Application Case History
SITUATION:Adhesive that cured too quickly in summer and too slowly in winter was costly, diffi cult to manage and meant lost business for an Australian manufacturer of sandwich panels for trucks, trailers and recreational vehicles. The highly viscous two-component liquid polyurethanes were very diffi cult to spread across the panels and the narrow temperature application range (15°C to 30°C) meant it cured too rapidly in summer and was too slow and thick in winter. Very low elongation created brittle and rigid bonds. To make matters worse, the weight of the polyurethane used was costing the company business; close to 400gsm of adhesive was used, making the panels too heavy for some customers.
SOLUTION:Macroplast UK 8101
RESULTS:A 56 per cent cost saving.
THE RESULTS:Macroplast UK 8101 is proven for sandwich panel construction by customers through Europe’s icy winters to the extremely hot and humid Middle Eastern summers. The Macroplast UK 8101’s longer open time is coupled with a much broader temperature application range (10°C – 35°C). Its lower viscosity makes it easy to mix and apply year-round by hand using a roller brush. It does not cause pumpability/extrusion issues when using a mechanical applicator. High elongation properties cater for the thermal expansion of dissimilar materials and bonds are less brittle, avoiding the risk of stress cracking at cold temperatures. The Macroplast UK 8101 adhesive creates a far stronger bond, boasting a tensile strength up to 14 MPa. Because only half as much adhesive is required, the sandwich panel manufacturer has been able to win new business with its lighter panels. The company shaved its annual adhesive use by 8 tonnes and reaped labour savings. In total, it cut the cost of sandwich panel lamination by 56 per cent, which represented a six-fi gure sum.

Adhesives versus Fasteners
Henkel Australia business development engineer, Ben Derrick says that manufacturers are embracing the Loctite product “because the end result is a tougher, more reliable and better looking trailer that cost less to build than a conventional model.”
To illustrate the time and cost savings of adhesives over traditional fasteners, Ben points to the example of an Australian manufacturer of emergency response vehicles. Fixing the walls of the trailer to the aluminium frame involved a 5.25 hour three-step process. Holes were drilled into the wall panels before they were riveted into place and a plastic rail was then installed to cover the rivets.
The Loctite fast-fi xturing structural acrylic that replaced the rivets and plastic rails shaved 1.25 hours off the emergency vehicle assembly process. Henkel says the trailer is also now more durable. Without rivets, the risk of corrosion associated with mechanical fi xings has been eliminated and the more even distribution of joint stress has enhanced structural integrity.
Ben does however state that the wrong adhesive for the job can be just as ineffi cient as using traditional mechanical fi xings.
Another emergency vehicle manufacturer was using a high VOC solvent-based cleaner in conjunction with a single part mix bonding technology to bond mild steel sheet metal panels to aluminium framework. The adhesive required substantial clamping for 24 hours and was tedious to apply and clean off. Flexing at the bond left the sheet metal bulging unattractively, making it diffi cult to seal and paint along the panel edges.
Reviewing the production system, Henkel’s application engineers recommended Loctite ODC Free Cleaner & Degreaser that rapidly cleans substrates in a simple spray-on, wipe-off process. Loctite Structural Adhesive H8600 fi xes the panel in just 60 minutes, saving the trailer manufacturer 22 hours and resulting in a superior rigid bond line and smooth fi nish.
“Selecting the right adhesive for the job can require some specialist knowledge,” says Ben. “You’re not just buying a tube of adhesive or sealant when you choose Loctite, you’re
receiving added value in the form of Henkel’s technical expertise – whether that’s at the manufacturing or design stage of your application.”
The company forms design partnerships with OEMs to streamline production processes and lower manufacturing costs with the use of adhesives and sealants. For maximum productivity, Henkel’s application engineers consider the role of adhesives and sealants in both the manufacturing equipment and the product itself.
Trailer manufacturers with existing production lines can also uncover cost savings under Henkel’s tear-down program. Application engineers analyse production processes to identify time and cost savings associated with fasteners, sealants and adhesives.
For maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) technical staff, Loctite Maintenance Workshops provide hands-on equipment maintenance training, elimination of redundant maintenance, principles and applications of adhesives and, optionally, documented cost savings.
Ben adds, “Henkel Australia has training centres on the road constantly and Australia’s manufacturers are seeing the benefi ts of a simpler way to build tougher trucks.”
IS IT POSSIBLE TO BUILD A TRAILER WITHOUT A STRUCTURAL WELD, BOLT, SCREW OR RIVET? WELL HENKEL, THE MAKER OF LOCTITE, HAS DONE JUST THAT.
“The loctite fast-fi xturing structural acrylic that replaced the rivets and plastic rails shaved 1.25 hours off the emergency vehicle assembly process.”
