GARS & FEVR
The motto for the World Day of Remembrance of Road Traffic
Victims throughout the Decade of Action for Road Safety is:
From Global Remembrance to Global Action across the Decade
[Sub theme:….........................]
Let’s Make 2011-2020 a Decade to Remember!
An annual theme, based on the Global Plan for the Decade of
Action, is to be agreed mutually among the Global NGO
Alliance and UNRSC members.
ReminderReminder
Reflecting pillar 2 of the Global Plan for the Decade, this
year’s theme, agreed at the 17th UNRSC Meeting, is:
From Global Remembrance to Global Action across the Decade
‘Let’s have roads that are safe for all’
Let’s Make 2011-2020 a Decade to Remember!
• Observance of the World Day of Remembrance is a unique
opportunity for governments and NGOs to highlight their work
• It is a tool to foster national and international partnerships
• A common WDR theme promotes the goals of the Decade
• Celebration of the World Day of Remembrance is an activity of the
Global Plan for the Decade of Action
• Themes of the World Day of Remembrance during this decade are
connected with the Plan
• UNRSC partners are involved in choosing each year's theme

World Day events in 2012 World Day events in 2012
In Antalya last April, the 3rd Global NGO meeting set up a Road
Victims Work Group to help organize the World Day events.
In Istambul last September, FEVR’s assembly decided to
financially support the communication and production costs:
• To spread this year’s theme in an unified message
• To produce a common video and poster image
• To promote the Day through social media
• To direct events’ details to the World Day website
The World Day this year The World Day this year
•Uganda, Cameroon, Nigeria, Togo, South Africa
•All 20 FEVR member countries (where this common
Remembrance Day began to be observed 20 years ago!)

available to Alliance NGOs worldwide in various languages:

The video and poster were made available for free.
The video will be shown on national and regional TV
channels, on public screens and in various social media.
The poster is being printed and shared in various formats
(poster, banner, postcard, etc.).
The social media networks used by NGOs will also promote
and share the materials, through paid event adverts.
These materials were offered globally in 2012 (before then
Europe-wide) and now in 2013.
The costs have until now been supported exclusively by
FEVR; the Global Alliance has given help in relaying the
message to the world’s NGOS and in hosting the
downloadable materials.
Costs and Resources. Production of the video and poster
. Overall organization
. Communication and advertising
. Setting up of websites and social media networks
. Development of the Word Day website
FEVR contributed in excess of € 5.000 to the above this year
(National NGOs cover expenses of their own organization and
production actions)
This sharing model is highly advantageous
. Cuts production and organization prices
. Offers a unified message and design
. promotes collaboration and integration of NGOs under the
umbrella of the Global Alliance or the World Day of
Remembrance and extends their reach
But•Partners of the UNRSC are not involved, either actively
promoting the World Day and it’s activities or financing this
worldwide effort.
•Although organization and production times have been pushed
back to give NGOs time to work, a fully financed Action Plan with
strict timelines is still lacking.
•The yearly theme has only been decided in March this year.
•The World Day site requires funds for ongoing development,
improvements and technical maintenance.
Proposed Action Planto be approved by the UNRSC
•The Road Victim Working Group of the Alliance is the
coordinator between the Alliance board, FEVR (intellectual owner
of the World Day of Remembrance), WHO and financing patrons.
•Approval of the theme - every November meeting of the UNRSC.
•Communication is managed by the Alliance and FEVR - A
communications official will become necessary for worldwide
media.
•Advertising (media and social media) and production of
materials (video, poster, others) subject to international
tendering.
Costs to be financed
•Communications, advertising, media lobbying and
fundraising
•Production of publicity and advocacy materials to share
•Coordination of Global Initiatives
• Production and diffusion of materials
Minimum financing for ensuring sustainability: $15.000
The 2014 theme is to be based on Pillar 3 - Safer vehicles.
i.e. vehicles with improved vehicle safety and crash avoidance
technologies, with high levels of road user protection, harmonized
global standards, etc.
