WOODWINDS at MSU DENVER The Woodwinds Studies program at MSU Denver offers students exceptional private instruction by our dedicated faculty, and a vibrant mix of performance opportunities, from chamber music groups to large ensembles like Symphonic Band, and the MSU Denver Symphony Orchestra. The Woodwinds area hosts a large variety of visiting artist recitals and masterclasses, encouraging students to expand their musical horizons and receive feedback from some of the world’s top performers. Woodwind Faculty BiosPATRICIA SURMAN, Director of Woodwind StudiesYamaha Performing Artist Dr. Patricia Surman is an active solo, chamber, and orchestral flutist. Patricia has recently per-formed as a soloist and given masterclasses in Taiwan, Korea, Canada, and across Europe and the United States. In 2014, Patricia served on faculty at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, Greece and researched contemporary Greek flute repertoire. Her article on Ida Gotkovsky is featured on Oxford Music Online. She was recently featured in the International Alliance for Women in Music Journal, interviewed in The Flute View, and has published articles in the Journal of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors and Flute Talk Magazine. Patricia can be heard in recordings on the GIA and Mark Custom labels and as a soloist on the GIA Choralworks CD series.

David KisH, Director of BandsDr. David Kish directs the MSU Denver Symphonic Band and teaches conducting and music education courses. He also serves as Conductor and Musical Director for MSU Denver’s Ensemble in Residence, the Colorado Wind Ensemble. David has taught instrumental music at all educational levels, including a position as Associate Director of Bands and Franklin Fellow at the University of Georgia. His writings on wind literature, conducting pedagogy, and music education have been published in The Instrumentalist Magazine, Journal of Band Research, Music Educators Journal, and four volumes of the popular resource texts Teaching Music Through Performance in Band. David recently authored Volume VI of his book series Guides to Band Masterworks, published by Meredith Music Publications and distributed by Hal Leonard Corporation.

MARK Harris, Associate Professor of SaxophoneMark Harris is a dedicated and exploratory educator and performer. He has played in bands backing artists Billy Eckstein, Joe Williams, Cab Calloway, Bob Hope, Natalie Cole, the Temptations and has performed with Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd), and Fred Frith. He performs original music with Hamster Theatre, Thinking Plague, Random Axe, and performs in classical chamber ensembles Metro Wind Consort and the Lamont Sax Quartet. Mark is certified in Soundpainting, an improvisa-tional language for musicians of all styles and skill levels. As a teacher, Mark emphasizes strong technical skills, aesthetic exploration, and student-directed learning concepts that nourish creativity and set students up for success in any musical arena. His most prominent former student is the widely-acclaimed alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa.

JEFFREY MCCRAY, BassoonJeffrey McCray is Principal Bassoon of the Lincoln (NE) Symphony Orchestra and also performs with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. He has performed extensively as a guest with the Omaha Symphony, the Kansas City Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra. Dr. McCray served for 13 years on the faculty of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he was a member of the Moran Woodwind Quintet, Trio 402, and Bassoons Across Nebraska. He holds degrees from Northwestern University, Temple University, and Michigan State University. An advocate for new music and opera, Dr. McCray has ap-peared as both bassoonist and conductor in concerts of contemporary music throughout the US, including a performance of Dan Welcher’s The Wind Won’t Listen with the Grammy-nominated Chiara String Quartet.

Kathryn Dupuy, OboeKathryn Dupuy earned a MM in Performance from The Juilliard School and a BM in Performance from the University of Southern California. She is currently Principal Oboe of the Colorado Ballet Orchestra and the Colorado Chamber Orchestra, and plays woodwinds for Denver Center Attractions’ Broadway productions. She has been a member of the Colorado Sym-phony, the Boise Philharmonic, the Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra and the Pacific Symphony. In 2006 she was nominated for a Grammy award in Best Small Ensemble for George Crumb’s Ancient Voices of Children. She has performed in festivals such as Tanglewood, Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds, Bach Aria Festival & Institute, Sun Valley Summer Symphony, Oregon Coast Music Festival, Central City Opera, Sarasota Opera, and Des Moines Metro Opera.

Abby Raymond, ClarinetClarinetist Abby Raymond has held the position of Second/E-flat/Assistant Principal Clarinet with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra since 2001 and played Acting Principal Clarinet for the Colorado Symphony Orchestra from 2011-2013. Previous-ly, Abby was a member of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Springs Symphony Orchestra and the Philhar-monic Orchestra of Santiago, Chile, and has also performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestra, Colorado Music Festival and Central City Opera. As a soloist, she has appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, and the Texas Festival Orchestra. She holds a BM degree from the New England Conservato-ry of Music, and began graduate studies at Rice University and Boston University.
