Ben joined Oliver James Associates in 2012 as a Researcher, and rose through the ranks to become a Director. Today, he oversees five teams covering the European market, with his sights firmly set on our newly opened Milan office.
At 21, Ben came to Oliver James with a degree in Geography and Geology, and some basic direct sales experience. He wasn’t to know his journey would be one of the company’s most successful, leading to five desks under his watch and three consecutive awards for the
‘Year’s Highest Billing Consultant’, as well as him breaking the company’s 12-month billing record of £1.07 million – a feat he achieved in 2016.
In a given day, Ben will check in with his teams, attend manager meetings and go on client visits to prime destinations. “It’s exciting to know I could be in Dublin one day and Milan the next. Regular travel simply comes with the territory.” One of his favourite aspects of the role is the opportunity to speak to key stakeholders. “You’re given access to a senior network from day one. It’s a big thrill to know you can win business and close deals with high-profile individuals.”
Ben finds tangible results to be his main motivation because “the idea of success isn’t enough.” He also notes the importance of building relationships internally. “I like to help the people in my teams, supporting them through each stage of the recruitment process so they can become repeat billers.” Both factors culminate in his goal to realise Oliver James’ massive international potential;
“we have the skills, people, knowledge and leadership to go all the way in this market.”
Social
The job isn’t without its challenges though, as Ben acknowledges that “recruitment is a very competitive market. You’ve got to hire the best people and attract top talent, while continuously improving your processes.” Complacency has no place in his world, as he pushes himself to view each day with new eyes. “Of course, the rewards more than make up for the drawbacks, with amazing earning potential, non-stop personal growth, and a place at the table of a business on the rise.”
Outside work, Ben plays in the competitive company five-a-side football team, battling other internal teams for the top spot. He loves horse-racing, and has shares in a horse as a regular punter at Chester Races. Ben also owns a dog-walking business – showing that even his hobbies are approached with entrepreneurial flair. Family-orientated to the end, he goes home to Hawarden, North Wales as often as possible, where he shares his successes with loved ones.
Culturally, Ben views Oliver James as “work hard play hard, while still being caring. You get all the help you need because the management wants to ensure everyone has the resources to thrive.” He also speaks of the solid infrastructure offered. “I have the operational support to do my job without having to worry about areas where I’m not as strong.” It’s this sort of forethought that shows our leadership is always one step ahead, “with the intelligence and insight to make smart decisions about our future.”
If Ben could sum up Oliver James in three words, they would be “ambitious, passionate and fearless.”
