They are inviting others victims or families about conflicts with the system & parole officer. They are speak - ing out to raise aware - ness of conse - quences of these conflicts. City: Little risk of flooding this season Based on current conditions, there is little risk of flooding this season, according to the City of Merritt. Even with a higher-than-average snow- pack through February, it was balanced by an unseasonably dry March and early April. Now, data indicates that the snow- pack in the Nicola Basin is 'average'. Half or more of Nicola Basin snow has already melted and is moving through the system. And with forecasts for little pre- cipitation over the next 10 days, the risk of freshet flooding is low. The gates at the Nicola Lake dam have been wide open since late February, draw- ing lake levels down to historic lows to al- low as much storage capacity as possible and to flow early melt through the City. The Nicola River is flowing through Merritt at approx. 15.0 cubic metres /sec- ond (cms). Of this 15cms, 10.5cms is coming from the Nicola Lake dam, and 4.5cms from Clapperton (Mill) Creek. The Provincial dam operator made a gate change Tuesday to reduce the flow from the lake to capture more of the melt- ing snowpack and ensure there is sufficient water to fill the lake. Unless there is a dras- tic change in weather, it is unlikely that Nicola River flows through Merritt will exceed 30cms this season. In contrast, peak flows in 2020 were about 57cms. City staff is in close contact with the Province and monitors all river & snow gauges each day, along with weather fore- casts. Should there be any change in con- ditions that impacts the outlook, they will inform residents as soon as possible. Thoughts from Outside the Box No society wants you to become wise The following is a transcription of approx. the first 4 minutes to the lecture, No Society Wants You to Become Wise, by Osho. “No society wants you to become wise. It is against the investment of all societies. If people are wise, they cannot be exploited. If they are intelligent, they cannot be subjugated; they cannot be forced in a mechanical life, to live like robots. They will assert, they will assert their individuality. They will have the fragrance of rebellion around them. They would like to live in freedom. Freedom comes with wisdom, in- trinsically—they are inseparable. And no society wants people to be free. The com- munist society, the fascist society, the capitalist society, the Hindu, the Mohammaden, the Christian, no society... would like people to use their own intelligence, because the moment they start using their own intelligence, they become dangerous. Danger- ous to the establishment; dangerous to the people who are in power; dangerous to the ‘haves’; dangerous to all kinds of oppression, exploitation, suppression; dangerous to the churches; dangerous to the states; dangerous to the nations. In fact, a wise man is a fire, alive, a flame. He would like rather to die than to be enslaved. Death will no matter him much, but he cannot sell his life to all kinds of stupidities, to all kinds of stupid people. He cannot serve them. Hence the societies, down the ages, have been supplying you with false knowing. That’s the very function of your schools, colleges, universities. They don’t serve you, remember, they serve the past, they serve the vest- ed interest…” Submitted by Mike Bhangu S.O.E. extended The state of emergency is extended through the end of the day on May 11. “So many British Columbians are doing their part, but there are too many who just aren’t getting the message,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “Every time someone thinks the pub- lic health orders don’t apply to them, or that they can bend the rules just this once, it sets us all back. We have orders in place to keep people safe and bring us through to the end of this pandemic. Now we have new travel restrictions in place, and people need to follow these orders – not just because we will enforce these orders, but because it’s the right thing to do.” Symphony partners with library The Kamloops Symphony is partnering with the Thompson-Nicola Regional Li- brary to make their virtual concerts avail- able to the community. Library patrons can access archived KSO performances through the library’s website at no cost. Access will be provided via the Li- brary’s new website, starting Tuesday, April 27. No logins or passwords will be required. The videos available to view will change over time, and will initially begin with Igor Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale, a theatrical parable of a soldier who is tricked into selling his soul to the dev- il for the promise of unlimited riches, which was presented in partnership with Western Canada Theatre. The Phantom of the Opera, the groundbreaking 1925 si- lent horror film paired with a dramatic new score created by Canadian compos- er Gabriel Thibaudeau. Songs & Dances, a vibrant concert experience of folk tunes and moving melodies featuring sweep- ing, lush music by Canadian composers along with stirring works by Hungarian composers. https://www.tnrl.ca/ Community Museum partially re-opening While the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives is closed for the time being due to Covid-19, they are now available to answer phone calls and emails from 9am-5pm, Tuesday to Saturday, about questions involving the history of Mer- ritt and the Nicola Valley.
