    Building

    Matntenance

    Archl. Krau

    ing a particular piece orhardw'tre

    will

    have

a strong influence on lhe way a project is

    designed.

    For example.

    to

    mount

    the

    gl

    a s s doer s

on the upper butch cabinets of the

    wall

unit, W used a special pivot hinge. These

hinges are attached directly to the ghlS$-

so you don't have to build a frame around

the glass jU$t for the hinges.

That certainly had an effect on the de

sign-and gives the overall appearanee of

the cabinet a much cleaner look.

    CLT

TO fIT. Weve made a point of in

cluding a Materials List with almost every

project to show the final dimensions of

each piece used to build the projecL

As we were putting together the rather

extensive Materi.ls List for the wall unit, I

began to think about the accuracy of all the

    dimensions

    we

    wer e show ing

You know. I tltoughtlo myself. I'm

checking all ofthese numbers Lamake sure

all the dimensions listed here are as accu

rate as possible. Yet I know I didn't use

any of these dimensions to build the

    project.

Now I don't mean Ijust made up a bunch

of numbers to put in the Materinls List and

used the right one. to build the project. I

mean that every dimension given in the

    Materials List

    is

    subject to change. It's a

    matter of cut to

    fit

    U

you use. ruler to make a CUl,you can

only get so close - maybe within II , .But

    if

    you're off

    V :

on several cuts, all of a

sudden a lot of dimensions start changing.

That's when you should forget the Mate

    rials List and ~0fit

This is really one of the fundamentals of

    woodworking. You've heard the phrase,

    ~1easure tw ice . cut once . \ \'ell. it sa nice

phrase, but to gel the best Accuracy you

    have to

    go

    a step beyond that.

It's more a matter of cutting twice and

checking the fit. That doesn't have the ring

of a phrase to remember, but it ill yield

    better results.

Put the ruler away and make multiple

cut 0 sneak up on the fit. If you're

    cuuing

a tongue and groove joint, for ex

ample, the tit of the groove on the

    tongue

    is

    more a

    mauer

    of'touch than measurement.

The difference between a nice friction

fit and a loose and sloppy fit is probably

only a few thoussndtbs of an inch. This is

    very difficult tomeasure. But

    it

    is possible

    to

sneak up on this kind of cut,

    M d f R i

the fit of the pieces as they go together,

Then you know you're right on the money.

And that's woodworking at its best.

    ABOUT TiUS ISSU E.

    ,'henever we SiLdown

    to plan an issue of

    Wood tith

    we have

    high hopes of

    show

ing a lot of projects and

    nil the techniques it lakes

    to

    build them.

    It stands to reason that the more pro}

    eeis

we show in an issue the more likely

one will catch someone'. fancy. And we're

well on the way to pleasing everybody.

But it never works out that way. And

    the truth is, that

    kind

    of approach is very

limiting. The more things we show, the

less space we have to show them in. So we

wind up with a more is less issue. I'd

much rather lake the space required to

show as many of the del.ail~ 3S we can for

    building a project.

    All of

    this

is my way of saying: In this

    issue

    we

have one big pro ject and

    \\~e'\'e

taken half the issue to sbow how to build it.

    The project

    i ~

    modular wall unit that h

    as

    s

    several interchangeable components.

The se modul ar s to rag e systenl are a

relatively new kind of furniture. It's

    fur-

niture that works for you instead of

    re -

    meting you. MOSlstorage furniture (like

a bookcase, dresser. Or hutch) permits a

    certain

    amount of space. and

    il M

    up to you

to make what you have to store fit the

    space

But the modular nature of these new

systems means the furniture can be

    changed

    to

    meet your needs. The Oexibil

    ity

each wall unit is the result of ha ing

several eemponems that can be inter

changed - that is, moved around to

change the overall function of each unit.

    t the

    sante

    t ime each component is

itself very Ilexihle, The shelve>, for exam

pIe, can be changed to serve as display

racks. The base cabinets are designed to

have either doors or drawers, And the

    fall-front cabinet can be

    used

    for storage or

    as a desk.

WiLball this flexibility you'd expect It to

be a difficult project to build .. TUlItthe

opposite is true. Only one joint (n longue

    and groove)

    is

used to build the frames and

    all of the components.

That'. what made this project so inter

esting to build. What looks complicated is

actually quite simple. A. I was working on

each component. it seemed small and cer

tainly manageable. But when all the tom-

ponents nrc assembled. iLbecomes quite a

large project with many possible ar

rangements. That's whyit took us 10pages

to shew just how simple this proj,'(:t is.

    IUJU)WARE.

    I'd like to mention some

thing about the hardware we used on the

wall unit. One of the biggest, problems with

designing a project is finding the right

hardware. We spend a lot of time looking

through catalogs because very often find-

    After spending

    a o

    years establishing

    themselves as a

    $OUTCC

    for industrial qual

    ity woodworking equipment. Rockwell

    has

decided to get out of the woodwerking

    business completely.

Rockwell started the process back in

October of 1980. when they sold their

Portable Tool Division. Then in April of

this year. they took the la.t step by

    selling

their Power Tool Division. ending a

    30year affair with the woodwcrking

    industry.

Both the portable and stationary tool

divisionsare no set up as new.completely

    separate companies. The Portable 1'001

    Division (which produced routers. drill

    s,

    sanders.

    etc

    i. now Perter-Cable. And

the Stationary Thol l i, i,Jon (which pro-

    duced table saws.

    band saws

    jointers, drill

presses, et e.) is now Delta International.

    Although the names Porter-Cable and

Delta may be n.w to many (younger)

woodworkers. they are. in fact. the names

of the original 1001companies purchased by

    Rockwell 30 LO 40 year> ago.

    P()RTEII-CAUL.

    Porter-Cable was

    first

established around 1906 in S yra cu se, N ew

York, and had been in the portable tool

business for 55years by the time they were

    purchased by R~kwell in 1961.

    Initially after Rockwell had pui

    e

    hased

Porter-Cable, both names wei... used on

tho portable tool. to capitalize on the repu

    tntion Porter-Cable had established. But

by the late 1960s. the POrLcrC..ble name

was dropped. Rnd the entire line of port

able tools became Iu Q\\, as Rockwell.

Then in October of 1980, Rockwell sold

its portable power tools to company

called Pentair in St. Paul. ~li l lneSOLa.Pen-

    tair

decided to rename its tools Porter

Cable after a market research found it still

had a significant amount of Dame recogni

tion left over from the 19.;0,; .

I ~ITAThe name Delta originates from

the Delta Specialry Company of .Milwau

kee, Wis(:onsin. that started operations in

    1919and P I o d U C ~ > dstationary power too1o.

    Then

    in 194~.

    Delta became

    Ih

    firm of

    many companies that Rockwell

    purchased

in the woodworking field. Once Delta

    be-

came part of ROCkwell. they become

knowm as the Della Power ToolDivision uf

Rockwell until around 1956 , when all reo

ferenee. to Delta were dropped. and they

simply became tho Power Tool Division of

    Rockwell.

This is the way thinl('S .tood \\;th the
