Permanent Rainbow Lough Derg is an enormous and beautiful body of water. When considering a site - specific work for the lake shore, Joy imagined a series of fantastical art pieces which included a bridge that spanned the lake, a bench that floated on the surface of the water and an intricate floating flower garden. These are large scale, creative, exciting proposals and ideas, which can only exist, for the moment, as ‘speculative architecture’- like the 1960’s group ‘Archigram’ who proposed an enormous floating city, and a metropolis on wheels. These buildings were too ambitious to be built, but existed as inspirational proposals and live on in the imagination. For Terryglass Arts Festival 2014, Joy will make an actual artwork; ‘Permanent Rainbow’ on the lake. This will be accompanied by a publication about the making the rainbow and of the ideas behind the imaginary works.

Ruth Castle - “Lost Pastures: A Series of Paintings and Drawings of Horses”

Terryglass National SchoolOpening Hours – 11.00am – 5.00pm daily Adm: Free

Ruth Castle is an Irish born artist

now living in the north of England with

a background in craft, painting and sculpture. Her

current body of work explores the detailed complexity of the art of painting and drawing horses. Her love of horses started as a youngster growing up in North Tipperary, where her family kept horses, ponies and donkeys, among other animals.

The artist comments that ‘’I have been drawing and painting all my life but horses are by far the most difficult subject matter I have ever encountered; it is a real challenge’.’ The work in this exhibition shows her determination to draw out the spirit of these magnificent animals.

Gerardine Wisdom – “Elemental”

Terryglass QuayAdm: Free

Gerardine is a locally based artist who has won numerous awards for her work including first prizes in the RDS National Crafts Competitions.

Gerardine works with rushes she

picks from the lake, making

artworks with an aquatic theme. Her floating figures are well known on Lough Derg including The Mermaid, Equus and The Lough Keeper.

For 2014, Gerardine explores ideas of joining fire and water, so keep an eye at the quay for developments!

Further information is available from the box office during the festival.

Visual Arts at Festival 2014John Gerrard – “Daylight Fan (Orbital Camera) 2009”

Riverrun CottagesOpening Hours – 11.00am –

5.00pm dailyAdm: Free

John Gerrard (1974) is a leading contemporary

Irish artist, working internationally; best known for his sculptures that typically take the form of digital simulations displayed using real-time computer graphics. He received a BFA from

Oxford University in 1997 and an MFA

from the School of the Art Institute

of Chicago in 2000. He has exhibited at La

Biennale di Venezia, Italy (2009) and most recently at

Borusan Contemporary, Istanbul, Turkey and Screenspace, Melbourne,

Australia.

Gerrard’s piece, Daylight Fan (Orbital Camera), is a small-scale virtual sculpture. A silver fan is placed on the floor of an elegant white room, which we later discover to be a reconstructed interior from the famous Wittgenstein house in Vienna. Unlike other recent works of Gerrards where the observer is allowed to manipulate and look around the virtual scene, in “Daylight Fan” one must wait patiently to witness the work’s full unfolding. Programmed to run only during the hours of daylight, the fan’s movement is captured by a camera, which orbits slowly around it. A complete 360 degree revolution takes a full 24 hours, corresponding to the speed of the earth’s turn. The piece has a curiously meditative quality, reminiscent of the artist’s oil pump works. Its simplicity masks a complex meditation on power, energy, exchange and sustainability.

She has exhibited in Dublin, Cork and London, as well as in galleries in Finland and the USA. Commissions include works for Cork University Hospital, Galway City Museum and a number of public and privately commissioned works in London. She was awarded a Visual Arts Bursary from The Arts Council of Ireland in 2011/12.

The Rural Vernacular Company presents “The Year of the Moving Statues”, a play by Gerry Conneely. “The Year of the Moving Statues” is a satire on the nation’s tendency towards religious hysteria. Set in the fateful year of 1985, the year of the apparitions, the play explores not just religion but our attitude to money, drink, politics, agriculture and wet summers. It is wildly funny and wickedly surreal. To quote the writer “The Year of the Moving Statues represents the Irish mindset as it might have been painted by Salvador Dali”.The Rural Vernacular is a co-operative of theatrical practitioners formed to produce and develop “The Year of the Moving Statues”.

The show has performed to excited acclaim at the Mick Lally Theatre and at The Town Hall Theatre in Galway. The co-operative is managed by producer Colmcille Donnelly and writer/director Gerry Conneely. The

Rural Vernacular Company has developed two plays on the great wave

of change that has engulfed Ireland since the seventies.

“The Road to Clare” was produced at the Druid Lane Theatre in 2006 and

the current show, “The Year of the Moving Statues” is the

second in the series. Two other shows dealing with the Celtic Tiger and, then, it’s aftermath, are planned for 2015.The productions highlight

the extraordinary social and cultural changes by using the

Rural Vernacular, a language that encompassed the excitement

and humour of public discourse in pre-industrial Ireland and which has now

almost disappeared.

Each recipient was invited to give Síofra an insight into their lives and capture this in a digital image.

The resultant exhibition will give the viewer an insight into the many and varied experiences of our diaspora from those who left decades ago to our recent wave of departures. The exhibition will run in a specially created micro-theatre located in the village square.
