To help address this need, the United Nations in 1985 declared the rst Monday in October as World Habitat Day, which this year falls on October 2. Habitat for HumanitySouth Africa participates in this international event because we know that adequate shelter is critical to improved opportunities, health and education.

Habitat for Humanity's tried and tested partnership approach helps families acquire decent homes as a hand up, not a handout. Since 1976, Habitat has helped more than 9.8 million people improve their living situations.

But there is much more to be done. If the trend continues, almost 40 percent of the world's population will live in substandard housing by 2030. We are inviting you to join us in changing the reality of inadequate housing. We urge you to engage your company and its employees in participating in the World Habitat Day Team Build Week in Mfuleni, Western Cape.

Habitat for Humanity South Africa alone cannot address the critical issue of inadequate housing. It will take the eorts of business and community leaders, governments, volunteers and other nonprots.

With your help, we can improve lives and communities — at home and around the globe.

30 OCT - 3 NOV

What would you do if you had no home?

Tonight, a family of ve will huddle under tattered blankets, which are the only thing between them and a dirt oor. A mother will say a prayer that no one sneaks into her shack through its open doorway. And a father will lie awake, hoping the roof will hold out one more month and wondering how he will aord allof the other repairs his house so desperately needs.

They are just a handful of the almost 1 in 4 people around the world living in inadequate housing. Without a safe place to live, they are less likely to behealthy, less likely to be educated, and less likely to be able to take advantage of employment opportunities that could pull them out of poverty.

The foundation is strong. Now it’s YOUR turn to build shelter on solid ground.

To help address this need, the United Nations in 1985 declared the rst Monday in October as World Habitat Day, which this year falls on October 2. Habitat for HumanitySouth Africa participates in this international event because we know that adequate shelter is critical to improved opportunities, health and education.

Habitat for Humanity South Africa alone cannot address the critical issue of inadequate housing. It will take the eorts of business and community leaders, governments, volunteers and other nonprots.

With your help, we can improve lives and communities — at home and around the globe.

The Community members are trained and skilled to assist in every aspect of the Build event from Crew Leaders, Parking Marshals, Block Leaders, Public Speakers, Community Guides and Builders. These skills translate into paid jobs for the local community members who are then empowered to be active in their own development.

Although Mfuleni is located only 30 kilometres from Cape Town, its residents face many challenges accessing the opportunity and prosperity of the urban centre. Despite these challenges, the community is mobilising for change. Mfuleni developed rapidly from an inow of new inhabitants from neighbouring townships in the 1990’s, and is now home to over 20 000 households. Despite signicant challenges, the community is eager to build a vibrant and thriving living space. Many of Mfuleni’s residents are elderly, disabled or economically vulnerable. Now they will nally be able to realise their dream of having a decent place to live.

Duration of Build?

This is a 5 day build week (Monday – Friday) where volunteers will be tasked with daily activities to complete a house. You will be assisted by a Habitat-trained Crew Leader who will liaise with your team and the builders on site giving guidance and direction while ensuring volunteers have adequate work. Crew Leaders act as Construction Supervisors ensuring the house is built according to specications. Our Build Events Coordinator will oversee the process. We partner with a construction company who provide a builder and bricklayer per house.

What will you be doing during the build week?

You will construct a home for a family who has never had a decentplace to live. Your team will help construct external and internal walls, mix cement, move blocks, smooth (bag) walls, clear site and lay bricks. We can only accommodate a total of 10 individuals per day per house due to health and safety regulations. Should your team be bigger than 10 we can spread you across two or more houses. You are welcome tobring dierent teams each day.

Habitat SA re-engages with the Mfuleni community with a more holistic approach. Communities identify their priorities and drive their development processforward, while Habitat SA capacitates and supports them in this journey.

blessed all involved.

The event itself is a way of bridging the divide between people. It is a deeply healing, transformational experience which leaves a lasting impact on all involved. Fellow South Africans regardless of race working alongside each other for the common good. It fosters a greater understanding of shelter, poverty and unemployment issues in community and builds relationships based not on pity but on a realistic view of the need for citizens to become more active in the solutions.

The Build event is the rst real touch point or entry point we have with individuals, the FACE of habitat and a very powerful introduction to our work. It is here that we can demonstrate through the community member’s testimonies during the week, the constant programmatic work that Habitat does in the projects (communities) which leads to their long-term sustainability.

The costs of our Build events cover the following:

• Homeowner education and leadership development training• Skills development and transfer– the training of community members to run the event e.g. crew leaders, block leaders, parking marshalls, caterers, security etc. The members are paid for their work which creates jobs that capacitate locals – see the Build event programme breakdown doc for more details• Project management, community facilitator and trainer fees • Costs relating to construction and materials wheelbarrows, trowels – also paying a percentage to the contractor• Hard hats and reector jackets for all volunteers • Safety and security – Risk management and medical assistance on site all week. (ER24)• Support sta to arrange the event logistics - pre, during and post event• Habitat sta to co-ordinate every aspect of the donor management from the time they show interest to the team arriving on site including MOU’s, nancial management, etc.• Professionally designed materials to advertise and market the events including branding and merchandise• Catering on the day• Hiring of a marquee, toilets and a generator• The excess money raised during these events goes towards Habitat’s ongoing programmatic work in the communities.

The Build event is only part of the story. What evolves after the event is the real miracle.

HOW ARE WE ACHIEVING THIS TOGETHER?

The Volunteer Build Programme is a vital catalyst for broader, long-term development of the families and communities we serve; uplifting families from shelter-poverty to stability andself-reliance.

Habitat for Humanity South Africa has spent many years fullling its mission to build homes, communities and hope. What starts as a shelter-related need which gets addressed by infrastructure development, ends up as so much more.

Habitat SA is approached by a community to assist with their shelter needs. A needs analysis or social scoping is done and a Community Action Plan (CAP) is produced which identies the most pressing shelter-related issues to be addressed. Habitat SA invites Corporates to get their employees involved in the solution by sending them to build homes, transfer skills or oer nancial support through payroll giving.

The Habitat Volunteer Build Event serves as a way of meeting the community’s need while giving corporate volunteer teams (made up of active citizens) a chance to experience a side of life in South Africa that many have never been exposed to before. It is a transformational, deeply healing experience that builds lasting bridges between people from dierent circumstances.
