SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS MEDIA GUIDE 2017 SEASON 275 GOLDMINE • Smelter joined TE Blake Bell as one of two players on the current roster to be drafted in both the National Football League and Major League Baseball. Smelter was selected in the 14th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins, but elected to play col- legiately before pursuing his professional career. • Smelter originally attended Georgia Tech on a baseball scholarship before joining the football team during the sum- mer of 2013. Smelter played baseball at Georgia Tech from 2011-13, where he pitched and played in the outfield. In 2010, he started 15 games in the outfield and one game on the mound for the Yellow Jackets. He allowed just one earned run in 17.1 innings of work on the mound for a team-best 0.52 ERA among regular relievers and also pitched scoreless ball in 13 relief outings. SMELTER’S TRANSACTIONS Originally the third of three 4th-round (132nd overall) draft choices by SF in 2015...Placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List on 8/31/15...Waived/Injured by SF on 9/3/16...Signed to SF practice squad on 10/18/16...Promoted to SF active roster on 12/20/16. He was named an Aflac All-American in 2009 and a Louisville Slugger All-American in 2010 during his time at Tattnall. Smelter was a well-recognized multi-sport prospect, as he was named Georgia Independent Schools Associated Player of the Year in football in 2008-09 in addition to earning the award for basketball in 2008 and 2010.
