WRC2
WHAT IS?THE FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP (WRC) PITS DRIVERS AND
PRODUCTION-BASED CARS AGAINST SOME OF THE TOUGHEST
AND MOST VARIED CONDITIONS ON THE PLANET.
Established in 1973, the WRC is widely regarded as the most
challenging motorsport championship in the world. The roads on
this epic motorsport adventure are spread across more than 15
countries, with 13 rallies on everything from snow packed forest
tracks to rock-strewn mountain passes.
THE HIGH-TECH, HIGH-PERFORMANCE CARS THAT COMPETE IN
THE FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP ARE THE ALL-ROUNDERS
OF THE MOTORSPORT WORLD.
Although they are based on standard road cars and are
idenfiable with the type of car that you buy in your local
dealership, that is where the similaries stop.
They are capable of astonishing achievements on surfaces
ranging from rocky and pot-holed dirt tracks to twisty and
narrow asphalt lanes or ru ed roads covered in snow and ice.
Cars must maintain peak performance in condions where
temperatures can plunge to near -30C at one round and soar to
almost 30C above freezing on the next.
There are several categories within the WRC, the fastest and
most spectacular being for World Rally Cars. These cars are
stripped from a basic road vehicle to a bare metal shell before
being completely rebuilt.
All unnecessary brackets and mounng plates are removed to
save weight and aer around 700 hours of work, the shell
emerges vastly stronger and sffer than before.
The support categories are increasingly less modified than the
headline-grabbing WRC cars but one thing that all rally cars have
in common is that they are fi ed with a steel tubular roll cage to
provide maximum protecon in the event of a crash.

KEY
FACTS2018Total TV audience for the 2018 season again exceeded 800
million viewers according to research from independent analyst
Nielsen Sports.
The intense tle fight in both the drivers’ and manufacturers’
series boosted figures up to the last day of the season. Signifi-
cant year-on-year increases at the final two rounds in Spain and
Australia carried the annual figure to more than 825 million.
An audience of 100 million viewed the glamorous opening of the
new season at Rallye Monte-Carlo. It is the fourth consecuve
year in which the TV audience from the Principality of Monaco
topped 100 million.
Audiences from rallies in Spain and Australia moved closer to
the Monte-Carlo figure, the epic tle fights boosng their viewer
numbers in the region of 90 million viewers each for the first me.
While Europe headed the leading TV markets, there was fast
growing development in Asia with Japan featuring in the top 10
countries.
Turkey, which hosted a WRC round for the first me since 2010,
went straight to the top 10 countries for audience.

ALL LIVE
A TV REVOLUTION
2018 was when WRC truly went live. Not just some of it. All of it.
WRC+, the championship´s own OTT channel on plus.wrc.com,
WRC+ All Live proved ground-breaking and transformed the way
the championship was broadcast.
For the first me, every special stage from each round was stre-
amed live and available to fans via whatever means they chose.
It added up to more than 25 hours’ live coverage from each rally.
Viewers rode with the stars via stunning onboard footage and
enjoyed amazing eye-in-the-sky helicopter coverage.
When the stage ended, expert studio analysis and reacon from
the service park enhanced what they had watched.
There were great moments on the stages and equally capvang
drama off them. Some of the best moments came as viewers sha-
red the frustraons of first Thierry Neuville and then S basené
Ogier as they ba led to repair their stricken cars and save their
tle ambions roadside in Turkey.
All Live was a genuine game-changer for fans.
