FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2013 FREE SERVING SUNNYSIDE-WOODSIDE AND LONG ISLAND CITY Get Out Your Bowties and Pearls! by Mary Caulfield On August 30th, CM Jimmy Van Bramer was joined by Judy Zangwill, Executive Director of Sunnyside Community Services, and seniors from around Queens to announce he has secured $2.6 mil- lion in capital funding for the ex- pansion and complete renovation of the heavily utilized Western Queens senior center. “Sunnyside Community Ser- vices is a borough-wide institution that each and every single day gives seniors the opportunity to enjoy life through quality recreational activities, inspirational program- ming and interactive services that keeps them active and engaged,” said Van Bramer. “I am proud to have delivered on my promise to UNITED FORTIES CIVIC ASSOC. MONTHLY MEETING (continued on page 4) “This was a surprise for us, says Manny Gomez, President of Sunnysideartists.org. “We are holding a double gala on one night.” “The ‘Luke Adams Sunnysider of the Year’ Award is going to Frances Schmidt for 2013, and Donald McCallian for 2014.” Only one person is named per year, Gomez explains. “The board vote was a landslide tie, so we decided to celebrate successive years in one night!” The dinner and award cer- emony will take place at the Tangra Ballroom on Queens Blvd., Thurs- day, October 17, with tickets at $37.99. The event is not-for-profit and the award is given without regard to politics, fundraising or religion – a thank you for excep- tional service to the community. Both recipients selflessly serve a wide range of organizations, 30- plus between them, without asking for recognition or reward. Both these Sunnysider’s have done so consistently for decades, making them exceptionally – if often invis- ibly – valuable to every member of the Sunnyside-Woodside commu- nity. Fr. Brian Dowd, Pastor of Queen of Angels and last year’s winner, says that Frances Schmidt “has a constant desire to bring friendship and kindness to every- one she comes in contact with. She brings out the best in herself and in others.” “Donald McCallian,” reports Pat Dorfman, SunnysideArtists founder, “is the go-to guy be- cause he hears of a need and he cannot stop until he takes care of it, no matter how hard the task. No one knows when he sleeps. His lovely wife, Eileen, must feel like a EMT dispatcher.” Luke Adams, for whom the event is named and was honored first in 2011, warns, “It sold out last year, so purchase your tickets early. We needed a bigger space this year to fit everybody. We are picking up the honorees in a SUV limo this year, and bringing them to the ‘red carpet.’ We selected menu items, which will please the anti-spicy palates. It is delicious.” Commenting on Adams’ name on the award, Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan says, ”Sometimes when people are still with us, we often don’t realize the huge impact they have on a community. make this expansion a reality for our community. I look forward watching this institution thrive for years to come. There is nothing more important than providing valuable resources and program- ming for our City’s seniors.” For decades Sunnyside Com- munity Services has offered a va- riety of programs to seniors from across the borough. Each year SCS provides 53,000 hours of health and home care services each week to 1,500 homebound residents of Western Queens. The agency serves 15,000 people annually. With the funding allocated by the Council Member’s office, Sunnyside Community Services will undergo a complete renova- tion plan that will develop an open floor plan which will foster a bet- ter working environment as well as an improved integration and coordination of senior services within the organization. “We are very grateful to Coun- cil Member Jimmy Van Bramer for his tremendous support for Sunnyside Community Services,” said Ms. Zangwill, Executive Di- rector of Sunnyside Community Services. “His support for this capi- tal project shows, once again, that he understands the importance of senior services, and he understands how to empower nonprofits to pro- vide high quality services to those who rely on us.” (continued on page 2) Thursday September 12th @ 7pm St. Teresa’s Parish Center, 50th Ave & 45th St., Woodside ALL ARE WELCOME!
