Event overview Taking advantage of the presence of many of the most prestigious bridge designers worldwide for the IABSE Symposium Madrid 2014 “Engineering for Progress, Nature and People” (3-5 September), the Spanish Group of IABSE organizes the ‘Workshop on Bridge Design’. The aim of this event consists of promoting design, inspiring future generations and bringing together young designers with leading designers. It will feature talks by renowned Master and Junior speakers and an innovative workshop on bridge design guided by experts. A problem statement (footbridge) is provided at the end of this brochure for the proper development of the participants’ ideas prior to the workshop. A set of designs will be selected for their presentation during the IABSE symposium (September 5th) and a diploma will be awarded for the best designs. The workshop is aimed at Young Civil Engineers and Architects and students. The participation will be validated with ECTS in several Spanish Universities (such as CEU San Pablo, UPV, UPM, and UCLM, among others). After the workshop, the Meeting Up of IABSE will take place. This event is an excellent opportunity to meet both young and senior engineers and to be introduced into IABSE association activities in a peaceful environment (the Zarzuela Hippodrome of Eduardo Torroja). Registration to the workshop and the Meeting Up are both independent and optional. WHEN? September 2nd, 2014 WHERE? Design requirements of the Footbridge over the Manzanares River in Madrid, September 2014 The regeneration of the Manzanares River bank took place between 2007 and 2011. These construction works leaded to the Madrid Río Project, a linear park with an area of 115 ha very close to the city centre of Madrid. This park is developed along the river course, which is artificially controlled by seven dams and its banks are delimited by walls made of concrete and granite. The main canalization dates back to 1955 but with the Madrid Rio project the protection of the river banks has been improved to prevent floods with a period of return of 500 years. The Madrid Rio project included the construction of a number of bridges and footbridges as well as the rehabilitation of the existing ones. Nevertheless, even today some connections can be improved over the Manzanares River. This is the case of the location of the current study presented in the left hand side.

Requirements 1. The workshop will be carried out in groups (ranging from 1 to 3 members). If not specified every enrolled participant will be considered as an independent group. To form groups of 2 or 3 people, their names will have to be submitted to the organization by email. 2. Every group will design a Footbridge over the Manzanares River in Madrid for both pedestrian and bicycle users. This structure must provide continuity to the Portugal Avenue (a major pedestrian axis disrupted by the Manzanares River). 3. Both the materials and the formal solution of the Footbridge must be in harmony with the monumental context of the surroundings (the Segovia Bridge, the Casa de Campo Park, the Virgen del Puerto hermitage and the Royal Palace). The location and a brief description of each of these monuments can be found in the following direction: https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zYWpV9OM-nEE.kpsSuhmnpICQ 4. The Footbridge must be conceived as an expression of the technology and language of the XXI century. Furthermore, the structure must represent a contemporary urban milestone.

5. The Footbridge must connect and be accessible from three points: the Portugal Avenue, the Madrid Rio Gardens and the Virgen del Puerto Avenue. These three locations are specified in the following direction: https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zYWpV9OM-nEE.k7ABY5B854No 6. The Footbridge must be accessible for bicycles and blind and disable pedestrian. The design must also enable skaters (either on board or skates) using the structure without jeopardizing the comfort of other users. 7. The design of the supports of the Footbridge will take into account the existing tunnels across the banks of the Manzanares River at the location. These tunnels correspond to the M-30 an orbital motorway that circles the central districts of Madrid. These structures were built by the “cut and cover” system and are very close to the surface. A cross section of the location might be seen in the following drawings: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9ax0v8dahpad1gd/Workshop%20on%20Bridge%20Design.zip

Plan View

Elevation

Documentation to be presented 1. Sketches that illustrate the relation between the new Footbridge and its surroundings (plan and elevation view with an approximate scale of 1:1000). The new routes and pathways introduced into the neighbourhood by the Footbridge will be indicated together with the modifications of the existing ones. It is important to take into account that the Footbridge is not an element just placed in the site. In fact, in a number of situations a set of actuations in the surroundings are required for the project to be successful. 2. Sketches (plan and elevation view) indicating the morphology of the Footbridge together with its basic structural typology. A major concern here is the way the structure rests on the ground because of the limitations imposed by the M30 tunnels. 3. Sketches (plan and elevation view) of the main details of the structure, including the construction process. 4. Sketches to illustrate the illumination of the structure from an ornamental and functional point of view. 5. Sketches to illustrate the overall proposal and its insertion in the environment as part of the new urban landscape. The participants are free to use any drawing technique (such as perspective, collage, sketch or photomontage). 6. Brief descriptive report including: General conception and insertion in the surroundings, Structural conception, Functional conception to increase the users’ connectivity and comfort, Constructive conception.

Presentation format Each proposal will be sent by mail to the Spanish Group of IABSE ([email protected]). The email will include the following information:

- Subject: Name of the Group (introduced in the registration form).

- File (Sketches and report in pdf). This file will include all the sketches of the proposal together with the report. The file should be organized in A3 sheets with a resolution of 300 ppp. The number of A3 sheets is limited to 6.

Deadline to send the email: 4th September 12:00 p.m.

The announcement of the proposals selected for presentation during the IABSE symposium on 5th September will be carried out before 4th September 21:00 by email.
