H2O-GENTM technology
Portable fuel cells (PFCs) cover a littlefraction of the world market, which ishardly explainable if one considers thehuge number of commercialapplications in the 50-250 W powerrange (Table 1).

H2O-GENTM technology
There is little doubt that a major issuehampering the commercial diffusion ofPFCs in the power range from 100 to 250W is the hydrogen source. Systems thatmake use of compressed hydrogen arenot attractive for the need of carryingheavy and unsafe cylinders with limitedautonomy (generally 1 or 2 normal cubicmetres of hydrogen) and difficultrecharging procedures.
H2O-GENTM technology
WORGAS BRUCIATORI Srl has developed fully autonomous andportable "off-grid" power generators with an effective poweroutput of 100 W, based on advanced on-board hydrogengenerators and PEM fuel cell stacks.Essential components of the power generators are proprietaryand advanced catalytic reactors for either sodium borohydride(reaction 1) or metal composite (reaction 2) hydrolysis, knownwith the trade mark H2O-GEN.As shown in reaction (1), half of the hydrogen produced isextracted from water which is therefore a reagent and aneffective hydrogen-storage material. Likewise, all the hydrogenproduced upon alkaline hydrolysis of a proprietary metalcomposite is essentially released by water (reaction 2).cat
NaBH4 + (2 + x) H2O → 4 H2 + NaBO2. xH2O (x = 2‐4) (1)
M + x H2O → M(OH)x + x/2 H2 (2)
H2O-GENTM technology
The H2O-GEN technology involving NaBH4hydrolysis shows its maximum degree of innovationin the way the hydrolysis catalyst is immobilizedand activated as well as in the control system of thehydrolysis temperature and the composition of theborohydride co-reagent.
WO2013/021242 A1; WO 2013/021243 A1)
H2O-GENTM technology
With NaBH4 as water activator, hydrogen fluxes ashigh as 2 L/min can be steadily obtained. Sodiumborohydride is provided in the form of a compositematerial sealed in plastic cans with appropriatevolumes to produce the desired amount of energy(a standard cartridge provides 750 Wh).
Estimated cost of 1 kWhto the end user: 25-35 €
H2O-GENTM technology
The reactor involving metal composite hydrolysis (reaction 2)is based on a proprietary, intellectually protected technologyallowing for an effective control of the hydrogen flux whichcan be as high as 12 L/min, hence potentially able to feed upto 1 kW PEM stacks. This type of H2O-GENTM power generatoris provided with four cartridges for an overall energy of 1kWh.Most importantly, the H2O-GENTM reactor with the metalcomposite activator can be used innumerable times as therecyclable cartridge is the reactor itself.
Estimated cost of 1 kWhto the end user: 5 €(lower gravimetric hydrogencapacity as compared to NaBH4 activator)
PCT/IT2013/000022; PCT/IT2012/000397)
H2O-GENTM technology
For portable applications, the hydrogen generators caneffectively operate at external temperatures rangingfrom -15 °C to 40 °C. When used to feed a 140 W (peakpower) PEMFC stack, the hydrogen flux is fixed around1.8 L min-1 at 0.3-0.4 bar, but the modularity of thehydrolysis reactors and of the fuel cell stacks allows fordifferent customizations. In particular, the power rangecan easily be expanded for flexible adaptation to therequirements of the application. The devices are practically silent and neither carbonmonoxide nor carbon dioxide is emitted, which allowsthe power generators to run indoors with no problem. The hydrolysis exhausts (alkaline solutions of inorganicsalts) can be disposed by regulated procedures.
