Assemblymember Michael DenDekker33-46 92nd Street, Suite 1WJackson Heights, NY 11372

“Best Wishes toAmerica’s Workforce.”

On August 17, 2010,Assemblymember MichaelDenDekker (D-Jackson Heights)

joined other members of the New YorkState Assembly in presenting an offi-cial resolution from the New York

State Assembly to the Intrepid Sea,Air & Space Museum. The event, which was held on the flight deck ofthe retired aircraft carrier USS Intrepidin New York City, is part of an ongo-ing campaign by New Yorkers to bringa decommissioned space shuttle to thestate for permanent display.

The resolution, which was intro-duced by AssemblymemberDenDekker, and co-sponsored by As-sembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan), received wide and enthu-siastic support in the New York StateAssembly. It recognizes the signifi-cant achievements undertaken by theNational Aeronautics and SpaceAdministration’s (NASA) space shuttleorbiter program, as well as the historicrole played by several generations ofNew Yorkers in advancing the nation’sinterest in space. It also recognizes theunique role played by the former air-craft carrier, USS Intrepid, during theearly years of the U.S. space program.

While a copy of the resolution waspresented to the Intrepid Sea, Air &Space Museum for its collection, theoriginal was sent to NASA Adminis-trator Major General (Ret.) Charles F.Bolden, Jr., in Washington, D.C.

“Donating one of the shuttles to theIntrepid Sea, Air & Space Museumwould not only preserve this valuableequipment for future generations,”Assemblymember DenDekker said,“but would also pay tribute to the manyNew Yorkers who have over the yearsled the way in space travel, or workedclosely with the aerospace industry.”

At this time, three space shuttlesare scheduled for retirement by the endof 2010, and many of New York State’selected officials have joined the cam-paign to give one of them a new perma-nent home in the nation’s largest city.

“The transfer of a retired spaceshuttle to New York State would con-tinue to boost the state’s attractivenessas a travel destination,”

Assemblymember DenDekker added.“At a time when New York State isfacing severe financial challenges, anything that yields increased tour-ism and increased employment isworth supporting.”

Figures released by the IntrepidSea, Air & Space Museum providesome idea of just how significant thateconomic boost would be. Placementof the shuttle at the Intrepid wouldgenerate up to $71 million per year indirect spending, in addition to $106million in new economic activity.

“I urge my fellow New Yorkers totake a moment of their time to visit theIntrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’swebsite to sign the petition and learnmore about the museum and its cam-paign,” Assemblymember DenDekkerconcluded.

“For New Yorkers, she is ourfriend and our Congresswoman.-

But to women everywhere andfor all time, she is our championand our hero. Today is Geraldine’s75th birthday, and it’s also the 90thanniversary of American womengaining the right to vote. I can’timagine a more perfect day to honorGeraldine Ferraro by naming thisbeautiful post office after her.Happy birthday, Geraldine – andhappy anniversary to women vot-ers everywhere.”

“Geraldine Ferraro was a trail-blazer and an exemplary publicofficial who made history,” saidSenator Schumer. “She was anhonorable, accomplished and hardworking elected official who had aprofound effect on Queens, NewYork City and – as the nation’sfirst female vice presidential can-didate – on the country. Namingthe Long Island City Post Officeafter her is a fitting tribute to awoman who devoted a good part ofher life to the Queens community— first in the District Attorney’soffice and later in the halls of con-gress. Her passion for public ser-vice has had a huge impact on bothQueens and the nation.”Background

In 1984, Ferraro strode intohistory as the first female vice-presidential candidate on a nationalparty ticket. Ferraro was firstelected to Congress from NewYork’s Ninth Congressional Dis-trict in Queens in 1978 and servedthree terms in the House of Repre-sentatives. person during this month. DuringRamadan, there is a festival-typeatmosphere after sunset. Ramadanis a time to celebrate and givethanks. It is a time to rememberthe poor, to practice self-mastery,and to recommit one’s self to the

their faith. The end of Ramadan isa joyous occasion known as Eid-el-Fitr, typically lasting three days.It is known as the festival of ever-recurring happiness and is cel-ebrated with special prayers, feasts, sweets and gift giving.

“Many of our elected officials have indicated they may be able toattend the first meeting of our U.F.C.A. Fall schedule. For example, our legislative leaders from all branches of government (city, stateand federal) have indicated at various functions throughout thesummer that they would like to visit (schedules permitting).

Also, tradition dictates that we would like to open this meetingwith Joe Conley, President of C.B. 2. Joe typically uses this time togive us a broad overview of new issues and the progress on oldoutstanding news here in Sunnyside/ Woodside as well as on-goingprojects and concerns.

We are optimistic about our community and those who representus-that they choose to come and be with us says much about U.F.C.A.

We hope you all had a healthy, happy summer and look forwardto meeting you on the night of the 9th which should be a veryinformative get-together”

Thank you.

Doughboy Park

Dear Editor,

Park Project when their office tele-phone switch boards lit up withinquiries from concerned citizenry. On Wednesday, August 25, 2010@ 6:30 PM, Councilman JimmyVanBrammer and Mr. JosephConley met with Woodside Resi-dents and NYC Parks DepartmentRepresentatives, at one of the larg-est public gatherings ever held atthe Woodside Library. JoanneAmagrande of Queens BoroughParks Commissioner, DorothyLewandowski’s Office and theprojects Designer & Manager,Steve Whitsell, presented the plansfor Doughboy Park. Residents ini-tially gasped in horror upon learn-ing that 34 trees are to be cut. TheDoughboy Park Project is one ofthe most ambitious public worksventures that Woodside has per-haps ever witnessed. The Projectentails the construction a viewingplaza & entrance and the plantingof more than 2,500 low lying plants, where the stand of tree presentlyexists. This astonishing project

would ameliorate several of thepark’s well known infrastructuredifficulties. At the conclusion ofthe community meeting, there wasnear universal agreement that thisproject possesses the potential forgreat community good. The costthat residents are being asked tobear is the sacrifice a beloved land-mark, that is unique only toWoodside, alone. Residents musttrust that a new and extraordinarilyexciting public space will be cre-ated in exchange for their sacri-fice. Both Parks representativesJoanne Amagrande and SteveWhitsell publicly pledged to theWoodside Community, Council-man VanBrammer and Commu-nity Board #2 Chairman JosephConley that the quality outcomeon the Doughboy Park Projectwould be “astonishing” andWoodside would be, “very pleasedwith the results”. In conversationswith both Ms. Amagrande and Mr.Whitsell, after the communitymeeting, I pointed out that the de-

original figure has frown for $787Billion, then to $814 Billion, latelyto $862 Billion. Any moregrowth? We need ‘transparency’on the allocations, since many‘stimulus’ billions merely paidstate government debts, simplystimulating more state govern-ment spending. For example, Vir-ginia got $1.5 Billion to pay itsdebts, and a mere $2 thousand forinfrastructure! Meanwhile, untoldthousands of teachers’ jobs weresaved. This is infrastructure stimu-lus? What jobs were created? Andremember, 70% of Americansagree with Arizona. After all, ille-gal aliens are still illegal.

Concerning the mosque, 70%,and the percentage is growing, ofAmericans oppose a mosque on asite so close to ground zero thatpart of a 9/11 plane broke off andlanded on the building at thatsite! How hard is it to understandthat we don’t want it there! Thereare 2 mosques already nearby.Build the center on one of thosemosques.

Incidentally, where is Sena-tor Schumer on all this? Wherehas he been hiding? For some 13years he has forced his way ontoSunday night TV news, pontifi-cating every week about justabout every subject. With themosque controversy, he has sim-ply disappeared. Where is he? Imiss him on Sunday night TV.

Al Volpe,Woodside

Dear Editor,

Regarding the Woodside Her-ald letter of August 27th concern-ing Arizona’s law on illegalaliens: Let me get to the point:The primary blame for this messbelongs to the negligent FederalGovernment. If the Federal Gov-ernment enforces its own law, there is no Arizona law. That’smy simple point. In overturningthe Arizona law, Federal JudgeBolton did not exonerate the neg-ligent Federal Government.

Where the “Mexican Wall”was built, 90% of illegal immi-gration was stopped. Therefore, use stimulus money to finance thewall. Only $6 billion will do it.

Speaking of “787 Billionstimulus money allocated,” the

Woodside remains a commu-nity in shock over revelations theNYC Parks Department had qui-etly commenced a major $1.7 mil-lion parks construction project, atDoughboy Park. The project in-volves the destruction of a stand oftrees much beloved by the com-munity and will radically alter theidentity and character of the entireneighborhood for better or worse, during decades to come. NYCCouncilman, Jimmy VanBrammerand the Chairman of CommunityBoard #2, Joseph Conley were sur-prised to learned of the Doughboy

sign of the proposed viewing plazawould diminish the experience ofthe park for many park goers, sincethe plaza faces directly onto a dis-trict of particularly gritty and unat-tractive rooftops. I am urging bothMs. Armagrande and Mr. Whitsellto tweek the Doughboy Park View-ing Plaza design and account forthis by including some taller bushesand shrubbery so the offendingrooftops are not allowed to intrudeso deeply into the park. This couldalso translate into easing some ofthe communities legitimate andintense concerns.
