Looking for the right words

English is a language full of expressions which are a must to know for every diligent student of WorldCenter. These are collocations which will testify
that you really mastered this language and think as Native Speakers do. So, let’s get an insight into some of them.
Number one is fall from grace – to stop being liked by people in authority: He fell from grace for the first time when he was convicted of drink-driving.
(впасть в немилость)
The second candidate is dance to smb’s tune – to do smth that someone wants you to do (used to show disapproval): At that time, Eastern bloc
countries danced to the Soviet’s tune. (Танцевать под чью-то дудку)
Cross my heart - used to say that you promise that you will do something,
or that what you are saying is true. (Честное слово)
By trial and error – if you do something by trial and error, you test many different methods of doing smth in order to find the best: I learned most
that I know about gardening through trial and error. (Методом прoб и ошибок)
Come rain or shine – whatever happens you promise to do it: I will come to
the meeting come rain or shine. (Что бы не случилось)
Inferiority complex – continuous feeling that you are much less important,
clever than other people. (Комплекс неполноценности)
Overstay your welcome – when you are staying longer than expected
(Засиживаться в гостях)
Something can be in the balance – when you cannot yet know whether the results will be bad or good: Meanwhile, the fate of the refugees continues to
hang in the balance. (В подвешеном состоянии)
And finally you can be the master of your own destiny – to be in charge of
your life. (Хозяин доли)
Remember to forget!?
How to remember these nasty words? This is perhaps a question that has been vexing an army of students for centuries? So, WorldCenter Team has decided to come up with a number of remedies to assist our students in this language struggle.
Way N.1
You can draw associations
with familiar words or
objects. For instance, the
word hijack can be
visualized in the following
way: You are waving hello
to a guy called Jack.
Way N.2 This method I personally favour.
It is called Colourcoding. It is as
if you are making a traffic light
out of your notes. Mark all the
words you know green, „so-so‟
words are coloured yellow and all
unknown words will become red.
Then, whenever remembering
these words pay special attention
to red ones and give a cursory
look to green! This system can
work miracles!
Way N.3 Make a story or a poem out of the
words. The time you spent on
creating and looking for the right
context for the words will ensure
that you will remember them. At
least some of them!

and You
Last Saturday (on the 9th
of October) when it was raining cats and
dogs outside, 10 of us gathered in the WorldCenter for challenging a
break-new experience, playing an eminent game – MAFIA.
The fee for play was only 30 hrns, so right after registration
students started playing in one of the cozy rooms of our Multi-lingual
school. In order to perfect our timing the host laid a sweet table with the
black British tea. The whole night was at our disposal and we started to
play.
The rules of the game were not sophisticated in fact so everyone
easily caught a drift overnight.
In short each set of Mafia is made up of alternate «nights» and
«days». Every gamer grabs a card which determines whether the person
is Citizen, Sheriff, Mafia or Don. During the first night Mafia decides
who will be killed in the foreseeable future. Sheriff is looking for Don
to reveal the truth and Don is hunting for Sheriff. The main goal of each
team is to stay alive at any cost and win the game.
When the day approaches all citizens wake up and make their
suggestions about probable criminals. Everyone is given 1 minute to
express his\her thoughts about previously happened events. Some people
make conclusions based on explicit evidences or just rely on their own
inner feelings. The mutual suspicions and accusations are taking place
at this moment.
Last Saturday Tamara who is a tangibly logic-minded person took
a lead of the game. She quickly started her own investigation and put to a
great strain on allegedly suspected people. But being perceptive one can
turn into a dismal failure and trigger rather decisive actions of Mafia
against real threat. While criminals gradually had been killing innocent
citizens the rest of the players kept an eye on possible Mafiosi
desperately trying to catch a guilty sight or other provocative signs.
Thus in a cloud of deception Mafia plays its natural role killing as many
citizens as possible and evading the prison. The live example was
Margarita whose game was recognized as the best one. She successfully
had been playing her game as a Don but at the end she was under the
suspicion. Being on the verge of exposure Margo went to the last
resort and played Va-Bank.
Unfortunately or fortunately … this is a dubious question - but she
was sent to the prison despite going to the great length to persuade
others in her innocence.
Apparently to succeed in this game and uncover the truth you need
logic and keenness of observation. So boost your mind and end up the
best player of the game dubbed MAFIA. Be sure you will not spend your
time in vain.
Right now jump at the wonderful opportunity of being a member of
Mafia Club.

On September 26th
15
activists including me took
part in Team Challenge
“Spider‟s Web” conducted
by the WorldCenter Fun
Club. We all suddenly
became a save-the-world
team, whose aim was to get
the cure for disease that
afflicted the world.
I’d thought that we were
going to search the remedy,
but no… We knew where it
was from the early beginning.
It was behind the spider’s
web! To get it, we all had to
go through the web (one
person per hole) in 1 hour.
At first it seemed
impossible. The web was too
high, the holes were too
narrow and what’s more we
were not allowed to touch the
threads. If we did one person
had to come back and go
through his/her hole again.
However we were not
discouraged by that, it
spurred us to join our forces
and develop an efficient
strategy.
That’s unbelievable but in
an hour we became a
cohesive team ready for
challenges and able to bend
over backwards to achieve the
goals. It’s hard to describe
emotions, but they are
extremely positive. So it’s
better to try once than to hear
a hundred times.

They say that there is no limit to creativity and I more than
agree. Students of WorldCenter became a living example of that.
Intermediate group was offered a task to finish definitions of the
following concepts: Love, life, art, dogs and music. „A piece of
cake‟ you may say. You wish! They had to use words from the
topic about FASHION. Enjoy the results!
Ann Fedorets and Mary Sidenko
Love is a feeling when two people are obsessed with each
other.
Life is a violent fight among people to have the best place
under the sun.
Dogs are entertaining animals which belong to lively people.
Art is an entertaining but quite serious thing, a proof that we
need to live better.
Music is an activity which is created not for party poopers
but for party animals.
Tamara, Dennis and Valery
Love is a loose feeling that forces people to stand out in a
crowd.
Life is not always striped. We don’t have black and white
stripes on our way. Life is very patterned.
Art is self-expression in different ways like photo or
sculpture, sometimes it is awful and clumsy, but you are sure to have
satisfaction.
Dogs are reliable animals in a miserable violent world.
Music is an outstanding achievement of our time that helps to
loosen up.
Ira Golub and Marina Bykova
Love is a feeling when you have a lot in common with your
partner and together you are able to overcome any difficulty.
Life is a stunning thing. Create it yourself.
Art is a fascinating thing that helps people to come across as
an individual creator.
Libra
Got a few hours? Ask a Libra if
he would like chocolate or
vanilla ice cream. He'll consider.
He likes chocolate, alright, but if
he had vanilla he could put hot
fudge on top and have the best
of both. But that would be twice
as bad for him (and Libras,
known for their sweet tooth,
have to watch that paunch).
Then again, just chocolate is
boring, although not as boring as
plain old vanilla...
Better yet, don't ask a Libra if he
wants chocolate or vanilla ice
cream. Tell him which kind to
have.
Libras just can't make up their
minds. It comes from their need
to see justice done and their
ability to see both sides of every
issue. They think everything
through so thoroughly it's a
wonder they ever get out of the
house in the moving. Should
they wear the blue shirt or the
red? Loafers or boots? You get
the picture.
Libras are the natural judges of
the Zodiac. They are fair to all
people at all costs. Injustice of
any sort (whether to themselves
or others) offends them greatly.
Libra is ruled by Venus, the
Goddess of Love. If you are
blessed with a Libran lover, look
to the heavens and thank her for
this gentle, affectionate creature.
Libras are sentimental and
romantic. They bring you red
roses when you're feeling blue
and serve you breakfast in bed.
Libras love to be in love. It's
what they live for. Once in a
while they start petty little
arguments. They only do it to
make sure you still love them.

I regularly visit ‘WorldCenter’ and once they organized an open-air class in the forest a couple of weeks ago. It
was a very sunny day. There were fifteen people and only 7 of them could understand Russian: four teachers and
me, two other students. Foreign students were diverse: 2 Japanese, 2 Greek, several English and one American.
We were speaking only English and our communication was extremely important for successful completion of the
task. We were dealing with team challenge all together as if we have known each other for a very long time. If we
were not sporty people, we wouldn’t have overcome all difficulties. I will definitely remember this event as
fascinating and challenging.
