NGO Committee on Ageing, GENEVA website: http://ageingcommitteegeneva.org email: [email protected] Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ageinggeneva and Twitter: @NgoAgeing Violence against older persons remains largely hidden. However, it is gaining recognition as an important barrier to the enjoyment of human rights by older persons. Older women and older persons with disabilities may be especially vulnerable to abuse by a range of perpetrators including intimate partner, family members, caregivers and institutions. This side event will discuss how the issue is covered - or not – by existing human rights mechanisms. It will showcase legal approaches in national contexts. As the 9 th session of the OEWG in July 2018 will discuss in focus issues of autonomy and independence and long term and palliative care, the event will focus on how different forms of violence, abuse and neglect have a direct impact on the denial of autonomy and a good standard of care. Opening words: HE Ambassador Carlos Foradori, Permanent Representative, Permanent Mission of Argentina Message from Rosa Kornfeld-Matte, Independent Expert on the rights of older persons Panelists: Marie Beaulieu, expert researcher from Sherbrooke University, Canada Dennis Bortey, President Alzheimer’s Disease Ghana Bridget Penhale, expert researcher, University of East Anglia, UK Jörg Rickenmann, Coordinator Alter Ego, Switzerland Moderator: Beatriz Balbin, Chief, Special Procedures Branch, OHCHR The panel will be followed by an interactive debate with the audience Closing words: HE Ambassador Tomaž Mencin, Deputy Permanent representative, Permanent Mission of the Republic of Slovenia Captioning, French-English interpretation and webcast will be available.
