From The PrincipalKaya all and welcome to ‘In Touch’ for August 2021. It was fantastic to see so many families at our Teacher Interviews held in Week 2. More than 187 families were in attendance, and more than 900 appointments were held to discuss student progress based on Semester 1 reports. It was greatly appreciated to see so much support from both families and staff towards the improved achievement of our students. This week, staff have been examining the data from Semester 1 and using this to evaluate and plan for improved delivery and course options for 2022. As a staffing body, we have collected and critiqued a mountain of whole school data, and the conclusions we have drawn from the results have given our staff so much to learn and reflect upon. I am looking forward to developing future directions and envisioning how this is going to marry into the new Business Plan. We have had a first glimpse at our NAPLAN results from Term 2, for Years 7 and 9, and although we are still waiting for a comparison to our ‘like schools’, the data is already very encouraging. We have seen an increase in the number of students achieving Band 8, 9 and 10 and prequalifying for the literacy and numeracy component of their upcoming WACE. Well done to the students and the staff in preparing for NAPLAN 2021. Currently, we are working on the planning for Round 2 OLNA assessments for Years 10 – 12 and if we can achieve anything close to the fantastic results in NAPLAN, we can all be very happy and proud of our students’ efforts. The Literacy and Numeracy

Committee have just finished updating staff on the new priorities, which we are sure will further the gains we have already made in this area. Our Student Council is currently recruiting for 2022 and elections for Head President and other executive roles within this leadership group are underway. I’m very much looking forward to listening to speeches in the near future and the upcoming election. We celebrated NAIDOC week, including NAIDOC Assembly last week. What can I say? It was another fantastic celebration of Aboriginal culture and achievement. My thanks to those families who came to observe the Assembly and those that came on Friday to watch the Netball and Football games. I have had some fantastic feedback from special guests at the Assembly about the terrific new initiatives, especially the recognition of Aboriginal achievement, leadership and commitment to education shown by our students. The MC’s Djai and Tyson were great representatives of the Aboriginal student body, and we are very proud of our students, for the positive way that they attended and acknowledged those who received certificates, the presenters and performers. Both the Netball and AFL games were run in great spirit, and it was a super way to finish off what was an awesome week of celebration. Many thanks must be given to the NAIDOC Committee for their organisation of the week, and also to the input of our newly appointed Cultural Liaison Coordinator, Isobel Bevis, who is a very welcome addition to our staff.

In other cultural news, we would like to welcome the Nan’s on a Mission, continuing the cultural education of our Maori and Pacific Islander students through the MAPI program. We need to acknowledge and thank Tina Tuira-Waldon, who has been a tireless supporter of this program for a number of years, but with employment opportunities presented to her, we have had to bid her farewell. Thankfully, the Nan’s have stepped in to support our students and continue Tina’s great work. We are very grateful for this support from the community, and hopefully this will be the start of a lot more work in establishing our links with families, in not only MAPI culture, but potentially in other cultural groups within the school community. I would also like to welcome Jason Kelly back to the fold. Jason is a former Gilmore College student who graduated in 2020, and has re-joined us in this new capacity, as an Aboriginal Islander Education Officer (AIEO). He will be working alongside our longstanding and valued staff member, Vanessa Garlett, in his new role. It is great to see you back Jason, and we are already seeing the positives from having you at the College. Don’t forget Week 7 is Roll to School week. We encourage students to walk, use the bus, or ride to school during this week, and there are fantastic raffle prizes to be awarded at the end of the week to celebrate and recognise this contribution to a sustainable Australia. Raffle tickets will be given out at our main gates and C block gates in the morning, and rewards are also available at the end of the day as the students leave. Advertising posters will be displayed around the school, and we encourage all students to take note and participate. Please be aware; riding to school also comes with responsibilities. Students are not to ride bikes or scooters within the school grounds and must be considerate of others. We would like to give a big shout out to James Langeard, who will be representing Gilmore College in the upcoming World Skills Competition. He will be up against some tough competition, both from within Western Australia and interstate. We have a fantastic record in this competition, and James has some historic shoes to fill. However, the word on the street is that he is well and truly prepared. While we expect great things from him, and he does need to know we are already proud of the fact that he is one of the two Western Australian students chosen to represent WA in the Metals Engineering component of this competition. Good luck James! We’re all behind you. Lastly, if you haven’t already bought a ticket for Matilda Jr our whole school production, I do believe there may be tickets still available through the TryBooking website. It’s going to be an awesome musical!

WorldSkills 2021 GO JAMES GO!!!

Our very own James Langeard will be representing Western Australia in the Metals and Engineering category at the WorldSkills Competition to be held from August 26-28 at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Team WA consists of 85 members from WA TAFEs as well as 23 Year 12 students. The competition gives regional winners from across the nation an opportunity to put their talent to the test against competitors from across Australia.

James has been training hard with the help of Mr Guest, during the school holidays and Tuesday evenings. James was recently invited to

Parliament House, where he was presented with his Team WA uniform by Hon. Sue Ellery.

We would like to wish James all the best in the competition. You are already a winner in our eyes!

We would also like to thank Mr Guest for giving up his time to impart his knowledge and expertise to ensure James is fully prepared for competition.

Our Year 12 Process Plant Operator students participated in what has become an annual safety training session at ERGT Jandakot. This training is fully funded by ERGT and puts our students in a good position to better understand the importance of safety in the Oil and Gas industry. Students are awarded certificates that can be used on their resumes to indicate they have specific safety training that would make them suitable candidates to be hired in apprenticeships with a variety of Oil and Gas Companies.

Once again we would like to thank the staff at ERGT for always welcoming us and providing this amazing training. Special mention to Tim the Trainer, who always delivers interactive and informative training with a touch of humour. A HUGE thank you!!

Book SwapOur school community now has access to more reading resources thanks to the amazing efforts of Miss Tammy, who has set up a Gilmore College Book Swap.Students can visit the new Book Swap station to either drop off books that they have read and swap them for ones that they haven’t, or they can take a book to read and return it when they have finished. The Book Swap is in the library and all students and staff are welcome to visit.Thank you Miss Tammy for your great initiative and donation of books to get the Gilmore College Book Swap started. “I believe that every student

should have a book in their bag, or next to their bed to

read,” Miss Tammy.

The Keyhole Garden is situated out the back of the May O’Brien building and has been in the works for the past 2 years. The idea was former Humanities and Social Sciences Teacher, Miss Elsegood. It took this long to make because we had to collect enough of the bricks which are made from 1.25 L soft drink bottles, stuffed with soft plastic.

I began to build the garden at the beginning of 2021, however I was 50 bricks short, and we had to begin collecting again. On this Winter break, I snuck into school to complete the job just before it rained and in time for our TuckerBush garden incursion that is coming up in Week 5. I extend a huge thank you to Miss Elsegood, Miss Chipper, the entire

Recycling is the KeyI am so very pleased to announce the completion of another awesome Gilmore College Sustainability Committee project.

Sustainability Committee, Gilmore College staff, families, students, and community members for contributing your ideas, support and most importantly, bricks. Of course, I also thank the students who helped me build: Jason Cakebread, Rocky Loo, Seraphine Jacobs-Bolton, Haylene Winmar and Larissa Mitchell.

Well done Gilmore College. We saved all that plastic from ending up in the ocean for at least 200 years and in the process, have created an interesting space to grow bush tucker.

Miss Lesley Brown - Sustainability Committee

On behalf of the Sustainability Committee, we would like to acknowledge Miss Brown’s commitment, enthusiasm and tireless efforts over the past few years, towards the many projects that we now have in the school. Thank you.

Original damper made by Aboriginal people is best cooked in the ashes of a fire. The Nyoongar women would go out and collect acacia seeds, they would grind the seeds with a round stone that fitted neatly into their hands and mix the flour with water. The flat stones called ‘mullers’ would be smooth by grinding. (Retrieved from: https://www.noongarculture.org.au/food)

Year 9 Home Economics students learnt to cook Wattleseed damper. In order for students to experience Wattleseed damper, Ms Glanville introduced the recipe this year. Wattleseed are the edible seeds from any of 120 species of Australian Acacia that were traditionally used as food by Aboriginal people. Wattleseed has a nice nutty, earthy flavour with a milder tone.Students really enjoyed cooking and tasting it.

We have been learning about density this Term in Science. Density is how heavy something is for its size. To explore this concept, we did a density practical.

Using liquids with different densities (honey, water, dishwashing liquid, baby oil, and distilled water), the students made amazing

looking density columns.

Harry Perkins Institute of Medical ResearchOn Wednesday 4 August Year 12 ATAR Human Biology students travelled to Nedlands, grabbed a coffee at Dome, some breaky at Jesters and lunch supplies at the Hampden Road Continental Deli, then headed to the Harry Perkins building to participate in a workshop that formed part of our assessment schedule for Unit 4.We joined up with boys from Aquinas College and got challenged on our knowledge of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and other biotechnological processes.

We did very well – we answered more questions than the AC boys and were winners

against them in the PCR game. It was noted by many how well Gilmore College students conducted themselves with their level of maturity.

The laboratory experience was amazing – we used high-tech equipment in order to copy patients’ DNA samples and were able to identify those samples that had a melanoma mutation. We heard about the journey different researchers had taken before working at Harry Perkins and were inspired by the wonderful, ground-breaking work that is being done in various fields of medicine, right here in Western Australia. We headed home after a quick group picture in front of the wall of red blood cells, filled with excitement and wonder. The day has definitely been a highlight and memories made.

Western Australia Volleyball Junior LeagueFrom the beginning of May until last Friday, Gilmore College has had five teams participating in the WA Volleyball Junior League every Friday night. The five teams are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Boys’ teams, and the 1st, and 8/9 Honours Girls’ teams. All five teams have performed exceedingly well throughout the tournament, with three of the five competing in semi- and grand-finals to finish in the top four teams in their pools. The 2nd Boys team performed particularly well, earning themselves silver medals. While both the 1st Boys and Girls teams lost in the semi-finals to the eventual gold medallists in their pools, to come 3rd and 4th overall respectively.A special mention to the students for whom this was their first time competing in such a tournament, and also to their five coaches who gave up 3 hours of their Friday nights every week for the competition: Craig Davies, Adam Hammond, Ryan Gonsalves, Jason Gonsalves, and Sue Agnete. As coaches, we are extremely pleased with the results and effort these students have put in, and we look forward to the Volleyball WA Schools’ Cup tournaments that are starting this week (Friday Week 5, Thursday-Saturday, Week 6).

All the teams have represented the College admirably on and off the court,

in both their skill and sportsmanship, and should be very proud of their

achievements this year.

Heal Country - NAIDOC 2021

NAIDOC Week HighlightsPainting: Over 100 students and staff took part in creating a large canvas that will be hung in the breeze way and used in our future Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The Art piece represents our natural environment in Kwinana e.g. koomal/possum, bindi bindi/butterfly and bilya/the Spectacles. It also shows the many different people who must live and move peacefully and respectfully within the city, with each other and the environment. The canvas shows that healing Country and healing people is the same thing. Thank you to Sal’s Aboriginal Art.

Mulka: The story of Mulka has been passed down through generations and was presented to Year 7s and 8s in the theatre by Ash and Kelly Collard. The story of Mulka tells learners not to wander too far off from the safety of their family while they are young and to make sure that they fall in love with the right person. Mulka’s cave is in Hyden, near Wave Rock.

Badge Making: As a new addition to our NAIDOC Week celebrations, students were invited to make their own Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander designed badge. Students who made badges also learned about the Free the Flag campaign and were shocked to learn that a non-Aboriginal clothing company owns the rights to the Aboriginal flag.

Page 13: WorldSkills 2021

Music: This year we also tried a new initiative of playing music by First nations Artists during some recess and lunch breaks. Artists included Flewnt, Briggs, Archie Roach, Thelma Plum, Jessica Mauboy and Yabu Band. Students were seen dancing in the playground and some teachers downloaded some deadly new tunes!Netball: The annual teachers vs students netball match.Kangaroo stew and Damper: Again this year, students were lucky enough to taste some Yonga stew and damper. The ones who missed out were hopping mad!Assembly performances and NAIDOC Awards: Every year we look forward to the heart stopping performances of our young yorga and maaman dancers and yet again, they did not let us down, showing us Yonga, Waitch and Lost Boys dances as well as some women’s business accompanied with stirring music. The audience also enjoyed a guitar performance and singing by Indigo Ellis. Another first this year was our new NAIDOC Awards that recognise First Nations students who have excelled in areas of Academia, Sport and Leadership. Congratulations to the many students who were recognised. This year, senior students who study Aboriginal and Intercultural Studies

delivered an acknowledgment of Country in Noongar language. We hope to continue this from now on at NAIDOC assemblies but with students creating their own personal acknowledgements.Football: The annual teachers vs students football match was epic! The teachers might have trained this year because they kept up with a very fit and agile student team, some of whom are already playing in the WAFL Colts! Sadly for the students, the teachers won but I am sure they pulled up a lot worse for wear than the young lads. Huge shout out to Ashleigh Reidy who was the only female player on the field and having been tackled by Ash in the past, I felt for the opposition. Mr Mason kicked an amazing goal and got a couple of marks and, Jacob Pasli was best on ground. Rotary cooked up some snags, families came down to cheer on the players and everyone had an awesome Friday period 5 watching the footy in Djilba.

The NAIDOC Committee extends a huge thank you to every single staff, student, family member and external service, who helped to facilitate and support this week of celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations people. We can’t wait to come back bigger and better next year!
