The Vermont RiverConservancy Protects Village
and Fishing on the DogThe Vermont River Conservancy and Joseph and Deborah
Zuaro of Northfield recently worked together to establish a RiverCorridor Easement on 87 acres of the Zuarorsquos farm land along theDog River thanks to a grant from the State of Vermont Agency ofNatural Resources Department of Environmental Conservation
This easement was completed in October 2014 and helps ensurethe conserved area will always be undeveloped active floodplain ndash improving water quality and fish habitat in the Dog River andreducing future flood risks to the downstream Village ofNorthfield
The river reach surrounding the Zuaro property has been exten-sively channelized and armored threating to cut the river off fromits natural floodplain and increasing flood risks to downstreamNorthfield Village The Agency of Natural Resources RiverScientists identified the Zuaro property as important for protectingthe Dog Riverrsquos natural floodplain and its ecological health -improving the vegetated buffer can help slow down floodingwaters shade and cool the river for macro-invertebrates and troutpopulations while also providing their natural habitat in the formof course woody debris A River Corridor Easement also protectsthe prime agricultural soils within the conserved area from beingconverted to a house site in the future ndash planning ahead for thehealth of our rivers and Villages
The Zuaro property is mostly productive hay fields borderingthe Dog River ndash a State renowned brown trout fishry A small sec-tion of the protected property supports a White Pine and Hemlock
forest The River Corridor Easement will increase the woodyvegetation buffering the river ensuring the Dog River is a wel-coming home for brown and rainbow trout and the anglers andrecreationalists who enjoy this river
The Vermont River Conservancy is a Montpelier-based non-profit that works to protect and preserve important land alongVermont waters such as waterfalls gorges swimming holes wet-lands river and lake shores and islands It has preserved more than60 sites around the state Information is available at wwwvermon-triverconservancyorg or by calling VRC at (802) 229-0820
Waterfowl BlindsMust Be Removed
Waterfowl hunters who did not remove their hunting blindsfrom the waters of the state earlier must do so before February 15on Lake Champlain or May 15 on inland waters according to a
reminder from the Vermont Fish amp Wildlife DepartmentState law requires removal of the blinds before these deadlines
in order to protect natural areas and to prevent boating accidentsafter the ice melts
ldquoRemoval of the blinds and any posts that may be below thesurface of the ice is important because of the danger they presentwhen boaters are on the water in the springrdquo said State GameWarden Colonel Jason Batchelder
Batchelder says wardens have recorded names and addresses ofblind owners and will follow up with inspections

Vermont Bear Hunters Had a Successful and Safe Season in 2014
Vermont Hunters Enjoy Successful Deer Season
Vermont Hunters Report No Hunting RelatedShootings in 2014
The Vermont Fish amp Wildlife Department sayspreliminary numbers show hunters took slightlymore deer in 2014 hunting seasons compared toan average of the previous three years reflectinga stable and healthy deer population in the state
Deer biologist Adam Murkowski said reportsfrom big game check stations indicate huntershad successful deer seasons in 2014 Hunterstook a total of 13590 deer in the state 3143during archery season 1652 during youth week-end 6140 in rifle season and 2655 in muzzle-loader season
ldquoCompared to the previous three-year aver-age harvest levels rose slightly during thearchery season were roughly the same for muz-zleloader season and slightly decreased duringthe youth and rifle seasonsrdquo said Murkowski
Each year the department operates biologicalcheck stations during deer hunting seasons to
gather information on the age sex field dressedweight antler characteristics and overall healthof Vermontrsquos deer herd Murkowski said biologi-cal data from 1097 deer examined during thetwo-day youth hunt and November rifle seasonwill be important in further assessing the status
of local deer herds throughout the stateAccording to Murkowski the primary goal of
Vermontrsquos deer management strategy is to keepVermontrsquos deer herd stable healthy and in bal-ance with available habitat ldquoMaintaining anappropriate number of deer on the landscapeensures Vermontrsquos deer and the habitats that sup-port them remain healthy and productiverdquo hesaid ldquoHealthy habitats and stable deer herds arebeneficial to the deer themselves important toVermontrsquos deer hunters and they are beneficialto the health of the land and other wildlife
ldquoUnder our current goal of maintaining ahealthy deer herd a stable harvest is a good indi-cator that we are meeting our managementobjectives set out in Vermontrsquos 10-year BigGame Plan Season totals in any given year maybe up or down from the previous year But thefact that fluctuations are small rather than major
boom and bust cycles is an indicator that man-agement strategies are workingrdquoThe 2014 report on deer hunting seasons with
final numbers will be on Vermont Fish ampWildlifersquos website (wwwvtfishandwildlifecom)by early February
For the second time in three years Vermonthunters had a perfectly safe record with nohunting-related shootings reported in VermontThis includes the November rifle deer seasonwhen the vast majority of the statersquos 70000 resi-dent and nonresident hunters are in the woods
ldquoVermontrsquos hunters should be very proudrdquosaid Christopher Saunders Hunter EducationManager ldquoThis continues the statersquos safe huntingexperience and marks the eighth year in the pastdecade that the state recorded five or fewerhunting-related shootings ndash a track record thatdefies a common misperception that hunting isdangerous
ldquoI canrsquot thank Vermontrsquos 350 volunteer huntereducation instructors enough for their hard workand dedication and Vermont hunters should be
applauded for their vigilance in the fieldrdquoMandatory hunter education in Vermont has
led to an 80 percent decline in the hunting injuryrate during the past three decades Prior to huntereducation becoming mandatory in 1975 the statesometimes recorded 20 to 30 hunting-relatedshootings per year In addition the growing useof hunter orange clothing even though not man-dated in Vermont has likely also helped drive the
rate downThe universally safe hunting experience also
reinforces the continued popularity of hunting inVermont which brings in more than $260 mil-lion annually to the state and leverages an addi-tional $325 million in federal funding for wild-life conservation efforts

Dylan Moore 14 of Rutland gotthis bear during the 2014 bearseason in Vermont
The Vermont Fish amp Wildlife Departmentreports that bear hunters in Vermont had a safe andsuccessful hunting season in 2014 Hunters took567 black bears during the 84 days of the two-partlsquoearly bear seasonrsquo and lsquolate bear seasonrsquo Therewere also no hunting-related shooting incidents
The final harvest was nearly identical to the2013 harvest with 10 additional bears being takenin 2014 This represents a harvest that is consistentwith the goal of stabilizing the bear population to
remain within 4500 to 6000 bears according toFish amp Wildlife Department bear biologist ForrestHammond
While 2014 bear harvest numbers nearlymatched 2013 numbers the timing of the harvestdiffered significantly Bear hunters were muchmore successful this year during the early days ofthe hunt with 263 bears taken in Septembernearly double last yearrsquos September harvest
Hammond cited a decline in available foods and early snowfallsin 2014 as being responsible for the change in the timing of theharvest
ldquoOur surveys of nut-producing mast trees such beech oak andhickory indicated that only acorns were plentiful among fall foodsources this yearrdquo said Hammond ldquoUnfortunately for the bearsoak trees are not widespread in Vermont occurring mostly in theConnecticut River Valley and the Taconic Range in southwesternVermont so many bears moved to these areas of the state in searchof foodrdquo
Hammond noted that the town of Rockinghamin the southern Connecticut River Valley which isnot normally recognized as having a large bearpopulation had the largest number of bears takenof any town in the state at 12 bears
ldquoBears also spent more time in Septembersearching for food in open cornfields makingthem more easily spotted by hunters and increas-ing the early season success raterdquo saidHammond
A total of 458 bears were harvested during theearly bear season while 109 were taken by huntersduring the late bear season which overlaps withthe November deer season November snowfallsmay have driven bears into dens earlier than usualthis year which may account for the lower harvestduring the late bear season when many hunters areout but the bears were not
Hammond also noted that participation in theearly bear season was higher than anticipated with 12390 hunterschoosing to purchase a $5 early season bear tag an increase ofnearly 2000 tags from the previous year
ldquoBetween an abundant population a long hunting season andthe potential of harvesting delicious and nutritious bear meatVermonters and visitors arebecoming increasingly interestedin hunting this big game animalrdquosaid Hammond

reminder from the Vermont Fish amp Wildlife DepartmentState law requires removal of the blinds before these deadlines
in order to protect natural areas and to prevent boating accidentsafter the ice melts
ldquoRemoval of the blinds and any posts that may be below thesurface of the ice is important because of the danger they presentwhen boaters are on the water in the springrdquo said State GameWarden Colonel Jason Batchelder
