St. John's Gospel gives the fullest description of events around the resurrection. He has a particularly keen eye for detail. It was very early in the morning and still dark: The time of day is significant. Throughout John’s Gospel we find this contrast between light and darkness. They have taken the Lord: finding an empty tomb was an important factor to prove the resurrection of Jesus to sceptic Jews who would easily dismiss accounts of appearances to the disciples as collective hysteria. We don’t know. Mary Magdalene is a key witness at the death and resurrection of the Lord, and St John, always respectful of women (compare the Samaritan woman at the well or Martha, sister of Lazarus) gives her a prominent part. The ‘Beloved Disciple': reacts slightly differently from the impulsive Peter who goes straight into the tomb: it is the Beloved Disciple who actually gets there first, and who first believes in the resurrection of Jesus. Peter bent down into the tomb: archaeolog-ical research shows that, at the time, a 3-foot tall entrance led into cave - like tombs. The linen cloths: John gives a very specific account of the position and state of the linen cloths. The carefully folded linens attest to the fact that the body has not been stolen or spirited away.

————————————— PARISH OFFICE

Bishop Nulty's Easter Message: Easter Sunday this year falls on April Fool’s Day. Days and dates are important to all of us and still we are conscious on Easter Sunday that we live somehow outside time, connected with people who have gone before us. The one who was born in a borrowed stable, who held his Last Supper in a borrowed upper room and who was buried in a borrowed grave, that borrowed grave is now empty, he has Risen! When April Fool’s Day and Easter Sunday coincide, it is good to determine just who is the fool, the One crucified but who rose from the dead or those who tortured Him and had Him crucified? Easter lasts much longer than one day, Easter is a way of life, Easter is a way of living. Blessings on all our priests, religious, permanent deacons and parishioners who keep the message of the Risen One alive in all our parishes. May the Risen Christ walk with you in your joys and your pains this Easter Day. + Denis
