The year ending 2015 was a year for discovery at the Western Reserve Historical Society. As Cleveland and the region experiences a remarkable revival, people are more curious than ever about our past and how their stories fit into the broader narrative. To satisfy their curiosity, people are coming to WRHS, the first stop for history in Northeast Ohio. Last year, overall attendance to WRHS increased by 22.5%!
WRHS is reaching out to welcome more people – visitors, students, teachers, colleagues, partners, donors and friends – into our museums, library and historic sites, and we are hearing a refrain, “I had no idea,” as both old friends and new express surprise, wonder and joy at all that WRHS has to offer the community. For example, people had no idea that…
Western Reserve Historical Society is Cleveland’s oldest cultural institution. WRHS was founded in 1867 – just two years after the end of the American Civil War – as a historical branch of the Cleveland Library Association. Today, Library holdings include 250,000 books, 25,000 newspapers, maps, genealogical research materials, millions of photographs, more than 10,000 linear feet of manuscript collections, and audio and video recordings that document northeast Ohio history. Last year, 3,298 researchers used Library collections for book and video projects, exhibitions, historic preservation, community redevelopment projects, family history research, and more.
WRHS owns and operates five sites in four counties of northeast Ohio, including the Cleveland History Center in University Circle, Hale Farm & Village in the Cuyahoga Valley, Shandy Hall in Geneva, Loghurst in Canfield, and the Preservation and Storage Facility in Macedonia. In 2015, WRHS invested more than $1.4 million in capital improvement projects across WRHS with lead support from The State of Ohio, individuals and foundations, including leadership gifts from The Lehner Family Foundation for histroric preservation work at Hale Farm & Village.
WRHS has about 1.2 million items in its Collection, and frequently loans its collections to museums and partner organizations locally, nationally, and around the world. For example, over 70% of the core exhibit at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in Beachwood is on loan from WRHS, and 28 paintings on exhibit at the Union Club in downtown Cleveland are part of
WRHS’s spectacular collection of oil paintings. Last year, WRHS filled Cleveland History Center galleries with its own Sports, Business and
Entrepreneurship, LGBT, Italian American, Costume and Textile, Auto and Aviation, and Fine and Decorative Arts Collections. 1964: When Browns Town Was Title Town, took guests down memory lane for a look at the 1964 Browns Championship season. Crawford Auto Aviation Museum
YES! You can ride on the Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel, the iconic 1910 carousel that has been beautifully restored to operating condition through a partnership between the Cleveland Carousel Society, Euclid Beach Park Now, and the Western Reserve Historical Society. The award-winning Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel opened on November 22, 2014 in the Carousel Pavilion designed by Richard Fleischman + Partners Architects. This transformative project significantly increased the Cleveland History Center’s visibility and attendance, bringing thousands of guests into the CHC and University Circle to discover the incredible collections and stories that live in our Library and Museum Galleries. The Crawford Auto Aviation Collection features 168 antique automobiles and 10 aircraft. On November 22, 1963, Frederick Coolidge Crawford, the head of Thompson Products and TRW, and Historical Society leader for more than 50 years, donated his collection to WRHS. Today, thanks to the generous support from the Frederick C. and Kathleen S. Crawford Fund of The Cleveland Foundation, the Crawford Museum is open every day for tours. In 2015, the Crawford partnered with the AACA to present the first annual Cleveland All Stars Car Show and brought in 27 vehicles for the benefit and continuing enjoyment of our car-loving community. Hale Farm & Village is owned and operated by the Western Reserve Historical Society. In 1956, Clara Belle Ritchie, Jonathan Hale’s great-granddaughter, left WRHS the expansive Hale Family farm in the heart of the Cuyahoga Valley. For nearly 60 years, WRHS has preserved and stewarded the farm and original family collections, including the iconic 1825 Jonathan Hale House, and created the region’s foremost outdoor living history museum, with 32 historic structures, a one-of-a-kind craft and trades program, Marketplace, and a robust, year-round calendar of events and programs. In 2015, Hale Farm’s Civil War Reenactment - the award-winning, largest annual event of its kind in the state - and Made in Ohio Art and Craft Festival broke attendance records.
The Hay McKinney Mansion, the stunning 1910 Italian Renaissance style villa and Cleveland History Center anchor on the corner of East Boulevard and Hazel Drive, is open daily to the public for tours. This National Register of Historic Places site is abundantly furnished with WRHS’s collection of fine and decorative arts. The beautifully restored Vanderbrook Garden, the Hay Mansion’s Italian Renaissance style garden is available for private parties, weddings, and corporate events.
WRHS serves 35,000 schoolchildren annually at Hale Farm & Village and at the Cleveland History Center. In 2015, WRHS reached nearly 10,000 students through its acclaimed Youth Entrepreneurship Education programs that serve every 4th, 5th, and 6th grader in Cleveland Metropolitan School
District, as well as public, private, and home schooled students from all corners of northeast Ohio. The program is
generously funded and presented in partnership with The Burton D. Morgan Foundation, The Cleveland Metropolitan School District, and through the generosity of a host of charitable foundations and individuals, notably The Kent H. Smith Charitable Trust, RPM International, Inc., Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, and the Abington Foundation.
WRHS’s Chisholm Halle Costume Wing houses 40,000 garments, quilts, textiles, and accessories making it one of the largest collections in the United States. Haute couture from such renowned designers as Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Givenchy, and Yves Saint Laurent are represented in the collection. In 2015, WRHS presented In Grand Style, featuring historic garments and accessories of Cleveland’s privileged residents, presented by The Payne Fund and the Museum Advisory Council (MAC) of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The MAC presented WRHS with a leadership gift that allows WRHS to endow a full-time Curator of Costume and Textiles. The Library has a Community History Collection featuring the Jewish American Archives, Italian American Archives, African American Archives, and a Corporate, Philanthropic and Nonprofit Archives among the many collections that document the richness and diversity of our city and region over the last 200 years. In 2015, the African American Archives Auxiliary of WRHS hosted the “Afternoons in the Archives” series to commemorate the 44th anniversary of the Auxiliary. This series showcased collections from WRHS’ African American Archive collections, and shined the light on African American history makers in our region, such as the Honorable Leo A. Jackson, Dr. A. Grace Lee Mims, and Dr. Shirley Seaton.
WRHS has the 100 Year Club of the Western Reserve, a celebration of entrepreneurship – past, present and future. The 100 Year Club event recognizes the entrepreneurial spirit and relentless pursuit of excellence as embodied by century old Northeast Ohio organizations and connects this continuing story to the new businesses, innovators and entrepreneurs of today who are contributing to the economic, cultural, and social vitality of our region. The 100 Year Club brings together the story of regional economic development, social entrepreneurship and philanthropy that is so unique to our region.
Our collections, reach, partnerships, collaborative activities, educational programming, community events, and spectacular exhibitions are no secret, and WRHS is working hard for the community to ensure that we are a valuable, relevant resource to the people of Northeast Ohio, for whom we hold our assets in public trust.

“Cleveland Starts Here” – at the Cleveland History Center, WRHS is creating an all new exhibit experience for audiences of all ages to explore the past, present and future of Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. There is no other place in the city to discover our history in this way. WRHS is partnering with BarrieProjects to create this new, artifact-rich, multi-media experience, full of history and current events with connections that are surprising, fun, and unexpected (opens 2017).
InHale – At Hale Farm & Village, WRHS is revolutionizing the guest experience and the museum industry through social innovation, sustainability, and stewardship. InHale leverages the history of four generations of Hales and the site’s historic and natural resources to create a one-of-a-kind experiential learning community for students, scholars, teachers, enthusiasts, and families, fueled by farming and horticulture, crafts and trades, historic preservation and the HFV Marketplace.
With support from the community, Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, and the State of Ohio, we close the books on another successful year. I thank each and every one of you – our dedicated and talented staff, committed and engaged Board of Directors, loyal members, hard-working volunteers, donors, stakeholders, vendors and partners for your ongoing support, commitment to and interest in the Western Reserve Historical Society. I hope that this WRHS Annual Report to the Community provides valuable information about WRHS for the year ending 2015, and continues to enlighten all of us about the history, value, and uniqueness of WRHS, the first stop for history in Northeast Ohio!
