ln 1969, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) initiated a pro-gramme on the eva1uation of the carcinogenic risk of chemica1s to humans invo1ving theproduction of critically eva1uated monographs on individua1 chemica1s. The programmewas subsequently expanded to include evaluations of carcinogenic risks associated withexposures to complex mixtures, life-sty1e factors and bio10gical agents, as weIl as thosein specific occupations.

The objective of the programme is to elaborate and publish in the form of mono-graphs critica1 reviews of data on carcinogenicity for agents to which humans are knownto be exposed and on specific exposure situations; to eva1uate these data in terms ofhuman risk with the help of international working groups of experts in chemical carcino-genesis and re1ated fields; and to indicate where additional research efforts are needed.
