Five Financial Tips for Future ParentsPreparing your finances for parenthood is just as important as preparing your heart for your new addition. Here are tips to help get you ready for your little one’s arrival.

1. Check your budget. If you don’t have a budget, start making one. Know where all your money goes now before you plan for the future. If your spending exceeds your income, work on cutting expenses.

2. Build your savings. It’s never too early to start saving for college. Asking for gifts of deposits to your child’s college fund instead of toys can really pay off once your child is ready to graduate.

3. Check your coverage. Find out how much of the medical costs your health insurance will cover. If you’re adopting, learn about the associated costs.

4. Watch your spending. As tempting as it is to buy every adorable baby item you see, you’ll want to watch your spending. Ask experienced parents what things new parents really use.

5. Work together. You and your spouse need to talk about where you can make changes in your current lifestyle to accommodate your new arrival. And remember every good financial plan needs to be flexible.
