Our church council is constitutionally responsible
for many areas of congregational life. These include,
but are not limited to: general oversight of
congregational life and activities, in particular its
worship life; responsibility for financial and
property matters; responsibility for constitutional,
membership, and employment matters; and the
transaction of business not limited to the
congregation as a whole.
Worship Conversations
Messiah’s Worship Committee is planning a
conversation process for February and March. This
process allows all congregational members the
opportunity to hear one another’s thoughts and
share their hopes for Sunday mornings at Messiah.
The conversations will create feedback in
conversation, through reflection and writing, on
Sticky Notes, and through Facebook and email. The
process entails six steps:
A High Level Conversation centered around the
following question: What would a Sunday
morning look like at which you 1) would be
vitally engaged and 2) would be excited to bring
a relative, friend, or neighbor?
A Mid-Level Conversation that focuses on
some of the programmatic pieces of Sunday
morning, such as worship and music, fellowship,
faith formation, and the opportunity for service.
A “Down-in-the-Weeds” Conversation with
folks who make the practical aspects of worship
happen.
A Reflection Sermon on what is being spoken
and what is being heard, followed by further
member and friend responses via reflection
and writing, Sticky Notes, Facebook, and email.
A Written Proposal by the Worship Team to the
church council on how Messiah should move
forward.
Action by the council and implementation
following Easter.
The Worship Team seeks to foster a healthy and
wide-ranging conversation around the upcoming
move to two Sunday morning services. Watch for
specific times and dates for the above steps in the
worship conversation process.

Holy Communion
All are welcome to the Lord’s table, and this always
includes children! We believe that the Risen Christ
comes to us in, with, and under the bread and wine
of Holy Communion with gifts of forgiveness, life,
and salvation for all.
Please indicate your intention to receive bread and
wine with open hands. Folded hands signifies that
you choose to receive a blessing rather than bread
and wine. Gluten free wafers are also available.
We practice communion by intinction—the dipping
of bread into either the larger chalice of wine or, for
those who prefer, the smaller chalice of grape juice.
The offering plates located in the side aisles are
used to fund our Food Bank, Community Meal and
other community needs. Please give generously to
these to support these programs.
In the name of the Risen Christ, welcome to the
Lord’s Table.
Congregational Verse:
“And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.”
Micah 6:8b
Guiding Vision:
We are an inclusive community
following Jesus, worshiping God,
striving side by side, and mending the
broken places in all creation.
Embrace Committee
Embrace – create a culture where everyone feels
welcome-
We are excited about the work we do and cherish
the community we share through life’s ups and
downs. We want to share this community with new
people, and we want to change and grow with their
presence. We commit ourselves to engage with
people outside our community, as well as people
within Messiah. We will create a welcoming culture
and ensure that each person receives the message:
There is a place for you here!
Messiah Weekly February 9-16, 2020
Welcome
Welcome to Messiah Lutheran Church. We invite
you to be our companion on a journey of faith. As we
share our stories, learn to pray, practice hearing
scripture together, and consider God’s call to
service, we do so anticipating we will be changed. In
the midst of these unsettling and yet hopeful times,
we go forth with the Holden Prayer of Good Courage
on our lips:
O God, you have called your servants to ventures of
which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet
untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to
go out with good courage, not knowing where we go,
but only that your hand is leading us and your love
supporting us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Electronic Giving Cards
This week in the pew card holders, you will see new
green giving cards. If you give your offering through
Simply Giving, online banking or other electronic
formats please use these cards each week to signify
your offering. The placement of this card in the
offering plate is a way of participating in this act of
worship. If you would like to sign up for electronic
giving, please contact Lynne in the church office.

February 9th/16th: Emmanuel documentary and
discussion
Join us for a viewing of Emanuel, the 2019
documentary about the shooting at Mother Emanuel
Church in Charleston, South Carolina. The film
powerfully weaves the history of race relations in
Charleston, the significance and impact of Mother
Emanuel Church, and the hope that somehow
emerges in the aftermath. The documentary will be
split between two weeks with discussion led by
Andrew Monsen.
February 23rd: 5th/6th Graders teach on
Homelessness
Each spring the 5th/6th grade Sunday School class
shifts from following the traditional Sunday School
curriculum to beginning work on issues of social
justice. This year the students have chosen to focus
on homelessness as they work to support two local
organizations (NEXUS Youth and Families and Vine
Maple Place) who work to address homelessness in
our community. Join us February 23rd as our 5th/6th
graders share with us what they are learning so that
all ages can be engaged in the work.
Rummage Sale
Carolyn Towner is stepping away from leadership of
our congregation’s annual rummage sale. We want
to thank Carolyn for her thoughtful leadership and
for shepherding this ministry to the community.
This creates an opportunity for a new leader to step
forward and become the new shepherd of the
rummage sale. Those interested in exploring this
leadership opportunity can talk with Carolyn about
what it entails. Her cell is (253) 217-0494.
In order to hold a rummage sale this coming July, a
new leader will need to be identified and planning
begin by March 1, 2020. If this ministry and
leadership opportunity sounds like a calling for you,
please let Carolyn or the church office know by
March 1.

need you! On Sunday March 15th at 12pm we will
be holding a VBS planning meeting to discuss how
we can make VBS happen this summer for our

Savannah Phelan.
