What is the Wrangler Champions Challenge?

presented by Justin Boots

How does a professional sport dedicated to opening doors to top-level competition for everyone with enough talent and grit ... also showcase its top-shelf contestants? Answer: The Wrangler Champions Challenge presented by Justin Boots. The series pits top contestants against top livestock, featuring a unique team competition in addition to individual matches, and is telecast on CBS Sports Net to about 60 million households.

“We have a great sport – the original American sport – and we want to showcase our great athletes and stock against each other to give our fans the best possible show,” said Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Commissioner Karl Stressman when he introduced the series in 2013.

Since then, the Wrangler Champions Challenge has grown to 11 events in the 2016 season, including a September series finale that is among the last major events of the regular season – a crucial factor for contestants making last-stand efforts to capture berths in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER, because money won at Wrangler Champions Challenge events counts in determining those prized slots at ProRodeo’s Super Bowl.

The Wrangler Champions Challenge also promotes team competition. In 2015, the series included 11 teams – seven with rosters drafted by sponsors from the top seven contestants in the previous year’s PRCA world standings, including Wrangler, Justin, RAM, Coors, Pendleton Whisky, B&W Hitches and Texas Landmen. The other four teams, sponsored by Experience Kissimmee, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, ProRodeo Gear and the local venue, had rosters selected anew for each Wrangler Champions Challenge event: the top two contestants in the PRCA world standings 30 days before the rodeo and the top two contestants in the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour standings 30 days before the rodeo. In 2016, team selection will change significantly for both the seven sponsor teams and the other four, now called rotational teams. Sponsor teams will be partially selected (four contestants – two drafted, two picked from a randomly drawn event); the other three contestants for each sponsor team will be based on WEATHER GUARD® PRCA World Standings 30 days before the WCC event. The four rotational teams will have all contestant positions filled by the next highest unselected eligible contestants in the 2016 world standings 30 days before each Wrangler Champions Challenge rodeo.

Wrangler Champions Challenge presented by Justin Boots

Team Results2015 Champion Team: Wrangler

ProRodeo Gear got the 2015 season off to a great start for the Wrangler Champions Challenge presented by Justin Boots; they earned $26,388 in Rapid City, S.D., in February to add to the $13,250 the team had picked up in October 2014 in Kissimmee, Fla., before the draft changed the team roster. That winter total of $39,638 gave ProRodeo Gear a $4,024 lead over RAM Trucks as spring rolled around.

Four different teams won each of the four spring Wrangler Champions Challenge events presented by Justin Boots: B&W Trailer Hitches won in Scottsdale, Ariz.; Pendleton Whisky won in Logandale, Utah; Texas Landmen won in Redding, Calif.; and Experience Kissimmee won in Spanish Fork, Utah. But ProRodeo Gear’s commanding lead coming into the season was enough to keep them on top, with $85,199 to second-place B&W Trailer Hitches with $83,182 by midsummer.

After the three mid- to late-summer events – in Cody, Wyo.; Kennewick, Wash.; and Pueblo, Colo. – the Wrangler team surged ahead, having earned $120,800 for the season. That was more than $3,000 ahead of the ProRodeo Gear team and more than $6,000 ahead of the RAM team.

But at the Finale on Sept. 26, the Experience Kissimmee team collected an astonishing $33,564 – by far the largest team earnings of the season – to pull out a surprising victory in Omaha. The Experience Kissimmee team placed in every event except bull riding, winning first in the team roping; second in steer wrestling, tie-down roping and barrel racing; third in saddle bronc riding; and fourth in bareback riding.

Yet even that inspired effort wasn’t enough to overtake Wrangler’s consistency across the summer. The Wrangler team averaged $13,420 per event from Redding, Calif., in May 2015 through the Omaha Finale in September and finished at the top of the chart for 2015, beating B&W Trailer Hitches by $2,829.

The Wrangler team ended the 2015 season with these members: BB, Kaycee Feild SB, Allen Boore (coming in for an injured Jake Wright) SW, Ty Erickson TD, Adam GrayTR, Coleman Proctor/Jake Long GB, Michele McLeodBR, Joe Frost

Boore was one of several PRCA contestants who made the most of a chance to compete in place of an injured Wrangler team member; those who contributed once each to the Wrangler team’s success included saddle bronc rider Joaquin Real in Scottsdale, Ariz.; bareback rider Ryan Gray in Logandale, Nev.; and bareback rider Luke Creasy in Spanish Fork, Utah. “I was catching a ride because I was up in Tucson the next day,” said Real. “I was tickled to death when they called me to join the Wrangler team for the Champions Challenge. It’s a good deal, especially for a guy needing a little extra money, like I was last year. I was having a rough winter and that caught me up so I could go on for the next month.“

2014 year-end team standings 1. B&W Trailer Hitches $116,2802. RAM Trucks 113,3073. Pendleton Whisky 106,1994. Justin Boots 103,2365. Event venue champions/PRCA 98,863

2015 year-end team standings 1. Wrangler $129,3012. B&W Trailer Hitches 126,4723. Experience Kissimmee 125,6774. ProRodeo Gear 122,4955. Pendleton Whisky 120,682

Best team performance at a single event in 20151. Experience Kissimmee 33,564 points in Omaha, Neb.2. Pendleton Whisky 26,404 in Omaha, Neb.3. ProRodeo Gear 26,388 in Rapid City, S.D.4. Wrangler 21,917 in Pueblo, Colo.5. B&W Trailer Hitches 20,960 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
