Collaboration, Critic: Margarita JoverCompetition, University of Virginia, January 2012

The vor tex competit ion was a school wide, 10 day charette organized in teams of 10 students. The a im was to address the design of the Belmont Br idge in Char lottesvi l le, which f inds i tse l f at the intersec t ion of many di f ferent t ransit t ypes and var y ing routes. Hub Step proposes a cont inuous democrat ic sur face where a l l t ranspor tat ion occurs on one level .

urban

Disparate nodes, discontinued paths, segregated circulation define transit in the city of Charlottesville. Combining all forms of transportation, pedestrian, bus, bike, and can into a share bridge, Hub Step celebrates these differences into a central hub.

This continuous surface connects Lawrence Halprin’s pedestrian mall with other routes.

CYBERNETIC HOUSINGPhiladelphia, PA

Critic: WG ClarkStudio, University of Virginia, Spring 2011

This project aims to redensify the neighborhood of Northern Liberties in Philadelphia, by inserting small housing types on existing rooftops. The proposal intervenes into the regular housing block, causing the overall system to adapt to new densities.

The proposed material for the rooftop structures is a double polycarbonate panel system.

The aim is for the new housing to glow above the existing architectural fabric. The material is meant to invoke lightness in comparison. The panelized system was established for ease of assembly.

Structurally the cybernetic rooftop housing makes use of existing load bearing walls by directing loads to specific points.

FAYES INSTALLATIONSan Francisco, CA

by OOEE StudioPop-Up Installtion, December 2012

This pop-up installation was designed for Fayes Video & Espresso Bar on 18th Street. The aim of the project was to provide a lightweight, low cost, and easily constructable and removable ceiling installation for the Holidays. The intervention occupies the coffee bar along the window front.

installation

The installation was assembled in three days offsite and mounted to the ceiling at Fayes in an hour. The overall scope of the project was completed within a week of sketching out an overall concept for the installation.

GENERATIVE DETRITUSRichmond, VA

CollaborationThesis, University of Virginia, 2011-2012

The thesis a ims to make v is ible the re lat ionship bet ween matter and t ime with the design of a publ ic park generated by a temporar y Construc t ion & Demol i t ion rec ycl ing center. The system sor ts and combines waste mater ia l , creat ing new generat ive and changing ecologies. I n the end, the rec ycl ing center consumes i tse l f in ef for t to construc t this new landscape.

The public park changes in multiple time scales, both daily as it is shared by sorting center workers as well as visitors but aslo bi-monthly when the canal dredging produces new soil mounds. As the sorting center’s needs change so does the site, but always keeping a multiplicity of functions and users. In the end we imagine a shift in material flows which could lead the recycling industry to go extinct. In this time scale the site emerges as a new type of ecology, one which has become partially synthetic.

The recycling center is designed as a deconstructable building, based on material lifecycles and programmatic requirements. The landscape surrounding the building actively participates in the recycling process. The formation of new mounds occurs along the flood wall by combining unwanted recycled materials to form new and productive soil types. Other underused materials are combined in the canal to form a slow sand filtration system, remediating some level of toxins from the water.

Avoiding an Architecture of FearNew Orleans, LA

Critic: Betsy RoettgerStudio, University of Virginia, Fall 2010

The program required the design of a music school for the group roots of music. The fol lowing proposal re jec ts an architec ture of fear by confront ing issues of storm water by turning Bayou Road into a detent ion channel . The proposed s i te is one in which bui lding and ground are t reat ing equal ly, thus creat ing an environment in which a constant connec t ion to the wor ld is made poss ible by the creat ion of a mult ipl ic i t y of outdoor spaces.

archland

The ground at the s i te is manipulated to form mounds which foster dra inage and retent ion of water. The playfulness of these ear th works is meant to engage the music students to better understand the landscape in which they l ive.

The newly formed ground provides marching routes for rehearsals , but a lso ac ts as a barometer for f looding and water levels . The landscape of fers a number of oppor tunit ies for students to engage with the water. Along the Bayou, there are var ious places to play or s i t .

At var ious t imes of year, the amount of water onsite wi l l d i f fer depending on ra infa l l . The new vis ibi l i t y of these local environmental and c l imat ic systems wi l l help the students better understand New Or leans’ re lat ionship to water.
