Writing Our school is well and truly rolling up its sleeves in terms of our work with the teaching of writing. Reading will always be one of the cornerstones of our work, for as the saying goes, “If you can read, you will succeed.” However, writing is close behind in terms of importance for the learning of our students and it is a skill, that when used well, can open many doors. Our staff members are working on understanding how students write, the best ways to enhance the development of student writing and ways to empower students to improve their work. It is exciting and enriching work. Dogs As a companion to 2 canines and a dog trainer in a previous life, I appreciate the joy and companionship that our furry friends bring. However, some of our students have allergies to dog hair and some a quite frightened by dogs, even if they are well-meaning. When we utilise a dog during school time for school programs, there are many processes that we put in place to minimise risk and to consider the wellbeing of the dog itself. As a member of the school community, I would appreciate your understanding of these circumstances by not having your dog near the school. This just removes some discomfort from the lives of our people. Life Last week I shared with you the thinking from an article called “Twelve Priorities for a Great Year”, written by Daniel Stamp. He encouraged the reader to imagine their life as a game in which they are juggling six balls in the air - Work - Family - Health - Friends - Spirit – Learning. He stated that the work ball is the only one made of rubber. If you drop it, it will usually bounce back. But the other five balls are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it might be irrevocably marked, damaged or shattered. He encouraged the reader to make 'the balanced life' a priority. He shared 12 thought starters to help you kick off the year. Here’s the last 6: 7. Take Risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave. Don't be afraid to
encounter risks. 8. Love. The quickest way to receive love is to give; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it
too tightly; and the best way to keep love is to give it wings. Don't shut love out of your life by saying it's impossible to find.
9. Slow Down. Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you've been, but also where you are going.
10. Appreciate Others. Don't forget that a person's greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.
11. Learn. Don't be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless, a treasure you can always carry easily.
12. Be Aware of Your Time and Words. Don't use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved.
Have a great (and bravely balanced) fortnight.

WOODLINKS SUPER READERS
PBL NEWS
WoodLinks Newsletter 07 August 2019
We have now learnt about four of our WoodLinks Heroes! Most recently we learnt about the famous author,
JK Rowling. We investigated how she has used a growth mindset to overcome challenges and have a successful
career. Students learnt that at first, JK Rowling was turned away by twelve different publishers before she finally
published the first of the Harry Potter books.
Encourage your kids to take risks this week and practice using their resilience skills. Using a growth mindset can
be fun and help all of us achieve great things!

NEWS FROM THE YEAR 4 COHORT
SAKG NEWS
P&C NEWS
It has been a great start to the term in Year 4! We have been working hard in the classroom and learning so
many new things!
In English, we are exploring quest novels through the text Rowan of Rin. In this novel, the main character
Rowan faces a range of challenges which test his courage and strength. He learns to be brave through his trials
and never give up. We think this reflects an amazing Growth Mindset and encourages us to do the same. If
you’re at the front office, check out our Rowan of Rin foyer display to see the wonderful things we have been
learning!
In Mathematics, we are exploring all things FRACTIONS. Our brains have been buzzing as we learn about
proper, improper and mixed fractions, how to find equivalent fractions and even how to show fractions on a
number line. We are also continuing to expand our knowledge of multiplication and division and becoming
number fact whizzes!
In Science, we are investigating natural and processed materials. We have learned that materials have physical
properties that suit a particular purpose. Can you imagine if a pan was made from chocolate or a shirt made of
wood? We’ve enjoyed learning about the ways science helps us understand the world in new ways.
Have an amazing week!

MUSIC NEWS
WoodLinks Newsletter 07 August 2019
Congratulations to Maisy and Emily for performing in the Australian String Teachers’ Music festival on the
weekend. These two students travelled to Brisbane and performed with a piano and each received a lovely
report on their playing along with a trophy. Well done girls!
The process for choosing our next group of strings players have begun with an aural test currently being
conducted in the Year 2 classroom music program. This is the first step in choosing the 17 students that will
have the chance to participate in our school strings program. At the completion of this testing, I will be sending
home a letter offering year 2 students the opportunity to learn a violin, viola, cello or double bass. Those
students wishing to learn will be ranked in order of merit from the aural test and be offered a school
instrument for Year 3. The only year that students are permitted to begin a string instrument is in Year 3. The
band program for students wishing to learn a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument will commence in
Year 4. Students are only able to join one program- either strings or band. More information will follow for
students who are successful in obtaining a position in this highly competitive program. Regards,
Teena Sullivan

Do you struggle to find the funds for Excursions / Incursions / SRS?
Do you receive Centrelink Payments?
If so: are you aware that you can set up a deduction from your Centrelink fortnightly payments to
come to the school? If you are interested in finding out more or how to set up this deduction please
come into the office. We are also awaiting discussion with the P&C to see if it can include uniforms
and book packs (obviously a credit amount would be required before being able to use these funds
for this).
