FOCUS ON WORSHIP ADVENT WREATH: A wreath of four candles, used during the weeks of Advent. The Advent wreath,
which probably originated among early Lutherans in Germany, is a symbol of waiting and watchfulness
during the weeks of Advent. The Advent wreath is customarily placed near the Gospel side of the altar
(the left side as the congregation faces the alter). It is removed from the church at the conclusion of Advent,
prior to the Christmas celebration.
CHRISTMAS: The word “Christmas” is Old English for “The Mass of Christ.” Christmas is the celebration
of the Nativity of Our Lord, when the Word became flesh (John 1:14) through the birth of Jesus the Christ.
The celebration of the birth of Christ is preceded by the Advent season, a four-week period of preparation
for the Nativity of the Lord. In contrast to the subdued and austere mood of Advent, Christmas is
characterized by grateful praise and festive joy.
CHRISTMAS SEASON: The 12 day period celebrating the Incarnation of Christ begins December 24
(Christmas Eve) and ends on January 5 (the eve of the Epiphany of Our Lord). Christmas adornments
and decorations remain in place and Christmas hymns and carols are sung throughout this season. The
appointed color for this season is white.

Pastor Fred’s
Christmas Message
Contradiction
Every Christmas Eve we hear again the birth of Jesus according to the Gospel of Luke.
Every year we hear its simplicity, its sense of poverty, its proclamation that God
becomes human in a scene that is a far away from the way we celebrate it today.
Throughout the centuries Christians remember this historic moment in so many ways.
Indeed, the puritans of Plymouth plantations banned the celebration and even arrested
those who secretly celebrated Jesus' birth.
It was in England the our current celebration of Christmas took root; wassail songs,
family gatherings, feasting and the inclusion of Santa Claus. All of this was imported
into our country and wherever our influence came to bear throughout the world, our
traditions soon followed. How else can we explain the fulsome celebration of
Christmas in Japan where fewer than two percent of the people are christian?
Retailers reveled in one of the most profitable black Fridays this year with online
purchases starting to overtake mall shopping sprees which is reflected in the closing
of so many stores in the past few years. A recent article in the Thrivent magazine
reveals that 56 percent of people are stressed financially from over spending during
the Christmas season which made it difficult to enjoy the holiday.
I admit to being fully part of this contemporary celebration. But somehow every year
I get this nagging sensation that my idea of Christmas is a contradiction to God's idea
of Christmas. Somehow the recent TV ad that shows a $60,0000 automobile wrapped
with a giant red ribbon is not quite what God has in mind in celebrating Jesus' birth.
And so the story goes: Mary riding on a donkey, no room at the inn, a stable birth and
swaddling clothes along with the suggestion that you might want to keep some of those
fancy ribbons and bows on this year's Christmas presents, save some money and use
them again next year.
Wishing you a thoughtful Advent and a Blessed Christmas.

And the angel said unto them, "Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all
people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this
shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
Luke 2: 10-12
May the wonder of that first Christmas, the joy of God's abundant blessings,
and the peace of Jesus' presence be with you always.
With our best wishes for a joyful and Christ-centered Christmas and new year,
Tammy Rich Jo
The Angel Tree Collection for Manor Care residents
Please help us spread some Christmas cheer this year!
Each year, St. Luke partners with a local nursing home, to help give their residents gifts to lift their spirits during the Christmas season. This year we are again giving to Manor Care on Hilliard Ave. Please help us keep this time honored tradition alive with your love and generosity. To participate, please pick up an Angel from the Angel Tree located in the Narthex. Each Angel has information about items needed for one resident of Manor Care. Buy and wrap the presents requested. Then return and place your gifts underneath the Angel Tree by Sunday, December 17th. We wish to thank everyone that participates every year and thank you to our new gifters. Please contact Dana Wiggins at 475-0077 if you have any questions or if you lose your angel. Thank you for participating again this year!

Dear St. Luke Lutheran Church Members,
As we enter our Advent Journey towards Christmas - Christ's Birth,
God's gift to all of us, it is our custom to present a cash gift to our
dedicated Church Staff - The Rev. Fred Marcoux, (Pastor), Tammy
Hammond (Church Administrator), Rich Barnett (Director of Music),
Jo Blandford (Christian Education & Youth Consultant), Vickie Pyle (Nursery
Attendant) and Naim Abdelshahid (Custodian). This is one small way to show our
appreciation for the ministry and services they provide to each of us individually and
as a Church Family.
Please consider placing a check or envelope marked "Staff Christmas Gift" in the of-
fering plate over the next several Sundays so we can present the staff with a well-
deserved Gift from ALL OF US. You can designate the gift to one or more of the staff
members. Gifts that are not designated will be divided equally. Thank you.
Together in Christ,

Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the
Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are
used to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God
and those who attend worship services.
Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of
God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor
of” a special person, an anniversary, birthday,
birth, baptism or other special event. More than
one person may find a certain date important so flowers may be
given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday
service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly
from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered
to the church. The flowers are yours to take home after the service
that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or
homebound members. Please sign up on the flower chart located in
the fellowship hall.
Please contact the church office or Jean Stewart if you have any
questions. Thank you.
Did you pick up your 3rd Quarter Giving Statement?
Giving Statements are put out on the Narthex table
at the beginning of the month after a quarter ends.
Your third quarter statements are available for several
weeks. If you didn’t get yours, please see Ludi Webber.
Would you like to be part of our Worship Service?
Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Assisting Ministers, Crucifers and Ushers. We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services, Altar Bread Bakers, Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members, Musicians and many other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy.
If you are interested in serving and would like more information about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship Ministry, we would love to hear from you.
Please contact Pastor Fred or Vince Reedinger for more information. You’ll be glad you did!
Do you have something for the Newsletter?
The Jan. 2018 Newsletter Deadline is Dec. 20th. Please call in or e-mail in your submissions with your all of your September meeting dates and notices to Tammy in the church office as soon as possible. Thanks! 804-272-0486, [email protected]
2018 Flower Calendar
The 2018 Flower Calendar is now up in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so ? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. If you would like more information about our Flower Calendar or if you have any questions about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the church office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

On the First Day of Advent...
A special ADVENT LUNCH & PROGRAM
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3rd from 11:20 AM to 12:40 PM.
In many years the first Sunday in Advent falls on Thanksgiving weekend and gets pushed to the side as
we celebrate a national holiday weekend with family and friends. BUT, that’s not happening this year.
This year, the first day of Advent falls one week later and has it’s own day—free and clear.
We are taking the opportunity to really WELCOME the season of ADVENT by having
a special ADVENT TREE in the Fellowship Hall. When we are finished we will
have a wonderful tree that tells the story of ADVENT to all who use our church
during the entire month of DECEMBER.
The ADVENT LUNCH & PROGRAM is for all ages —from babies to oldsters! We
have LUNCH for EVERYONE—and it’s FREE! Join us for Hot Dogs, homemade
Mac & Cheese, and ’smores Brownies!
Opportunities abound to help decorate our tree and take a “souvenir ORNAMENT ” home for your
own tree. There will be a special area for the little ones to play dress up with Christmas costumes, and
a special ornament of their child for Mom & Dad to keep and cherish through the years. We have a won-
derful story to tell—Martin and the Christmas Tree—a storybook tale of the Tannenbaum. Sit
back and enjoy some joyful, joyful songs with Rich Barnett. You’ll be all tuned up if you’re planning
to continue on to caroling at the nursing home after the program.
The program ends by 12:40 PM so you have the rest of the day for your
Christmas preparations and busy schedule.
Come celebrate the First Day of ADVENT with your St. Luke family.
Sunday, December 3rd, 11:20 AM—12:40 PM.
It’s a FREE gift of the season!
