VOLUME 27, ISSUE 3 MARCH 2017 Words from the President: The many pictures of rock and mud covered roadways people have been posting on Facebook recently inspired me to dig out an old Rolling Stones CD and give it a listen. (Okay, this may have had more to do with my kid recently learning how to play Satisfaction on the ukulele, but it sure fits!) One thing is for certain though, we are definitely rolling towards the Rock & Gem Show. While, I may not be getting what I want, for instance a Show Coordinator, thanks to our club's amazing Board and membership, I am getting what I need! Hats off to Dianne Brooke, Kim Noyes, Barbara Bilyeu, David Nelson, Doren Strane, and Cliff Brewen. For this past month, these folks have been shouldering both some of the larger and smaller tasks needed to make this year's show a success. We still need help with getting the word out, show set up, and staffing our club booths. I will be routing a shift signup sheet at the March general meeting - we really could use some volunteers to work an hour or two at Admissions, the Kids Activity Booth, the Club Information booth, and the Drawing. This is your ticket to free admission! In addition to the show, I am also looking forward to many of our other upcoming activities. In particular, beachcombing with Dianne, collecting along the upper San Simeon Creek with Don Pierce, and this month's meeting program on The Geology of our Local Ground Water Basins by special guest, John Neil. Words from the President:

The many pictures of rock and mud covered roadways people have been posting on Facebook recently inspired me to dig out an old Rolling Stones CD and give it a listen. (Okay, this may have had more to do with my kid recently learning how to play Satisfaction on the ukulele, but it sure fits!)

One thing is for certain though, we are definitely rolling towards the Rock & Gem Show.

Speaker Wrap-Up We learned some very interesting facts

from Jim Mills during his "Demise of the Dinosaurs" program in February. He began with the naming of the K-T Boundary: K from the German for chalk (kreide) which is prevalent in the Cretaceous of Europe and T for tertiary for the third great period of life, interrupted by two great die-offs. We learned that in 1980, the Father-Son team of Luis and Walter Alvarez theorized that the Earth was struck by a large meteorite - given the presence of the heavy metal element iridium in the clay boundary layer. Iridium is known to be more abundant in meteorites, asteroids, and comets than on the crust of the earth. In the 1990s, the Yucatan peninsula (Chicxulub) was posited as a possible location for impact of the K-T Boundary Extinction. The size of that explosion was 100,000,000 megatons of TNT. The total energy of all explosives used in World War II (including the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs) is estimated to have been three megatons of TNT.

Jim described the evidence for Chicxulub being the location of the "smoking gun" and the recent arguments against it. He showed us pictures and gave us the reasoning behind the "impact spherules" and the "shocked quartz." He discussed the timing of the massive number of volcanos erupting on the Deccan Plateau in India, that biodiversity was well into decline before the impact event and the length of time it took for the dinosaurs to become extinct. It was an interesting discussion that brought us all up to date on conversations the scientific world is having regarding this theory/hypothesis. By Laurie Pudwill

A letter from a neighbor: Hello,

I am a member of the Spring River Gem & Mineral Club in Cherokee Village, Arkansas. We are, so far, the largest contingent of rock hounds in the State. We hope that your club or someone in your club is interested in rock swapping and will do so with us. Should you pass this information on to other "rockers", not in your club, who may be interested, it would be most appreciated. We swap varying sizes of mineral/fossil specimens that were collected on club field trip digs, and individual club member’s field trip digs.

Each specimen is individually wrapped and identified. Each box should be a minimum of 10#. You can ship 10# in a medium size, flat rate, USPS box for approximately $12.00. We try to have the rocks shipped on the same day so we received them accordingly.

We have been doing this for some time and have received unbelievable amounts and kinds of rocks from all over the country. Gemmers have commended us on our selections. I am sure you will like these "gems". Should you decided to exchange rocks with us, it will be like Christmas all over and the only time the rocks come to us instead of us going to the rocks.

Anxiously awaiting your reply, I remain, Patricia A. Kimball-SRGMC [email protected]

QUICK GUIDE TO CREATING AN EXHIBIT Show time is right around the corner, and we are seeking members of our club to exhibit at the show. Even if you have never exhibited before, we would love to have you participate! Last year some of our new members did some really creative and delightful exhibits, and we have room for yours too! If you don't have your own exhibit case, you can borrow one from the club which has a limited number available for use. First come, first served, so let me know soon if you want to reserve one. The case will be set up and ready for you when you come in to set up on Friday. Your items need to fit into a space 4-feet-wide by 2-feet-deep and 2-feet-high.

You can exhibit anything hobby-related that you have crafted, created, found or collected. Your favorite rocks, rocks from your last trip, from your backyard, your fossil collection, hand-made jewelry, etc. There are many things you can put into your exhibit. Once you have chosen what you want to exhibit, lay it all out and arrange the items in an attractive manner. You may use stands or risers to make things more visible, or get creative and use non-rock objects to enhance your exhibit. The sides and bottom of the exhibit cases loaned by the club may have some liners to hide the unfinished case insides, but you can certainly bring your own materials to create liners. Lighting is provided in the club cases. Labels are good, and please include your name in the exhibit. Here are some beautiful exhibits from last year's show to give you some ideas! The exhibit application form is attached to this newsletter. And I am still looking for someone to take over organizing exhibits for our show -- please call me if you are interested or have any questions! -- Barbara Bilyeu (805)434-2708

General Meeting Minutes: February 20th, 2017 Meeting opened at 7:03 with the flag salute. The Sunshine kid was Colby Gentry. Happy Birthday was sung to Dave Clark. There were no anniversaries to celebrate in February. Guests were: Bob Harris, Steve Brevantes & his son, Elliot. Jr Rockhounds: John McCabe presented the following awards: Stone Age badge to Karen Clark (already an official rockhound), Amanda Clark received her Stone Age badge and a certificate and an agate slab for completing six badges and becoming an official Rockhound, Haley & Delaney Lloyd received their badges for fossils & collecting. Jr Rockhounds will have an exhibit case at the show and will need to bring in their favorite rock for display along with club taken picture. Participants will receive their showmanship badge. Budget: Annual Budget Report was presented by past Treasurer Doren Strane. Copies were made available. Tina Clark presented the proposed budget for this year and had copies on hand. The proposed budget is balanced only because of the Rock & Gem show's estimated profit, without the rock show the club runs at a deficit as it has in past years. Club expenses include our annual CFMS insurance fees, meeting room rental, equipment storage fees, our college scholarship fund, installation dinner & DOE sales tax. A motion to approve the 2017 budget was made and seconded. The motion was approved. Junior Director position vacancy: Jody Carlson had to resign from this position due to a scheduling conflict with school. Nominations were called to fill the position. A motion was made to nominate Galen Moyer and seconded. After determining there were no more nominations, the motion was voted on and passed. Galen will attend and participate in the monthly board meetings. Website update: The website design and content is being updated. The club did not own our domain name and is in the process of procuring it. Within a few weeks, the news site should be up. Membership was asked to "like" the Club's Facebook page & get the word out about the upcoming Rock & Gem show 22-23 April 2017. Membership: Cindy Chambers has updated the club membership forms. A roster will be distributed to the membership in March which will include member names, phone numbers, email address and the city/town of residence. No ADDRESSES will be published. In January, the club had 90 renewed members; as of this meeting this number increased to 115 paid members. Field Trips: A collecting field trip to upper San Simeon Creek was approved by the property owner, but no date has been scheduled because of the high level of creek water. It will most likely be AFTER the rock show, look for the exact date in future newsletters. In the interim, Dianne Brooke has volunteered to coordinate a beach collecting trip. An email announcement will be sent out. The club has no Field Trip Coordinator. Members wanting to coordinate a trip or have a suggestion of a place to go, should let a Board member know. ROCK SHOW: April 22-23, 2017. Set up is Friday the 21st for most of vendors and displays. Currently there is no Show Chairperson, the duties are being split up between the board members and club volunteers. Anyone interested in this position should contact one of the Board members. The theme for this year is "Out of this World", and Richard Wade will be presenting on Astronomy. The Board is also looking for other presenters. At its last meeting, the Board voted to raise the show entry fee to $5 per adult from $3 with kids 16 and under and active military still free, however since this time a Board member requested this item be brought before the general membership for consideration. After lengthy discussion, a motion was made to make the adult admission $5. The motion was seconded, and passed 31 to 10. The Board will consider a senior discount at its next meeting. A request was made for volunteers to help with the distribution of show postcards to the schools. Members wanting to have or share a vendor booth with other club members should contact Dianne Brooke (805-927-4805 [email protected]) or Kim Noyes (805-610-0603) for information.

Members should contact her at 805-610-5281 if they have prizes to donate. The Fairgrounds Liaison will be Will Persall & Tina Clark. Gravel Pit- Galen Moyer. Geode cracking - Tom Wiley. Rock Doc - Wayne Mills. Merchandise - David Nelson. Volunteers are still needed to staff our club booths and for Friday setup and Sunday take down. The Board still needs someone to take the lead on Admissions, the Club information booth, and the kids booth as well as more demonstrators. We have demos set up for gold panning, metal detecting, bead making but we would like more (rock tumbling, carving, etc). A signup sheet was routed and members asked to PLEASE sign up for what they would like to help with. Club Meeting: Sam Alvis & Karen Clark sold drawing tickets and members shared their "guest" rocks. The meeting was turned over to John Hollenbeck for our evening program. Jim Mills spoke on "The Demise of the Dinosaurs." The meeting was adjourned.
