    MAIN INFORMATION

    • Principle:

    ObjectiveinthisprojectistodevelopandimplementafullyfunctionalinnovativemediumandlowvoltagedistributiongridinAmsterdamNieuwWestarea.Thisincludesadvancedfaultdetectiontechnology,bidirectionalenergyflowfacilitation,anddemandresponsefeatus.Thiswillbeademonstrationgridforinnovativeelectricityproductionandconsumptionservices.WithintheCity-zenprogramme,anumberofspecifictechnologydemonstratorsaredefined:•Todemonstratethefeasibilityofdecentralizedelectricitystoragesystemsincombinationwithphoto-voltaicinstallations;•TotestthebenefitsofVehicletogrid(V2G)applicationsandtechnologyontheAmsterdam(NieuwWest)smartgrid.Thisisdoneonthegridthatservesabout10,000ofhouseholdsmakingitthelargestintelligentgridinTheNetherlands.Specificfocusisonenablingthedeliveryofsmartserviceswithanattractivebusinesscase.

    Insightin(near)real-timepowerflowsandvoltageprofilemakesitpossiblefortheDSOtoactquickerandmoreproactiveregardingcustomerserviceandfacilitation.Furthermore,thisinsightenablesustodevelopcapabilitieswhichwillenabletheDSOtooperatethegridmorecloselytoitslimitsinasafeandreliableway.MonitoringlocaltrendsanddevelopmentsenablestheDSOtoplangridinvestmentsbetterandmoreefficiently.Partofthisinvolvesthecollectionofassetconditiondataforcondition-basedmaintenance.Furthermore,thisinsightisneededforthedevelopmentoffuturesmartenergy/customerservices.

    TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC VIABILITY

    Themore(household)datathecitizensintheareaarewillingtoshare,thebroaderarethepossibilitiesforoptimalgridmonitoring, control and analysis. For the DSO the grid and meter data is available, but the energy usage within thehouseholdbydiffentappliancesisamoreblindspot.Again,Thebasicassumptionisthatinsightonallgridlevelswillbeachievedwithnetworkmodelling/stateestimationwithminimal,butsufficient,measurementsonstrategic locationstoachievetherequireddataaccuracy.

    INTEGRATED MEASURES

    ¨ Integratedmeasurescombiningmultipleofthedomains:buildings,smartgridsanddistrictheatingandcooling

    Integration inthegridofdecentralizedenergygenerationcombinedwith localstorageanduseofelectricalenergy.Andmatchedwithgridcapacityoptimizationandpowerqualitymonitoringandcontrolfeatures.

    ¨ Whichotherstakeholderswouldneedtobeinvolvedintheimplementationofthekeyinnovation?

    For far reaching grid insights a large part of the customers need to have a smart electrical meter installed. In theNetherlandsthecustomerisintheleadtoacceptthismetertobeinstalled.Soforsuccessofthisprojectweestimatethat80%ormoreofthecustomersneedtohaveasmartmeterinstalled.

    CHALLENGES TO BE ADDRESSED BY CITY- ZEN

    Inthelowestlevelofthethegrid,thesmartmetersinthehousesofthecustomersarethesuggestedsecondarycomponentsformonitoringandcontrolpurposes.TheusageofsmartmeteringdataforadvancedgridoperatorpurposesintheNetherlandsisafairlynewdomain,andlegislationsarestillindevelopment,bothinternallyatgridoperatorsandonanationallevelandtherelevantlegalauthorities.TheprojectEnd-2-EndSmartificationhasalighthousefunctionforthesedevelopmentsanditiscrucialtohandlethelegalprescriptionswithcautionandcare.
