Annual Report 2014 - 20151

Dear West Point Grey Academy Community:

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I am pleased to present the West Point Grey Academy Annual Report for 2014–2015. Now in our 20th year, we are extremely proud of our reputation as a leading independent school in British Columbia and Canada. Our school’s authentic culture is a byproduct of our welcoming and inclusive community—one that is progressive, open and involved.

Tam Matthews’ experienced leadership has been apparent since becoming Head of School in 2013, when he led our school through a strategic planning process, with teaching and learning, learning environments, community engagement and healthy balance defined as key priorities for our school. The Board approved the strategic plan in September 2014 and provided a plan summary at the start of the school year. We are keen to continue to support Tam and his Leadership Team over the next four years of its implementation.

In 2014, we welcomed three Board members: Sacha McLean, George Paspalas and Elena Smith. Together with our seven other Directors, they have been integral in guiding the school’s strategic goals and vision. This year, the Board created the Communications and External Relations Committee in addition to our existing Finance and Audit, Governance and Nominating, Building, and Risk Management Committees, the latter which recently completed a comprehensive risk management policy handbook and risk register for annual tracking.

A highlight in 2014–2015 was the We Live Here campaign to fund, in part, the renovation of the junior learning commons, university and career counselling centre, senior lobby and early childhood education centre. We thank the over 350 families who donated more than $2 million for these terrific capital improvements, which greatly enhance our students’ educational experience, as evidenced by the previous summer’s junior lobby, senior study and dining hall renewals.

Another notable event was the October 2014 transfer of the neighbouring Jericho Garrison property to Canada Lands Corporation and three First Nations bands. As an established and recognized key stakeholder in land discussions, we will continue to work closely with our neighbours, the community, the City and the Province to secure our long-term land arrangement. As always, we will keep you apprised of developments.

In this exceptional year, I extend gratitude to our Chair, Bob Standerwick, and all Board directors for their commitment, professional insights and continuing support; to Tam, teachers and staff for their excellent work and dedication; and to our entire community of volunteers for giving so generously to our school. Sincerely, Peter Blake, FCPA, FCAVice Chair, WPGA Board of Directors

3 Annual Report 2014 - 2015

Dear WPGA Families and Friends: In this annual report, we reflect fondly on 2014–2015, which had record applications (692), full enrollment (942), countless student achievements and impressive university placements. In September 2014, the Board of Directors approved our five-year strategic plan, Forward Together, which has brought new ideas, energy and focus. As we look back, we acknowledge the courage and generosity of founders Andrew Chan, Michael Choi, Elsie Sze, Dr. Peter Wong, Dr. Raymond Kwan and colleagues, whose 1996 vision—to build a globally-minded coeducational school—has been guided by the work of Clive Austin, founding Headmaster for 17 years; Robert Standerwick, Q.C., Chair of the Board for 16 years; and Wendy Valdes, Chair of the WPGA Foundation and Parent Volunteer Group for 12 years. We are indebted to Ciara Corcoran, Head of Junior School, and Stephen Anthony, Head of Senior School, both integral to WPGA from day one, and thank all staff, parents, alumni and friends who have contributed to our mission of Shaping Lives of Inquiry, Action and Joy. Indeed, our school would not be as strong without the support of our extended community, and we are continuously seeking ways to give back. For example, in 2014–2015 we built a 1.25-km community trail, hosted a West Point Grey Residents Association event, and assisted our Musqueam neighbours with curriculum development, a homework club, and the c̓əsnaʔəm exhibit at the Museum of Vancouver. Within our schoolwide service program, students cleaned Jericho beach, sang at local retirement homes and performed for the Point Grey Village Business Association. As part of our vision to be leaders in future-focused learning, we introduced four exciting partnerships:• UBC teaching partnership on numeracy in elementary grades • UBC Liu Institute partnership for our Global Studies program • Global Online Academy membership, which includes 63 leading independent schools worldwide• Connected North learning partnership with Cisco Systems and John Arnalukjuak High School, Nunavut In future years, we look forward to establishing partnerships in science, technology, engineering and entrepreneurship. Lastly, we congratulate our 70 Class of 2015 graduates, now members of our global network of 815 alumni, and recognize retired staff members Tony Grant, English teacher, Ursula Diem, Head of Languages, and Christine Poole, Director of Admissions, for their years of dedication. I am most grateful to them and to our students, staff, parents and Board members for making our school community so dynamic and inspiring. Heartfelt thanks, Tam Matthews Head of [email protected]

Dear West Point Grey Academy Community:

On behalf of the West Point Grey Academy Foundation, I am pleased to report to you on the status of the funds over the last fiscal year and recent enhancements in our governance framework.

The West Point Grey Academy Foundation (the “Foundation”) is incorporated under the Society Act of British Columbia and is a tax-exempt, registered charitable organization and public foundation under the Income Tax Act of Canada. An entity separate from the School Society, the Foundation holds funds contributed through donations and other fundraising activities managed by the Parent Volunteer Group (“PVG”) and is responsible for the stewardship of those funds.

The mission of the Foundation is to promote, foster and facilitate a high quality of education at West Point Grey Academy by supporting a culture of philanthropy, participation in school events, and responsible stewardship of gifts and endowments.

The Foundation governance structure includes nine directors with professional expertise in law, corporate finance, accounting and education. PVG representation was added in recent years in recognition of the important capital contribution the PVG makes to the Foundation every year, and we are proud to have our founding Headmaster, Clive Austin, as a director on the Foundation Board.

One of our objectives for the last year was to enhance the governance of the Foundation. After a rigorous RFP process, we appointed Seymour Investment Management as the Foundation’s investment manager. In addition, we adopted a revised Statement of Investment Policies and Procedures, implemented a new best practices policy for endowment management, developed a risk register for the Foundation, and conducted a self-evaluation and an effectiveness review of the Foundation Board.

We are extremely grateful for the generous donations from the West Point Grey Academy community, and will continue to monitor best practices for the governance and stewardship of the Foundation to ensure that we meet the objectives of the Foundation for the benefit of our community. Sincerely, Wendy KingChair, West Point Grey Academy Foundation

WPGA Foundation Financial Summary (as of June 30, 2015)

In 2014-2015, the Foundation Society’s revenues comprise mostly donations (We Live

Here/PVG/Gala donations, philanthropy); its “expenses” are mostly contributions to the

School Society for endowed and restricted program support, PVG-controlled program

support, and defined capital use, including building improvements. Operating costs

consist of investment management fees, external professional fees and some fundraising

expenditures. As of June 30, 2015, some of the Foundation’s assets relate to We Live Here

campaign fundraising. Payment timing for some capital projects has had a short-term

increase in the Foundation’s overall assets.

Not For Profit

West Point Grey Academy, under the name West Point Grey Academy

Independent School Society, operates under the Societies Act

and is a registered Canadian charity.

Tuition Tuition (79%) and government grants (13%) cover operations only,

including teacher and staff compensation, building expenses

(lease, maintenance), programs, technology (infrastructure, software)

and field trips. Tuition does not cover facility improvements,

program enhancements, uniforms, or optional trips and club activities.

West Point Grey Academy Foundation The West Point Grey Academy Foundation is a separate, arm’s length society,

also a registered Canadian charity, that administers all donations to the school in

support of new facilities, program enhancements, scholarships, awards and

endowments. The Foundation also directs funds raised through the Parent

Volunteer Group and oversees endowment fund investments of $5 million.

Parent Volunteer Group The Parent Volunteer Group (PVG) fundraises for school purchases not covered

by tuition, such as robotics and playground equipment, guest speakers and

specialty coaches, athletic and music support (uniforms, equipment), and club

activities. The annual Gala is the PVG’s main fundraiser.

13 Annual Report 2014 - 2015

Page 17: WPGA Annual Report 2014-2015

Dear WPGA Parents and Community:

WPGA’s Parent Volunteer Group (PVG) had a fantastic year in 2014–2015, filled with many community-building and fundraising events. I thank the PVG Executive, PVG volunteers and the entire school community for their time, expertise and financial contributions to achieve the PVG’s mission: to enrich our children’s education by promoting a strong, connected school community and by providing program support.

The year kicked off with our Welcome Back Celebration and biennial Grandparents Day, attended by 400 proud grandparents and family friends, followed by grade socials, Hot Dog Days, Loonie Sale, Gala, Sports Day, New Parent Tea and Teacher-Staff Appreciation Luncheon.

As tuition does not cover program enhancements, such as club activities, specialized coaching and program equipment, fundraising is integral to the PVG’s mandate. In 2014–2015 the annual Gala, the PVG’s main fundraiser, raised $364,000, including $80,000 for the makerspace in the learning commons. We are grateful to Sarah Wood, Gala Chair, and Gala volunteers for their tireless work and dedication, and appreciate all parents who attended or supported this wonderful event. The gift card program is the PVG’s secondary fundraiser and raised $15,000. Thank you to Kean and Kristina Morse for coordinating this initiative and to our WPGA community retailers for participating.

Being involved in the PVG is rewarding on many levels and offers us, as parents, great perspective into our children’s school experience. We welcome all parents to the PVG: please consider offering your time and ideas at any point during the year, and do not hesitate to connect with me or another PVG member to explore volunteer opportunities.

Warm regards,
