A SpeciAl ThAnk You To our SponSorS: Ace, Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, intra-lock international, Medtronic, MiS, Misch international implant institute, osteogenics and preXion

On Thursday morning, February 10th, our sponsors held “standing room only” pre-symposium workshops. A total of seven workshops filled the 8:00 a.m. to noon period.

Dr. Daniel McEowen and PreXion presented a course on the benefits of 3D CBCT Imaging Systems; Dr. Nicolas Elian gave a workshop on the features of the SECURE™ Dental Implant System by ACE; Dr. Hom-Lay Wang’s “sell out” audience got valuable instructions on Extraction Socket Management for Daily Practice. This course also offered a hands-on exercise in the use of allograft and PTFE membrane for socket augmentation. The course was sponsored by Osteogenics; Dr. Carl Misch and the Misch International Implant Institute sponsored a half-day course on a treatment plan sequence to decrease the risk of biomechanical overload in implant placement; Dr. Dwayne Karateew’s course focused on Dentsply’s Ankylos Implant and the Tissue Care Concept: The Foundation of Hard and Soft Tissue Preservation and Esthetics; Dr. Joseph Choukroun gave a compelling course on PRF Membranes complete from the background, research and applications of PRF membranes followed by a hands-on workshop devoted to the actual production and handling of the PRF membranes. The course was sponsored by Intra-Lock International; and finally, Dr. Ziv Mazor presented a course on Current and Future Trends in Maxillary Sinus Augmentation. This course was sponsored by MIS.

Following these workshops, the General Session was called to order at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday and ran through Saturday.

AWARDS…AWARDS...AWARDS…The ICOI Winter Symposium offered a perfect backdrop for the awarding of several accolades. On Thursday from the Main Podium, Dr. Michael Pikos and the ICOI presented Awards of Excellence to Drs. Scott Ganz, Alan Mattia and Alan Rosenfeld for their contribu-tions as “pioneers in the field of CT Software Technology”.

On Thursday evening following the General Session, we held our cus-tomary Welcome Reception with the Exhibitors. Over 1,500 people gathered to reconnect with old colleagues, enjoy refreshments, visit our exhibition booths and witness and participate in the Table Clinic and Poster Presentation competi-tion. Over 60 participants took part and judging was a real challenge for our committee. Dr. Avi Schetritt, Chair for this competition, tallied the votes by the committee and awarded the following:

• 1st place: Dr. Cindy Nguyen (Philadelphia, PA)Title: Histological Comparison of Autogenous and Allogeneic Block Grafts for Anterior Maxilla Ridge Augmentation

• 2nd place: Drs. Mahtab Sadrameli and Mitra Sadrameli (Alton, IL) Title: Predictability of Implant Placement Using Cone Beam Technology

• 3rd place: Dr. Joseph Farag (Port Charlotte, FL) POSTER Title: Simple Method for Bone Graft Adaptation to Immediate Alveolar Socket Implant Placement

Dr. Ganz, Dr. Pikos and Dr. Rosenfeld with their Awards of Excellence. Not pictured is Dr. Alan Mattia who also was so honored.

The ADIA provided a compelling faculty for their 2 ½ day program. Attracting nearly 400 hygienists, assistants and front office staff members, the Auxiliary program began on Thursday afternoon with ancillary topics presented by Sonja Lauren, Patti Di Gangi and James Cowheard. On Friday, ADIA’s Executive Director Lynn Mortilla, introduced the digital advances of online credit distribution and the digital submission of attendee questions. The day’s speakers included Dr. Arthur Acker, Dr. Yvan Poitras, Audrée Beaudin, Dr. Dwayne Karateew, Teresa Duncan, Lynn Mortilla and Dr. Sharon Azavedo. Concluding the Auxiliary symposium on Saturday were full day certification programs as follows: Ann-Marie DePalma and Stacey Matsuda gave the Dental Hygiene Implant Certification Program (DHICP); Karen Young presented the Practice Management Implant Certification Program (PMICP); and Vavi Bohbot conducted the Dental Assisting Implant Certification Program (DAICP). Teresa Duncan and Michelle Kratt conducted the Implant Coordinator Training Program.

Congratulations to the new ADIA fellows: Vavi Bohbot, Michele Guiberson, Michelle Kratt, Stacy Matsuda, Kim Pajak, Misty Palmer, and Staci VanLoo.

The ADIA Awards Ceremony also highlighted the 2010 ADIA Ambassadors who work very hard between meetings fulfilling the ADIA Mission and Vision and honored the 2010 Educator of the Year, Teresa Duncan.

Following the presentations, awardees and their family/friends enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Then they went to “the tables” for some gambling!!

Given the outright success of this meeting and the interest in this venue, we are planning to return to Las Vegas and the Bellagio for our Winter Symposium in February 2013. MARK YOUR CALENDARS.

The ICOI co-hosted its first symposium with New York’s Columbia University, College of Dental Medicine, December 10-11, 2010 at Columbia Medical Center. Dr. Dennis Tarnow, newly appointed Director of Implant Education at Columbia College of Dental Medicine was the scientific chair for this symposium. He did not disappoint. With a powerful international list of invited speakers, this meeting was SOLD OUT!! The main lecture hall was filled and we had to telecast the meeting into an alternate hall in the Medical Center. Nearly 500 doctors attended Dr. Tarnow’s first implant symposium at Columbia. The exhibition space was filled to capacity with several companies on a waiting list.

The faculty included the following speakers: Drs. John Beumer, Lyndon Cooper, Sidney Eiseg, David Garber, Axel Kirsch, David Kohavi, Michael McGuire, Alan Meltzer, Neil Meredith, Peter Moy, Joerg Strub and Tiziano Testori.

Dean of Columbia Medical Center, Dr. Ira Lamster, opened the meeting with welcoming remarks, followed by Dr. Kenneth Judy, ICOI Co-Chair and Dr. Tarnow. As is his custom, Dr. Tarnow’s program allowed for several minutes of Q&A following each lecture which underscored the educational value of the program.

At the conclusion of the symposium on Saturday, December 11th, many doctors were awarded their ICOI advanced credentials . Receiving their ICOI Fellowships were the following:

A PAT On The BACk...Many ICOI members have shown their dedication to implant dentistry education in general and to the ICOI in particular. While we have several such individuals, below are four that we would like to thank at this time for “growing the ICOI”, by exposing their graduates to ICOI membership, meetings and advanced credentials.

Itemsof Interest

Dr. Carl E. Misch, founder of The Misch International Implant Institute located in Philadelphia Temple University, Orlando, San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto and Singapore, has actively recruited members and encouraged their participation in ICOI Fellowship and Diplomate credentials, as well as presented ADIA certification programs for over 25 years. Graduates of The Misch International Implant Institute are well represented.

Dr. Rick Ferguson, Director of Implant Educators, has expanded his courses to include Miami, Tampa, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. This extension has had a major impact on ICOI membership and Fellowship in those areas. At each location, Implant Educators supports an ADIA certification program for all team members.

Triangle Dental Institute, Durham, NC, was created by Dr. William Hunt in 2008. Since its founding, many graduates have joined the ICOI, the ADIA and become ICOI Fellows. He is committed to the ICOI and continues to encourage large groups of new members to attend ICOI symposia.

The Institut Canadien d’Implantologie located in Quebec and France, under the guidance of Dr. Yvan Poitras, has been a long standing supporter of ICOI, its meetings and Advanced Credentialed Commission. The Institut and its on-going study club activities have significantly increased ICOI international membership and the Canadian Society of Oral Implantology (CSOI), an affiliate society of the ICOI.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Osteogenics Biomedical, a leader in the development of innovative dental bone grafting products, introduces enCore™ Combination Allograft, the first particulate grafting product combining mineralized and demineralized bone in a single bottle.

By combining these two distinctly different allografts, the surgeon is able to employ the complementary benefits of space-maintaining mineralized bone with osteoinductive demineralized matrix to optimize the environment for the regeneration of vital bone.

Each lot of enCore™ Combination Allograft undergoes a post-sterilization in vivo test for verification of osteoinductive potential. Additionally, each lot is bio-assayed for a threshold of BMP-2 to ensure product consistency.

During the processing of enCore™, best practices in tissue safety are utilized, such as single donor sourcing, rigorous donor screening and testing, terminal sterilization, and processing according to both FDA and AATB guidelines.
