MEET YOUR WORKERS’ COMPENSATION SPEAKERSBRETT ADAIR is a shareholder in Carr Allison’s Birmingham, Alabama office and servesas Chair of the firm’s Employment Litigation Practice Group. Mr. Dorius assists clients nationwide withhundreds of cases each year, has presented and written articles on various Medicarecompliance issues and has developed client policies and procedures to ensure compliancewith the Medicare Secondary Payer Act. STEVE GARRETT has been with the Alabama Department of Labor WorkersCompensation Division for 16 years. He was Supervisor/Auditor in the Self-InsuranceGroup Fund Section until being named Division Director in January 2018. Steve is agraduate of Auburn Montgomery and Owned/Managed Auto Dealerships, Video Storesand Retail stores before coming to State employment.

SARAH HOOD RN, BSN, CCM, has worked in the nursing field for over 16 years in thearea of Cardiac Care and Case Management. Initially working as a Triage Nurse in 2014,she became the Director of D&D Occupational Triage in 2016.

LAUREN LARKEY opened the Newnan, GA clinic for BenchMark Physical Therapy in2009, and shortly thereafter completed her Manual Therapy Certification and TriggerPoint Dry Needling Certification. She was promoted to the Director of Workers’Compensation for BenchMark Rehab Partners in 2015. Also in 2015, she completed herSpecialist Certification in Ergonomics Assessment. She is a Certified Functional CapacityEvaluator, as well as an instructor for the 6th edition AMA Impairment RatingCalculation Course through ErgoScience. She teaches several continuing educationcourses including Dry Needling, Total Knee Arthoplasty, Rotator Cuff Pathology, andErgonomics for the Workplace. Her current role is the Director of Network & PayerManagement for the Upstream Rehabilitation family of brands which encompasseseducation, training, and onboarding for all clinicians as well as payer relations, programdevelopment, and business expansion throughout the Upstream footprint. She has astrong passion for health and wellness of the injured worker and believes in providingexceptional care for this population.

DELOIS H. SMITH is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and a Diversity andMulticultural Affairs Subject Matter Expert. Recently retired, after 35 years of service atThe University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), Ms. Smith held two successive VicePresident positions; initially as Vice President for Student Affairs, and her second positionas Vice President for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. During her UAH tenure, Ms.Smith held progressively responsible administrative positions in the areas of race, culture,ethnicity and inclusion. Following her service to diverse student populations, faculty, staffand administrative constituents, in 2009 she was appointed by the UAH president to headand develop the Office Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the UAH campus. In theseadministrative positions, she was responsible for strategic planning, fiscal management,and staffing of these university offices serving faculty, staff, students and administrators.Areas of responsibility included Affirmative Action, Equity, EEO issues, Federal and Statecompliance concerns, Title IX compliance, and diversity programming, training,consultation and community outreach. Ms. Smith has been awarded several honors andrecognitions: The University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Outstanding Staff Award; TheOutstanding Contribution to Higher Education Award by the Alabama NationalAssociation of Student Personnel Administrators; the Educational Leadership Award bythe Alabama A&M University Alumni Association, in conjunction with the City Counciland Mayor of the City of Huntsville, respectively, for significant impact in highereducation and contributions to the community. Ms. Smith was awarded the DiversitySubject Matter Expert recognition by the Huntsville Diversity Leadership Colloquium,and was twice awarded the Race and Culture Award by the Interfaith Mission Serviceagency. She serves and consults as a Huntsville Citizens’ Advocate for the Federal Bureau ofInvestigation/ Birmingham-Huntsville Division, and was recently appointed by the mayorto the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council and Human Relations Commission for thecity of Huntsville, Alabama. Ms. Smith is a graduate of the University of Florida with aB.A. in Psychology and a Master’s in Educational Psychology. She is a LicensedProfessional Counselor (LPC), a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), a Board CertifiedClinical Psychotherapist (BCCP), and a Qualified Intercultural Administrator (QA, IDI).She continues to serve on several community boards and organizations.
