Invasion of Poland and Western Europe

• The Poles were defeated in September 1939.

• Germany invaded Norway and Denmark.• Germany planned to invade Holland and

Belgium.• Germany wanted to take over France to

attack Britain.• Germany planned to declare war on the

USSR in 1941.

Operation Barbarossa

• The Nazis left the Battle of Britain.• Hitler wanted to attack Russia.• Hitler’s attack was the greatest land-air attack.• Had 3 million troops, 3,500 tanks, and 1,500

aircraft.• After 1 year 3 millions Russian troops were

prisoners.• After one year 1 million Russian troops were

dead.

Operation Barbarossa

• Hitler took over Smolensk and Leningrad in July 1941.

• Kiev has fallen in September of 1941.

• Hitler was soon after Moscow.

• Russia was able to fight off the Germans in Moscow.

• Hitler was finally beaten in July 1943.

Japanese Aggression

• Japan had issues with the USSR over the border• In October 1941, Japan attacked Peal Harbor.• Japan damaged a lot of American Fleet.• Japan defeated Malaya, the Dutch East Indies.• of Port Moresby in May 1942. Defeated the

Philippines, Burma, and many South Pacific islands.

Japanese Aggression

• June 1942, Japan wanted to destroy the rest of the American fleet.

• Japan got attacked by the U.S. and Australia.• Lost in New Guinea and in the Solomons.• Japan tries to make war to costly for their

enemies.• Japan saw no reason to go into Europe when

Germany was controlling it.• Japans two problems were the U.S. and the

Soviet Union.

United States Enters

• July 26, 1941, President Roosevelt stopped all trade with Japan

• After Pearl Harbor President Roosevelt blamed the commanders in Hawaii.

• Four days after Pearl Harbor, Hitler declares war with U.S.

• America noticed that Britain needed some desperate help.

• America sent troops and munitions.• The first U.S. troops arrived in January 1942.

United States Enters

• The U.S did not actually attack an Axis till a year after.

• Britain and U.S made a plan.

• They planned to attack from North Africa.

• Once there, move up to France.

• The next target was Sicily.

• In late July 1943 they then decided to attack Italy.

Defeat of the Axis

• On April 30, 1945 Hitler committed suicide. • May 1, 1945, German forces in Italy

surrendered.• German forces in the Netherlands, Northwestern

Germany, and Denmark surrendered on May 4th.• On May 7th, the German High Command

surrendered all forces.• May 8th became V-E Day.• The U.S. then turned to finish off Japan.
