Editor’s Note Stacy Streuli

As I write to you at the end of May, it seems that our lovely Swiss summer is nowhere in sight! After spending a gorgeous two weeks on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands, I was all tanned and prepared to come back to Badi weather! But no such luck! Well, fingers crossed for June!!

And since we had such a lovely (and HOT) BBQ last year, here’s hoping for a repeat this year. All the details for the BBQ are in this issue! Coming up at the WAC there is also a kids movie night (take 2), a Ladies Night Out: Mexican, The WAC Book Group... so many fun things to do in June.

If you haven’t already been berry-picking in Switzerland, I would highly recommend it for this summer. Jucker Farm is a classic choice, but you’ll find many roadside fields to visit as well. There is even excellent blueberry picking on the main road between Gutenswil and Fehraltorf. Just look for the big yellow banner they hang when the fruit is ready to pluck.

One of my all-time favorite cakes to make during strawberry season is a simple sponge cake which showcases the ripe fruit perfectly. I’ve included the recipe in this issue.

And lastly, this will be my final issue as the editor of the WAC on Track. It has been a fun and rewarding year, and I am looking forward to seeing what Carol Conzelmann has up her sleeve as our next editor. :-)

With best regards,Stacy Streuli

June is a big sporting month for me this year, as my husband and I are busily gearing up to take part in a triathlon (a swim-bike-run race.) For me, I’m taking on the challenge of the Switzerland Ironman 70.3, taking place in Rapperswil on Sunday 2nd June

(http://ironmanrapperswil.com), and then we’re heading off to Turkey for my husband to compete in the Sprint Distance European Championships (he’s fast!)

For us to be training, working and looking after the children, the last few months have been a time of clever scheduling, compromise and hard work! We’re both looking forward to this paying off when we are able to take part in our events, each to the best of our ability. For me, that means making it to the finish line that I’ve been picturing since last October – I’ll let you know if I do!

With the summer sun upon us, now is a great time to take up a sporty challenge; dust off the bike for a cycle round the lake, go rollerblading with the kids or just take a walk or jog in the evening sun. It’s hard not to enjoy yourself in the surroundings we are lucky enough to have on our doorstep here in Switzerland.

If you’re looking for a goal to get you exercising, how about signing up for the Greifenseelauf (5K, 10K, or half-marathon) (http://www.ryffelrunning.ch/de/internationalergreifenseelauf) or the Pfäffikerseelauf (http://www.zuerilaufcup.ch/zkb-zuerilaufcup/pfaeffikersee-lauf), a 12km run, in September?

All our sporting antics do mean that sadly we’ll be missing the WAC’s Summer BBQ on June 22nd. I’ll be thinking of you all having a fantastic time playing games, climbing in the woods, munching sausages and enjoying the desserts!

Have a wonderful time and a great month,Sue

Enrollment is now going on!

If you haven’t enrolled your child yet, please do so as our classes are filling up and we have a ‘first come, first served’ policy.

This school year we are adding a Friday morning Spielgruppe WACkelöhrli which will take place in the clubroom and activities room.

The other classes and Lunch Club will run as scheduled.

We are aware that the Swiss School system may present some scheduling problems. If you do have a problem, please let us know and as we have done in the past, we will help you to find a solution. It may not always be possible but we do try our best. We are here for you!

Not only are we here for you but there are a lot of parents who are here for us too! We have had so many people volunteering and helping us from small things to big things! The teachers and I appreciate every effort and would like to thank everyone. First of all, we thank the parents for your support in every way that it is given. In addition, we would sincerely like to thank Kristina for leading the PTA and all our class reps. Kristina is stepping down and if anyone is interested in running the PTA next school year or being a part of the group, please let us know. For some of our bigger projects, we would like to thank Karin for the playdough, Susan for the bulletin boards, Luc for the bulletin boards and all the other ‘manly’ jobs, Irina for the pictures, Sue, Pam and Heike for helping with the sandbox. I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone. We are all aware of the valuable support we have from each and every one of you.

Some of you will be leaving us already this month. We wish you all the best and hope to see you again soon. I sincerely hope we all have a nice summer (as soon as possible)!

The WAC would like to hold a 'FIRST AID FOR BABIES & CHILDREN'

course in the new term.

The course would cover:

• Dealing with an emergency• Unconsciousness (breathing and not breathing)

• Choking• Bleeding, CPR• Burns & scalds and many other important areas.

At the moment the course would cost 150.- chf per person, which is for a full day course (may be able to be split into two half days) with a

full qualification at the end.

We would love to know how much interest there is out there to attend this course, as once we have numbers we can see if we can find a way

to lower the costs and be able to look at a suitable time to hold it.

Courses will be held at the WAC, and unfortunately child care will not be offered at this time, but we hope to be able to find suitable

course times to fit as many people as possible.

Please contact [email protected] for further information and to register your interest.

Uster  Vacation  Programme  (Ferienplausch)

The  excitement  is  building!  But  be  warned,  this  is  an  adrenaline  rush…  With  the  summer  holidays  galloping  towards  us,  it’s  time  set  your  alarm  clocks  (or  stay  up  very  late)  to  book  your  child’s  holiday  adventures  in  the  Uster  area.

The  Uster  Ferienplausch  is  just  around  the  corner.  Every  summer  the  city  of  Uster  offers  a  super,  fantastic,  adventure-‐filled  vacation  programme  for  kids  3  years  old  and  up,  at  very  reasonable  prices,

e.g.  horse  riding,  baking,  going  to  a  magic  show,  feeding  the  elephants  at  the  zoo,  visiting  the  fire  station,  scuba  diving  trial  lessons  etc.

At  midnight  Tuesday  5th  June,  all  classes  can  be  booked  online  at  www.ferienplausch-‐uster.ch.  Unfortunately  the  courses  only  come  online  a  couple  of  days  beforehand,  so  it  really  doesn’t  allow  much  time  to  browse  through  and  decide  what  you/your  kids  fancy.

From  experience,  the  really  “cool”  courses  in  fact  do  fill  up  in  the  first  20-‐30  minutes!  Yes,  that  is  totally  crazy  -‐  I  think  half  of  Uster,  and  the  surrounding  towns,  especially  stay  up  late  that  evening  to  book  courses  for  their  kids.  So  be  warned  that  at  midnight,  when  they  open  the  lines  to  allow  bookings,  you  need  to  be  armed  and  prepared,  wide-‐awake,  alert  and  ready  to  go,  go,  go.  You  may  want  to  have  a  sleeping  tablet  ready  for  afterwards.  Last  year  I  was  on  such  an  adrenaline  high,  I  couldn’t  fall  asleep  for  2  or  3  hours  afterwards.  My  nerves  were  just  tingling….!  But  it  is  fun  and  addictive!  Honestly!

Of  course,  those  who  think  this  also  all  a  lot  of  hype,  and  can’t  be  bothered  with  the  madness,  (and  I  frankly  can’t  blame  you)  you  will  indeed  still  find  courses  with  open  slots  for  interesting  classes,  but  it  may  be  for  things  that  would  not  necessarily  be  your  first  choice;  that’s  something  you  will  have  to  take  into  consideration  yourself.

Have  fun,  and  hopefully  see  many  WAC  kids,  or  their  parents,  at  some  of  the  Ferienplausch  courses  this  summer.

Elephant Stream and BuchholZ Playground

This is a lovely half day excursion, combining a woodland walk, water play, the excitement of a life-sized concrete elephant which older kids can clamber over or sit on the trunk which spouts out water, lots of picnic/grilling places and a great adventure playground. The walk is along easy woodland trails, but there are steps so it’s not pushchair friendly. The walk is great even for small children from 4 plus (or younger if you want to carry them!)

The playground has a section for older kids, swings, table tennis, a huge sandpit and toddlers play area, plus a water pump and pond where kids hunt for tadpoles in the spring. There are toilets and a covered area for picnics plus several grill places.

Directions: by car: drive through Witikon on the main Witikonerstrasse downhill towards Zürich. Once you reach the forest, the road makes a sharp left curve; in the curve take a turning right which leads to a small free parking place.

Closest bus stop: Zürich Schlyfi

Walking directions: from the parking place, walk into the forest following the yellow diamonds/arrows. You’ll reach the Elephant in 20 minutes; walk on another 30 minutes, crossing several bridges. After one bridge you’ll see wooden steps heading up the hill to the right; this is the way to the Buchholz playground. You’ll need to go the same way back, but at least it all downhill!

You will see: women are weak, but mothers are strong.”Julie Otsuka The Buddha in the Attic

In May the Readers Gone WACky read The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka. Members enjoyed this short lyrical novel about the Japanese picture brides who travelled to San Francisco in the early 1900’s for arranged marriages. Full of hope, they arrived to find out that the future husbands portrayed in the photographs were not the handsome professional men they had dreamed of, but older laborers. The book follows the women’s lives in a collective first person meditation, often more like poetry than prose. The stories include their journey, from wedding night to raising children, to the outbreak of WWII when entire Japanese communities were relocated to desolate internment camps.

The readers were very interested in this little known piece of history, and discussed their knowledge and opinions of the Japanese internment. Although the situation of the Japanese in the U.S. during this time was difficult, the book on the whole was not sad. The last chapter, written in the voice of the local white community, gave the potentially bitter story a tone of compassion and forgiveness.

After discussing the book’s original structure, members shared their most memorable “images” of the many women and events described. Readers also speculated on the meaning of the title and discussed the themes of forgiveness, shame and guilt in the book.

In conclusion, the Readers Gone WACky were pleased with this unconventional and historically important narrative.

Our next meeting is scheduled for:

June 19 Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel

Meetings are held on Wednesday evenings at 8 PM at the WAC. New readers are very welcome! Please call or email Alice Knoepfel for more information (044 912 2326 [email protected])

This month Girls Club divided in two with one group earning their Friendship Badge and the other their Community Service Badge. Many thanks to Carolyn and Monique for leading the group at the WAC.  There, the girls were able to decorate their new official Girls Club t-shirts while getting to know each other better. Chocolate dipped pretzel and paper dolls went along with our theme of unity and building strong bonds of friendship. The girls worked hard on learning each others names. Adding beads to the bottom of their shirts was loads of fun, as the girls demonstrated their ability to concentrate and really manipulate their fine motor skills.

The other half of the girls met at the Asylum Center in Volketswil as we joined with the Red Cross in creating an afternoon of fun and adventure for the children in the program currently seeking refuge. We first learned how all of the children come from areas of war or extreme poverty. At the center each family is given a single bedroom, three families per apartment. Many of our girls hated the idea of having to share a room with their sibling and couldn’t imagine doing so with their whole family. We spent the afternoon making dough creations, hiking to the woods, doing a nature scavenger hunt, playing ball games, and blowing bubbles all while making some new friends. Besides the items that families donated the Girls Club also made sure that each child that participated with us received a picture of themselves at the event.  Clothing, toys, even homes can be replaced but the pictures of your ever growing and changing child can not. I hope that all the girls that were able to take part received a small glimpse of the idea that

not all children have it easy and the importance of lending a hand and a smile whenever possible.

Should anyone have any gently used clothing or toys that they wish to donate the Asylum center gladly accepts donations 24-7 at this address:AOZ Durchgangszentrum HegnauKindhauserstrasse 35 - 8604 Volketswil - Telefon 044 997 13 65The office is located in the center corner of the L-shaped building.

BEHIND THE SCENES…

Pamela, our fantastic Interior/Exterior Chairperson, has been as busy as ever behind the scenes at the WAC. All those little jobs that you may never have thought about, like fixing the lights or planting the flowers, are done by Pam.

Here’s a rare photo of her recently caught in action doing another great job – preparing our new sandbox and playhouse to be used by the school and playgroups. Huge thanks also to Bettina and Loredana (the Wackelöhrli teachers) for building it. We hope you all agree that this will make a great addition to our little garden.

Thank you, Pamela, for all your hard work!

Goodbye...Sadly, we say goodbye to a member of the WAC

family this month, as Angie Menendez and her family leave Switzerland and head off for a new adventure in

the United States. Angie helped run the Rockin’ Rascals Playgroup, was a member of the WAC Board as director of Marketing, designed a new logo for the WAC, made many, many trips to IKEA and helped in

so many ways at the WAC. Her little boy Santiago brought lots of smiles to us all, and we’ve loved seeing

her newest addition Siena light up the room. Angie, you will always be a treasured member of the WAC Family and I hope you will pop in and see us if you

visit CH!

Playgroup Newsby Annie Forster

Playgroup has had some fun in April crafting, singing and an outdoor meet up at Jucker Farm! For those who are not aware, Jucker Farm is lovely car-free farm in Seegraeben which has beautiful views of the Pfaeffikon Lake, a walk-in goat enclosure, playground, hammocks, and hay barn straw paradise for the kids. We're all looking forward to berry season where you can pick-your-own. Please refer to www.juckerfarm.ch/ ‎ for more information.

We've been making binoculars out of toilet paper rolls (yes, hoarding toilet rolls does pay off :), caterpillars on leaves and sun catchers. Sun catchers are a great and easy craft for toddlers with no messy glue!

Stained Glass Sun CatcherMaterials needed:Construction paper Clear contact paperTissue paper in different colours Scissors Create a boarder on the piece of construction paper. You may wish to draw a shape for example, circle, butterfly, fish etc and then cut out the middle to create a boarder. Cut a piece of contact paper the same size. Remove the backing from the contact paper and lay the construction paper frame on the sticky side-up on a flat surface.

Cut various colours of tissue paper into small pieces. Ask your child to randomly stick the pieces of tissue paper onto the sticky side of the contact paper.

Place it on the window, sticky side against the window and watch it catch the sun!Alternatively, you can cover it with another piece of contact paper and trim around the edges and add a loop to hang.

Enjoy!Best wishes,Annie

Around the WAC...

Attendees of May's “Ladies Night In” 'hit it out of the ballpark' as the saying goes. The American themed feast kicked off with quesadillas, veggies paired with authentic onion dip, and loaded potato skins. Main courses included comfort foods such as burgers, hot dogs, chili accompanied by corn bread muffins, sweet potato fries and baked macaroni casserole with a lovely cheddar cheese. The evening's meal was capped off by traditional cupcakes, NY style cheesecake, and key lime pie. Food was not the only highlight of the evening as we were treated to an impromptu advanced cake decorating session by Mirijam. It was an enjoyable night where recipes were exchanged, where to find American products were

discovered and new acquaintances made. We hope you'll join us for July's GNI which will have a Swiss theme - details to follow.

Great seeing you last night and until next time.
