I am a pink leprechaun! That is an easy thing to say in today’s culture. Because, today, I can say about anything I want, so long as I get to define what “pink” is and what a “leprechaun” is.
Defining your own words is a common practice. Have you ever said, “That’s not what I meant!” This
problem is due to a conflict of definitions.
I’d like to talk about a definition that the church uses…hospitality. I have been in a lot of churches. We all know how important hospitality is to those who are new visitors and guests on a
Sunday morning. Before we ever get to the music, sermon or worship most people have already
decided if they will be back. The service has not even started and their decision has already been
made.
I have never heard a church say, “We are not very hospitable.” Every church thinks they are a friendly church! So, why have I been in so many unhospitable churches? It’s in the definition!
“Hospitality is more than fellowship with one another. It’s about opening our hearts to others and
building relationships.” (Shift, Maynard)
Cindy and I attended one of the coldest friendly churches I have ever experienced. There were greeters at the door, ushers passing out bulletins at the sanctuary door, coffee and homemade baked goods waiting to be eaten. There was even one of those fellowship times in the middle of the service, where everyone tried to shake as many hands as they could in three minutes. Add all that together and there was about 10 seconds of personal contact. We brought a guest with us one time and no one even spoke to her. If you scratched through the skin of their hospitality it would not even
bleed.
Biblical hospitality is all about genuinely welcoming the stranger. Here are some ideas that could take us a little deeper into the relational pool. Look for new people. You may meet a lot of members and regular attenders that way, but you are improving your relational skills and increasing
the possibility of congregational care. When you find a new person:
1) Sit with them during the service.
2) Take a connection card and help them fill it out: name,
address and email, phone, kids.
3) Get to know them a bit.
4) Introduce them to some of the church staff (pastors after the service).
5) Get them a visitor gift bag.
6) Offer them coffee and a donut.
7) Invite them to lunch at your home or a restaurant.
We were at a motel for a training event recently. Motels are in the hospitality business. We were greeted warmly. Check-in was pleasant and included conversation, more than the license plate
of our car. They offered us warm chocolate chip cookies, offered to help us with baggage. And
probably the most noticeable point was that for the four days we were there every staff member spoke
to us every time they saw us.
Intentional Biblical hospitality is about building relationships. It helps the visitor answer the
question, “Do I fit here?” Relationships will also will help us to reach our community. By building
relationships with new people, we come to understand what baggage they just
walked through the door with.
Lord, help us be a relational/ hospitable congregation that reaches to the
core.
Blessings,
Rev. Ric Harvel
July 2017 Prayer List
When we join the United Methodist Church, we take a vow that we will be, loyal to the United Methodist Church and uphold it by Our Prayers, Our Presence, Our Gifts, Our
Service and by Our Witness. Scriptures call us to celebrate with those who celebrate and to grieve with those who
grieve. We grow in connection with one another as we know the praises and concerns of the individual churches and
respond in a manner of praise and/or prayer. Please feel free to share your news that we may share especially the prayer
concerns to the faith community.

Please remember that we fill shoeboxes in November. Summer is a great time to stock up on
goodies for the boxes. Sometimes yard or garage sales are a great place to find shoebox items.
You can also sew, crochet, or knit something for a box as well.
A complete list of possible items is found on top of the red Operation Christmas Child bin in the
Gathering Space. Boys and girls from the ages of 2-14 can receive a box. Please help a boy or girl this summer.
Thanks in advance - Mission/Outreach Committee
The Pymatuning Area Community Food Pantry
Our pantry, the Pymatuning Area Community Food Pantry, seeks to make sure our neighbors have enough food for their families. We are open from 10AM to noon on the second Friday of each month. We serve folks who qualify and live in the Pymatuning Velley School District. We can also give out emergency food one time for those who may come in and don’t live in our district.
About 35-40% of the food given out is from donations to our pantry. Our community is very generous in providing us with canned and boxed goods. We also receive money donations, large and small. The rest of the food comes from Country Neighbor’s office in Orwell. The original source of this food is the Cleveland Foodbank. It provides food for six counties around the Cleveland area. Ashtabula County is one of them. Each county served by the Cleveland Foodbank has a local office and pickup point. The local office for Ashtabula County is Country Neighbor. The Country Neighbor office issues a list of what food, and a few non-food items, are available at any given time. The food varies because what is available at the Cleveland Foodbank varies. All of the pantries in Ashtabula County order food from Country Neighbor. It, in turn, gets its food for distribution from the Cleveland Foodbank. Some of the food is from local stores whose labels you would recognize. Other food is from state or federal government programs. Some of the food is free to us while other items we pay for. We can purchase food from Country Neighbor much more cheaply than you could buy it anywhere else. This is what we do with the money donated to our pantry. That is why money donations, as well as food donations, are so important to us. We also receive purchase credit to buy food from Country Neighbor through the Harvest for Hunger Program. We are very grateful that Pastor Hockran arranges the food pickup for us from Country Neighbor. It is very important to us as well. As you can see, there’s a lot that happens to make our pantry successful.
We have a very dedicated staff of folks who order food from Country Neighbor, unload and shelve the food in our pantry rooms, keep the pantry rooms organized, and give food out on pantry day. We have folks who will carry patrons’ boxes up the stairs and put them into patrons’ cars. Some pantries pre-bag all of their food and folks just pick up the bags or boxes. We feel it is important to give folks some freedom to pick what they would like to eat. The Cleveland Foodbank issues amounts of food to be given out to various sizes of families for these categories: dairy, fruit, vegetables, cereals and bread, and protein. We give one starch item, like macaroni, spaghetti, Raman noodles, regular noodles, mashed potatoes, etc., for each member of the family. Our other food distribution, the Cleveland Foodbank, is held on the 4th Friday of each month. It gives out fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and bread and bakery.
Our pantry also always has emergency food boxes available in the office for folks who are out of food. We give out several boxes a week.
Thank you so much for your generous contributions to our pantry. We couldn’t exist without you, Country Neighbor, or the
Cleveland Foodbank. Our pantry fed 2,457 people in 2016. Please continue your faithful support of this program. With
God’s help we’ll continue to serve our Pymatuning community.
Thank you,
Sandy John for the Pantry Staff

Movies bring us stories and time away from the craziness of things. We may see the friendship and perseverance of 2 dogs and a cat in the wild, courage of a
bunny rabbit to make a difference in her city, or even your science teacher turn-ing into a tornado and your friend has a shark fin on their back, a racing taxi
through the Nevada desert, the hills coming alive with the Sound of Music, or knowing that God's Not Dead. It's memories with friends and family. I remember camping out on the living room floor with my mom and watching movies all after-noon. That's how I discovered Anne of Green Gables. If we didn't take the time out our crazy schedule of school, work, sports, etc., just to be together I might have missed it. Movie night is held the 2nd Sunday of every month and I
would love to have you join us. Movie starts at 5pm and we will have some movie snacks and drinks.

NEWSLETTER INFO UPDATE: All information for the newsletter should be emailed or provided to CHURCH OFFICE
by the 25th of each month. Send to [email protected]
Well, summer if officially here. All current school years have concluded. Graduations have occurred with pleasant memories for all! And now…..July is the time to enjoy a time of renewing and refreshing of the “soul” as we savor the sunshine and warmth of the season. I would like to take this time to share with you some Life Lessons that I’ve learned and have proven so true. Life Lessons are often difficult to learn, but sometimes we can learn from what others have been through. Take a moment to reflect on these valuable learned lessons! I’ve learned that the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person. I’ve learned that when you’re in love, it shows. I’ve learned that just one person saying to me, “You’ve made my day!” makes my day. I’ve learned that having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world. I’ve learned that being kind is more important than being right. I’ve learned that you should NEVER say “no” to a gift from a child. I’ve learned that I can always pray for someone when I don’t have the strength to help in some other way. I’ve learned that sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand. I’ve learned that it’s those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular. This past week was filled with great joy as I watched children filled with excitement and joy at Bible School. Their young minds are like sponges and I envy them for the speed with which they learn! I watched teachers accept gifts from the children…..a handmade brownie presented to our leader, hugs abundant for the pre-school teachers almost landing them on the ground! I saw the joy of a young girl as she shared a selfie that her teacher had tak-en of the two of them! And each of the adults received these gifts with enthusiasm and joy! Thank you to each of the Bible School staff for sharing the Life Lessons that you have invaluably learned already. ******************* Stress Fighting One-Liners It’s summer so will keep it “light”! Here are a few one-liners to carry with you as you combat stress in your day. Remember to experience them to the fullest and share them with one other person this week. We do not remember days, but moments. Life moves too fast, so enjoy your precious moments. Nothing is real to you until you experience it, otherwise it is just hearsay. It’s all right to sit on your pity pit every now and again. Just be sure to flush when you are done. Surviving and living your life successfully requires courage. The goals and dreams you’re seeking require courage and risk-taking. Learn from the turtle---it only makes progress when it sticks out its neck. Have a wonderful summer everyone!!
