tiger Hill), with

the mare having produced fillies by Mahuta

(Flying Spur) the last two seasons. Deep Field

will stand for $55,000 (inc GST) this year.

Denise’s Joy a Fit for Prime fillySyndicator Joe O’Neill has already unearthed

one talented three-year-old filly in the form of

Rubisaki (Rubick), but the promising Fituese

may be able to join her in forming a strong

Prime Thoroughbreds brigade in the coming

months after her win in the Denise’s Joy Stakes

yesterday. The John Thompson-trained Fituese

could now be bound for Queensland after her

victory under Rachel King. "There was more

pressure than we were expecting but credit

to Rachel, she didn't panic," Thompson said.

"She just let the horse travel, gave her plenty of

room in the straight and she did the rest. I was

worried today. There were some pretty good

fillies in this race. I've got a healthy respect for

the second horse and to win like that, she's a filly

going places. We'll see how she comes through

this. There's a couple of races in Queensland

that she could possibly head up for."

33 for Written TycoonNew Arrowfield Stud recruit Written Tycoon

(Iglesia) registered his 33rd individual

stakes winner yesterday when Dirty Work

(3 c ex Maidel by Ad Valorem) took out the

Ortensia Stakes (Listed, 1100m). Racing in the

Spendthrift colours, Dirty Work raced away

for a two and a half length win over Star Boy

(Pluck), with a nose to Bon Amis (Bon Hoffa) in

third. Spendthrift Australia went to $800,000 to

secure Dirty Work at the Inglis Australian Easter

Yearling Sale from the draft of Sledmere Stud.

He has now won four of his 13 starts and looks

destined for further success. He has a yearling

sister who did not go through the sales ring this

year, while his dam Maidel (Ad Valorem) is now

in foal to Written Tycoon’s best-performing son

Capitalist. Written Tycoon will stand at his new

Hat-trick for Dirty Work in OrtensiaTommy Berry is in awe at the improvement that

Dirty Work has continued to make as he has

matured, predicting that he can improve if he

continues on the right trajectory. “If you had told

me he was going to do this at the end of his last

prep, I wouldn't have believed you," Berry said.

"Even from the horse I rode two starts ago to today,

the difference is chalk and cheese.” Dirty Work has

gone from being one of Sydney’s most frustrating

sprinters to being one of the city’s rising stars,

having won his last three starts in a row.

Irithea adds Dark Jewel to recordAfter years of trying to win the Dark Jewel Classic

(Gr 3, 1400m), Bjorn Baker finally took the spoils

with honest mare Irithea (6 m Snitzel - Kirovskaya

by French Deputy) at Rosehill yesterday. In a

speed-dominated affair, Irithea chased down

long-shot leader Ready To Prophet (Smart

Missile) to take victory, with Into The Abyss

(Foxwedge) splitting the pair. "When she can take

a sit and roll along I think she is at her best and

it really worked out well today," Baker said. "I

have always wanted to win the Dark Jewel, I just

didn't think it would be at Rosehill. It is obviously

the race of the carnival and I'm very excited. She

has been a stable stalwart, Irithea, and she always

puts her best effort in." Irithea may now head to

Queensland for her next start.

Ranier unlikely to follow Luskin Star path to EverestRanier (4 g Lonhro - Kanzan by Commands)

followed in the footsteps of stablemates Osborne

Bulls (Street Cry) and Trekking (Street Cry) by

taking out the Luskin Star Stakes (Listed, 1300m)

at Rosehill yesterday, but James Cummings

doesn’t expect that he will be following the same

path come the spring. Both Osborne Bulls and

Trekking went on to finish third in the The Everest

(1200m), in the same year that they won the

Luskin Star. However, Cummings is aiming lower

with Ranier. "The Everest isn't on his radar right

now, we're realistic," Cummings said. "But I'll tell

you what is, is the Stradbroke. It's three weeks out

from the Stradbroke and the horse is going to be

arriving down on the limit and he's going to be in

winning form so there's a lot to like about that."

Dawn Passage takes Inglis GuineasDawn Passage (3 c Dawn Approach - Raja Lane

by Devaraja) is likely to tackle the Stradbroke

Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) after winning the

Inglis 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) yesterday. The

scratching of hot favourite Masked Crusader

(Toronado) made it an easier task, but the Gai

Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Dawn

Approach never looked in doubt at any stage,

winning by a length and a quarter over Rocha

Clock (Pierro). "We will certainly contemplate

setting him for the Stradbroke now,"

Waterhouse said. "Why wouldn't we? He's

racing in such great form, he's improving all

the time and I know Adrian has been so happy

with his trackwork." Jockey Adam Hyeronimus

added: “I've ridden some horses that have

won good races and ran well but I don't think

I've had a horse accelerate like he did that last

furlong. So it was very impressive.”

Emotional return to WA for Vega Magic

It was a happy homecoming for Vega Magic

(Lope De Vega) yesterday as he took the Roma

Cup (Gr 3, 1200m) at his first start in Perth in

more than three years. Since he’d last raced in

Perth, he had won two Group 1 races and had

started favourite before finishing runner-up in

the inaugural The Everest (1200m) in 2017. It

was no easy task for Vega Magic, who had to

fight hard to overcome Durendal (Medaglia

d’Oro) with The Velvet King (Universal Ruler)

also flying late to add to a photo for the minors.

However, it was the Sean and Jake Casey-

trained Vega Magic who took the prize. “I could

never, ever be so emotional after a race,” Sean

Casey said. “That many people have helped us,

it’s just amazing how many phone calls I’ve had

this week and every one of his service providers

did what they do on him.” Yesterday’s win took

his prize-money beyond the $4 million mark.

Prezado goes back-to-back at FlemingtonStraight-track specialist Prezado (Denman) made

it four wins over the Flemington 1000 metres

when prevailing in a blanket finish in the Furphy

Dash (1000m) yesterday. The Mathew Ellerton

and Simon Zahra-trained Prezado came with

a flying run under Jamie Kah to defeat favourite

King Of Hastings (Ilovethiscity) by a head with

Milwaukee (Fastnet Rock) a further nose away in

third. "He just tucks the head down and he's got

a better finish the quicker they go up in front,"

Zahra said. "I was having a look at the splits and

they were breaking 11 (seconds) in the last 400

(metres) and 200 (metres). Credit to the horse,

he's really come of age and really appreciating the

new style of training, out of the stable a little bit

and back in."

Import Super Titus impressesThe British-bred Super Titus (Dansili) landed

his second Australian victory at Flemington

yesterday, taking out the Lexus Trophy (2000m)

to provide Lindsay Park with a treble and jockey

Luke Nolen a double. Super Titus proved too

strong for Mahamedeis (Magnus), beating him

by a short head, and connections hope he could

develop into a Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2,400m)

contender. Co-trainer Ben Hayes said: "He's

been racing well this prep, just getting too far

back and flashing home. The big with him was

getting him to settle and since we've put the

hood on he's really relaxed."

Hayes’ high hopes for SikorskyBen Hayes hopes to aim Sikorsky (Pierro) at

the Kennedy Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on Derby Day

at Flemington after the four-year-old landed a

benchmark 78 handicap over the same distance

at the track yesterday. Hayes, who trains

Sikorsky in partnership with David Hayes and

Tom Dabernig, said: "Today proved to us that

he's come back really well (after an injury in the

2018 Victorian Derby). I'm sure Ollie (Damien

Oliver, winning jockey) will be very happy with

what he felt under him today."

Straight experience pivotal in Divine winTwo-year-old Divine Caprice (Sebring) took

advantage of her previous straight-track

experience to score in yesterday’s AAMI Next

Generation Sprint (1000m) at Flemington.

Divine Caprice, trained by David and Ben

Hayes and Tom Dabernig, was among five of the

11 runners to have already raced, but was the

only one to have raced down the Flemington

straight previously. "She’d had two runs down

the straight before whereas all the others

hadn't," Ben Hayes said. "She travelled really

well and extended well to the line for a fantastic

win." Yesterday’s race was the first heat of a new

series for sprinting two-year-olds at Flemington

with a 1200-metre final over the straight course

in July. "She handles the straight really well, so

I don't see a reason why we wouldn't push on

towards that," Hayes said.

Weight drop helps Romakash in Coast winTough gelding Romakash (Roc De Cambes)

is likely to target the Tattersall’s Cup (Gr 3,

2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 13 as his first

stakes outing after taking the 2200-metre open

handicap at the Gold Coast yesterday. Trainer

Matt Kropp has bought a number of staying

prospects at the New Zealand sales in recent

years, including Romakash. "The best of them

was probably Trusty Lad who won the Three-

Year-Old staying series here," Kropp said.

"But this bloke has won nine races now so he

is getting up there. There is a 2400-metre race

coming up so he can have a crack at that. The

weight drop helped today and Larry rode him

perfectly.”

Northern Territory victory on Goodwood dayStar Hills (Magnus), who won a potentially

deadly battle with an Eastern Brown snake,

showed he can also handle himself on the

track when winning the 1050-metre handicap

at Morphettville yesterday. "He should have

been dead," said Northern Territory trainer

Bob Richard. "He nearly got bitten by a snake

but he killed the snake himself. He stomped

on him and he hit him about four times."

The five-year-old scored under jockey Ethan

Brown and was winning for the first time

since joining Richard after Allen Browell

retired last year.

Allen suspended once moreJohn Allen was handed his second big-race

suspension in as many weeks when winning

The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville

yesterday. The jockey won the race with

Trekking (Street Cry) but was suspended

for six meetings for causing interference.

It follows a suspension issued by the SA

stewards in last week's South Australian

Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), which he won aboard

the Danny O'Brien-trained Russian Camelot

(Camelot).

NEW ZEALAND

Wheeler welcomes government supportTrainer John Wheeler has applauded this

week’s announcement of an emergency

support package by the New Zealand

government, although he argues the errors

of successive governments have brought

the country’s racing industry to its knees.

“Since 2003 when the government basically

took over the running of the TAB, we have

gone slowly downhill,” Wheeler said. “By

my calculations, since 1951 we have given

the government, through duty, in excess of a

billion dollars. I felt the government owed it

to us, but by the sounds of a lot of comments,

you wouldn’t think so.” The Hall of Fame

trainer has excelled with both flat horses

and jumpers and is viewed by his peers as a

trailblazer, particularly for the success he has

had beating the Australians on their home

turf with horses like (Our) Poetic Prince

(Toy Pindarri), Rough Habit (Yeats) and

Veandercross (Crossways).

Northland, not Gold Coast, for RaeTrainer Kenny Rae was meant to be lapping

up the sun in Queensland this winter, but

instead he is back at his sunny Northland

property contemplating the future of his

home course at Ruakaka. “Eamonn Green

and myself were supposed to be going to

the Gold Coast with three or four horses all

through May and all June,” Rae said. “He has

got an apartment there. We stayed there two

years ago. It is usually the horses that don’t

front up, but the people couldn’t this time.”

Rae is best known in Australia for the feats of

(Our) Egyptian Raine (Desert Sun), who was a

Group 1 winner in New Zealand and a Group

2 winner across the Tasman for him before

transferring to Grahame Begg.

ASIA

139 for Medaglia d’OroOn a day in which Trekking (Street Cry) scored

another Group 1 success in The Goodwood, his

younger half-brother Winnie Star (Medaglia

d’Oro) scored a first stakes victory in the

Macau Derby Trial (Listed, 1500m) at Taipa

yesterday. It brought up Medaglia d’Oro’s

139th individual stakes winner and gives the

American stallion the chance to complete

the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m)-Macau

Derby (Listed, 1800m) double after Golden

Sixty won the Hong Kong Derby in March. The

Macau Derby comes up on July 19.

Hong Kong International Sale horses breeze at Sha TinThe 15 lots who will go through the sales ring on

Saturday as part of the belated first session of the

2020 Hong Kong International Sale breezed-up

on the Sha Tin turf yesterday morning. The first

session features horses purchased by the Hong

Kong Jockey Club from sales in the UK, Ireland,

France, South Africa and Argentina, with the

Australian and New Zealand lots set to go under

the hammer in July. Among the catalogued lots

is an Exchange Rate (Danzig) half-brother to six-

time Group 1 winner Invasor (Candy Stripes). The

sale will begin at 10.30am (HKT, 12.30pm AEST)

next Saturday in the Sha Tin parade ring and will

be broadcast live through the HKJC website.

All-the-way for Danon Smash in Keio Hai Spring CupDanon Smash (5 h Lord Kanaloa - Spinning

Wildcat by Hard Spun) scored a fifth stakes win

yesterday, but a first above Group 3 level, when he

took out the Keio Hai Spring Cup (Gr 2, 1400m)

at Tokyo. Danon Smash was tackling some of

Japan’s best sprinter-miler males, with many

set to tackle the Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m)

next month. Sent off as second favourite, Danon

Smash was rated to a tee by Damian Lane on the

speed, slowly increasing the tempo throughout

before holding a length and a quarter margin at

the line over Stelvio (Lord Kanaloa), with Groove

It (Lord Kanaloa) making it a trifecta for the sire.

INTERNATIONAL

Overseas runners allowed for Guineas, Coronation CupForeign-trained runners will be allowed to run in

the first two Classics of the disrupted British Flat

season, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA)

has confirmed. The news could be music to the

ears of Aidan O'Brien, Ireland's champion trainer

who has won four of the last five runnings of the

2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), and three of the last

four of the 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m). However, no

overseas runners will be allowed to run in Listed,

Group 2 and Group 3 races until June 15 and no

internationally-trained horses will be permitted

to take part in any races of Class 2 level and

below until further notice due to concerns about

elimination levels. The plan is for racing in Britain

to resume on June 1, with the first Group 1 of the

season, the Coronation Cup (Gr 1, 1m 4f), due to

take place at Newmarket on June 5.

Margins: 0.1 lens, 1.8 lens. Time: 1:10.38(last 610m 34.87).Betting: $10.00, $3.00, $16.00.

Then followed: Behemoth (AUS), Order Of Command (AUS), Santa Ana Lane (AUS), Xilong (AUS), Bold Star (AUS), Amberdi (AUS), Zoutori (AUS), Sunlight (AUS), The Inevitable (AUS), Li’l Kontra (AUS) & Jungle Edge (AUS), last.

Analysis: With a well timed run Trekking got the upper hand in the last stride to add a second Group 1 victory to his career tally of 10 wins (six stakes) at start 28. He jumped fairly but settled midfield, one out, finding the rail from the 800m. Giving the leader (Xilong) four lengths approaching the 600m he looked pocketed and rounding into the straight the situation looked no better. At the 300m he got a lovely split, balanced and charged after the leaders. Taking some time to really wind up he was a length from the leader at the 100m but gradually wore him down to get the last stride in at the post, the margin a short half head. Gytrash sat just back and outside the pace all the way to the top of the straight, eventually levelled up at the 200m and went for home. He looked the winner near the 100m but was worn down and caught in the last stride for a gallant second.

Lyre was a hopeless second last at the top of the straight and somehow threaded her way between runners the length of the straight and flew into third just short of the line. Behemoth was last at the 400m, went widest and finished very strongly for fourth. [LJ]

Margins: 3.5 lens, 0.1 lens. Time: 1:11.32(last 610m 35.25).Betting: $7.00, $4.00, $11.00.

Then followed: Diala (AUS), Riched (AUS), Zoushine (AUS), Miss Guggenheim (AUS), Yes Baby Yes (AUS) & Yule My Hero (AUS), last.

Analysis: The addition of blinkers corrected a last start green performance from Extra Time and he had this under control a long way from home, cruising away for his maiden win and stakes win at start four. He was a step slow to begin but soon rushed forward one out to lead from the 1000m. Past the 600m he was two lengths clear and rounding into the straight hugged the rail and slipped them. Full of running he was never in danger and was able to ease near the line yet still three and a half lengths in front. Kazuhiko settled fifth (rails), made ground from the 600m and was fourth at the 300m. Still fourth at the 100m he found more late to grab second just short of the line. Hard Rock Girl moved up to second inside the 400m, did most of the futile chasing to the 100m then faded to third while Diala, from third at the 300m, battled on for fourth. [LJ]

Margins: 0.8 lens, 3.3 lens. Time: 2:43.20(last 610m 36.76).Betting: $2.60, $8.50, $10.00.

Then followed: Tralee Rose (NZ), La Falaise (AUS), Stick ‘Em Up (AUS), Raptures (AUS), Lindelani (AUS), Act Of Aggression (AUS), Lion’s Share (AUS), The Mockingbird (AUS), Goldie Guru (AUS), Twilight Magic (NZ) & Angel Rock (AUS), last.

Analysis: Appreciating the step up in distance, Realm Of Flowers outstayed her opponents quite comfortably here for her fourth victory (maiden stakes) at start seven. Midfield early, one out, she drifted a few places down the back and was fourth last inside the 1000m. She began to improve from the 800m and with 500m remaining gained quickly, rounding into the straight five wide. A length off the lead at the 300m she levelled up then went clear at the 150m. To the line she was not going to be caught, up by three quarters at the post. Silent Sovereign was last at the 800m, tracked the winner from the 600m but had to move further out in the straight to challenge. She tried hard and took ground off the winner but had to settle for second, the first two clear of the rest. Bellx was handy enough in third at the 600m, moved up to co-lead at the 200m but could not match the first two, battling on for third from Tralee Rose who got going late to nab fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: Wisdom Of Water, a good fourth in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast in January, is now unbeaten in two runs this preparation. He began quickly and went straight to the front. He then travelled along at a good tempo before drawing away from the 200m to score impressively. Tick Tock Boom, a maiden after four starts, settled in last place, improved between runners at the turn and then came with a strong late finish to dead-head for second in a promising performance. Superare raced in seventh place, got through to fourth at the 200m and kept fighting well to dead-heat for second with Always On Show holding on for fourth after having a nice trip in third place on the rails. Then followed: All Too Huiying (AUS), Aristocratic Miss (AUS), Shrouded In Mist (AUS), Nipperkin (AUS), Waging War (AUS), Snogging (AUS), Roselli Sting (AUS), Dexter You Devil (AUS), Vinland (AUS), Hussybay (AUS) & Mongolian Marshal (NZ), last.

Analysis: Chapel City caused a major upset here at triple figure odds, getting up in the last stride to record his maiden stakes victory and seventh career win. He began well but soon drifted through the field to be midfield. At the 600m, locked way on the fence, he needed luck. Still locked away rounding into the straight he took the shortcut, drove up to fifth at the 300m, moved out at the 200m then went after the leader. Within a length at the 50m he tried hard and nabbed the win in the last stride by a head. Seabrook had a lovely rails run in third from the 800m, moved up to second at the 300m then took over approaching the 200m. He went more than a length clear at the 100m, looked the winner but was nabbed in the last stride. Harbour Views improved quickly but wide rounding into the straight then kept up a strong run for third from All Too Huiying who was third at the 200m then clung on for fourth. [LJ]

Then followed: Scathing (AUS), Ready Babe (AUS), Ruuca (AUS), Garibaldi (AUS), Command’n’conquer (AUS), Bellevue Hill (AUS), Stampe (AUS), Zac Attack (AUS), Baroda (AUS), Elegant Grace (AUS) & Final Declaration (AUS), last.

Analysis: Hightail, winner of the Gosford Guineas (Listed, 1200m) in December did well in recording his second stakes success here, albeit narrowly. After his first-up win at Randwick-Kensington in a benchmark 88, he settled in seventh place (between runners), eased deeper at the turn and then finished well to grab victory on the post. The favourite The Odyssey raced outside the leader (Bellevue Hill), went to the front on turning for home, only to be caught on the post for (half-head) second in a very solid performance. Exhilarates raced back in 12th place (on the rails), improved between runners at the turn and she then finished on well (out wide) over the latter stages for a good third in a smart first-up effort with Scathing battling on well for (1.9 lengths) fourth, advancing in class here. Analysis: After running many good races without winning, Irithea broke through for her first success since taking out the Hawkesbury Crown (Gr 3, 1300m) in April last year for a deserved victory here. She showed her customary pace and soon crossed from a difficult barrier (16) to race in third place, one off the rails. She moved up at the 200m, went to the front at the 100m before going on to score a good win. Into The Abyss settled in seventh place on the rails from her inside barrier (1), improved on the inner at the turn and continued to fight on well on the rails for a good second. Ready To Prophet went to the front and set a good tempo. She was only overtaken at the 100m and then held on for third after running a bold race. Sweet Scandal was back in eighth place (between runners) at the turn and she made good late ground for (1.3 lengths) fourth. [KB]

Champion 2YO & Dual G1 winner

Analysis: Fresh up after a 37 week break, grand campaigner and former dual Group 1 winner Vega Magic held on valiantly for his 14th win in 27 starts, taking his earnings beyond $4 million. He was third away but went forward to take over, one out from the 800m. He was headed at the top of the straight, fought back to lead narrowly at the 200m but to the line was hotly challenged from both sides yet never relented, keeping his neck in front to the line. The Velvet King drove up to second past the 600m, third turning in then got going again at the 100m but could not overhaul the winner for close second. Durendal was second at the top of the straight, took over narrowly approaching the 200m but kept trying hard for a close third from Flirtini who came out of the pack from the 300m and finished strongly for a close up fourth. Analysis: Never on the track here last start, Humma Humma found this class much easier and was much too good to score her third stakes win and sixth overall. She was tad slow to begin but soon rushed forward to sit sixth, finding the fence past the 600m. She was in deep traffic at the top of the straight but found a split one off the fence at the 200m. At the 100m she switched back to fence, drove along the rail then raced away for a nice win by a length and a quarter. Kabini sat fourth (rails) at the 600m, went up to third at the top of the straight, co-led at the 100m but could not accelerate with the winner. A super run from Street Icon who was well back turning for home, pulled out wide and finished strongly for third from Be My Star who caught the pacemaker at the 250 then fought on well to hold fourth. Analysis: Talented filly Macroura was quite impressive in winning again to remain unbeaten in three starts. She began well from her inside barrier (1) and then settled nicely for James McDonald in seventh place on the rails. However, she was held up for clear running on straightening before McDonald steered her through a gap at the 200m. She then took the lead shortly afterwards and went on to score with something in hand. Marboosha, a winner at her first two starts, was wide early on before settling in third spot, one off the rails. She moved up to challenge at the 300m, briefly hit the front and then fought well for a very good second. Panna Cotta raced in fourth place on the rails, got along the inner on turning for home and fought well to gain third in a photo from Bellevue Star who worked in the early stages from her wide barrier (10) to find the lead and then held on well for (3.4 lengths) fourth after leading the field until halfway down the straight. Analysis: Last start winner of the Port Adelaide Cup (Listed, 2500m), Oceanex earned a ticket to the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) with a nice staying effort here. She settled fourth (rails) with a lap to run, picking up one spot past the 1800m. Still third at the 1200m she was passed by several from the 800m but handy enough without covering extra ground. Starting the run home she moved out but was pocketed, then drove through a split at the 300m to co-lead at the 200m. She lowered her head and took over by a half length at the 100m then edged further ahead for a nice win by three quarters of a length, her third stakes and sixth win overall in 18 starts. King Of Leogrance made his run from the 1000m, went up three deep and was third at the top of the straight. He led narrowly at the 300m and when collared by the winner fought hard to the line for his second. Super Girl was shuffled back at the 600m, improved quickly to fourth at the 300m and kept on well for third. Skelm, from last, kept up a solid run in the straight for fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: Backing up from a Caulfield win seven days ago, Oasis Girl did practically all the work in front and was rewarded with her maiden stakes success and fifth win in 10 starts. She was away well to be fourth early then drove up to take over at the approaching the 1600m, holding the lead comfortably to the 800m. Inside the 600m she quickened and rounding into the straight slipped away by two lengths. At the 200m she still had them by two, a length clear at the 100m then hung on gamely when challenged to prevail by a long head. Nerve Not Verve sat sixth (rails) at the 600m, improved to fourth at the straight entrance then went after the winner, tried hard to the line but came up short. La Belle Jude chased the winner into the straight and kept on well under pressure for third from Bertwhistle who turned in third and battled hard along the inside for fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: Ranier, winner of the Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) at Rosehill in the spring is now unbeaten in two starts since resuming. After a smart beginning, he settled in fourth place, one off the rails, behind a reasonable tempo before moving up nicely rounding the home turn. He then sprinted well, got to the front at the 100m and went on to score a good win. Brave Song settled back in eighth place, improved (out deep) on straightening. He then continued to run on well to finish second, beaten just over a length. Eleven Eleven settled closer than expected, racing in third place on the rails. He challenged strongly and took a narrow lead at the 200m and then battled on quite well for third after seeming to have had every chance. Trumbull settled near the tail of the field, commenced a wide bid on turning for home and continued to make ground to finish a good (1.7 lengths) fourth. The favourite Graff had a nice run in fifth place on the rails, eased into clear running at the turn but just battled in the straight under his top weight (59kg) for (3.2 lengths). [KB]

Then followed: Satin Socks (AUS), L’cosmo (AUS), Wayupinthesky (AUS), Military Magic (AUS), Intrepidacious (AUS), Bring The Ransom (AUS), Monetizing (AUS) & Bella Rosa (AUS), last.

Analysis: The John Thompson-trained filly Fituese is building an imposing record, now winning five of seven starts and she staged a smart performance in taking out her first stakes race in scoring here. She settled nicely for Kerrin McEvoy in sixth place (with a trail) before improving on straightening. She then finished strongly, hit the front at the 100m and went on to score comfortably. Aquitaine staged a good first-up effort. She raced outside the leader (Monetizing), went to the front at the 300m and then held on gamely for second after running a bold race. Sally’s Day settled back in eighth place, improved between runners at the 300m and kept running on well for third in an encouraging performance, advancing in class here with Satin Socks holding on for (3.1 lengths) fourth after being prominent most of the way. Analysis: The Toowoomba-trained mare Love You Lucy, improved by three runs back, scored her seventh win in 17 starts and her first stakes success in winning here. She travelled well in sixth place, but wide, before moving up (three wide) nearing the turn. She was under pressure halfway down the straight but lifted well to grab a narrow but very good win. Fiesta settled back in ninth place, on the rails, angled deeper and into clear running at the 200m and came with a late run to just miss for (short head) second, looking unlucky. Jen Rules raced in eighth place, wide with cover. Improved (deep) at the turn and kept finishing on well for a close-up third. The favourite Niedorp worked from her wide barrier (13) before settling outside the leader (Bold Arial). She got to the front at the 200m and showed gameness in fighting for fourth, beaten a half-length in a keenly contested finish. [KB]

Analysis: Dirty Work made it three on end to celebrate his maiden stakes victory at start 13 with an easy win here. He was first out but was headed soon after to settle fourth (rails) past the 800m. Continuing to save ground he camped in behind the lead to the top of the straight where the leader drifted away from the fence allowing him a beautiful run through. He co-led with three others at the 300m but at the 200m drove clear and was untroubled to the line by two and half lengths. Star Boy sat just back and outside the leader (Villami) to the 400m, took a narrow lead but was caught at the 300m and although no match for the winner, kept on gamely for his second. Bon Amis sat fifth, one out at the 600m, pushed out and ran up to co-lead briefly at the 300m then battled away for third from Handle The Truth who from midfield finished fairly for fourth. [LJ]

Then followed: True Detective (AUS) & Bandersnatch (AUS), last.

Analysis: Dawn Passage followed his victory in the Hawkesbury Guineas (Gr 3, 1400m) at Rosehill on April 25 with another smart performance in winning here. He settled nicely outside the leader (Bandersnatch) travelling at a moderate tempo before challenging at the turn. He got to the front at the 200m and then fought back strongly for a very good win. The filly Rocha Clock raced in fourth place (tracking the eventual winner). She looked a threat at the 200m and then battled gamely for a second in a very honest performance. Lightly raced filly Air To Air, a winner of a maiden (1600m) at Kembla on April 28 at her third start did really well in finishing on from the tail of the five-runner field to take third, advancing significantly in class here. True Detective battled on for (4 lengths) fourth after having an ideal trip in third spot on the rails while Bandersnatch tried for (4.4 lengths) last after leading to the 200m. [KB]
