M O D E R N S T O R Y B O O K S C R I P T

A playful alphabet that has fun written all over it! This charming, casual, easy script gives a fresh, modern twist to the traditionally scripted alphabet. In this full-day workshop, you’ll be introduced to your calligraphic tools and how to use them. You’ll then learn a series of simple strokes that form this whimsical yet elegant alphabet; first lower case letters, then capitals. We’ll also examine the finer details of letter endings, connectors, ligatures, numbers and punctuation. Strokes will lead into letters, letters into words, and words into sentences…and voila! You have a brand new, useful and versatile alphabet style that is also easy to make uniquely your own! Class fee: $70 ** Level: Beginner and up ** Saturday, April 11th, 9am – 5pm

THE FLOURISHED MONOGRAM

In this unique design workshop, we will first look at some famous monograms and what makes them so visually successful. Then as we develop our own designs (from simple to more complex) using step-by-step instructions, we will explore the “elasticity’ of letters, learning how to bend, modify, repeat, stretch, overlap and interlock lines to create well balanced, useful and visually beautiful monograms. From a pencil sketch to finished “inked” designs, and working with shapes such as

spirals, cameos, shields and diamonds, you will be guided through the interplay of patterns and textures as you develop and design your own images that are fit to be crowned in royalty!

Class fee: $85** Level: Intermediate. This is NOT a letterforms class. A basic knowledge of pointed pen calligraphy is necessary to fully benefit from this workshop. **Sunday, April 12th, 9am – 5pm

You are invited to join a small, intensive exploration in contemporary pointed pen work, facilitated by renowned penman, Kathy Milici. Please note that although you can join us for the full weekend, we are offering two distinctly different classes: a lettering class on Saturday which can accommodate all skill levels, and on Sunday an intermediate level class requiring some skilled calligraphic knowledge, as it will not cover lettering. This class offering has been prepared with the students in mind – a fun and innovative gathering of friends with a love for calligraphy and a desire to expand their palettes, set in the Glass Cabin at the beautiful Camp Loughridge in Tulsa, Ok. www.camploughridge.org

From Teresa’s Pen… Dear CGO Members,

Recently, it seems that Mother Nature provided some long needed inside days for practicing calligraphy and related arts. With several days of ice and snow, I’m sure members found the isolation beneficial for creating new works to share at the next meeting. However, Mother Nature also caused the February Secret Valentine reveal to be cancelled at the last minute. No fear, these lovelies will have their moment to shine at the March 23rd meeting. Don’t miss it!!

Fortunately, June Nessler and her crew have not missed a beat to present the ongoing Calligraphy Clinics. We thank Marj Miller for her Italic instruction in February, and to Victoria Hoke-Lane for her recent instruction of the Uncial alphabet. There is an eager, interested following for this successful program as two more alphabets will be introduced, Pointed Pen and Blackletter. Unfortunately, Pam Neumann won’t be able to teach the pointed pen, but June will fill in for that class in April. Lastly, I will be teaching the Blackletter clinic on May 7th, before the wrap-up for the summer. We’re so excited to have several of these students join CGO, and will look forward to seeing them at the regular meetings.

We were so sorry to hear about Pam Neumann’s struggle following a recent stroke. She is in rehab and looking forward to overcoming the challenges she has been encountering. And, we know we’ll have her back with us really soon.

CGO is so fortunate to have such talented people as members, with such a diverse list of talents. Please join us on Saturday, March 21st, 9:00 a.m. at Lynda Jolly’s home for a brainstorming session for the Southwest Calligraphy Conference that CGO will host next January. The SWCC 2016 event will bring together two members from nine calligraphy guilds from the Southwest region to share information about their guilds and workshops during this meeting. Even if you think you have nothing major to contribute (which isn’t true), I’m absolutely sure that there is some small chore that you can help with. We need you!! Let’s make the Tulsa event memorable for the participants attending in January 2016.

Again, I am looking forward to the BIG REVEAL of Secret Valentines—though late, not without heart—at the March meeting.

did you know that you can remove the tip and turn it around.  Yes you can!  Both ends are identical in shape.  I tried it and it works!!  It’s
