CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE PROJECTHELPS FAMILIES AND CHILDREN
From Jim Morrow & Ronna Sundell, Mission and Outreafh "
------
We kicked off our Christmas Giving Tree special offering project this past Sunday. As of Monday morning, 35 gift requests had been taken, leaving 19 on the tree. All of thegifts provided through this special offering will go to families that are being cared for bythe Women's and Children's Alliance (WCA). This year we are wanting to help two singlemothers and their seven children in total.
The WCA helps families to get out of abusive and dangerous situations. Thefamilies cared for by the WCA are often going through a very stressful time, and many ofthe children would have a scant Christmas if not for our help. In addition to toys for thekids, the gift requests also include a lot of practical items that will help these families andthe WCA to build safe environments for the children.
H you would like to participate in this very worthwhile offering, it's not too late! Please take a gift request home with you this week or on Sunday. We would like to have abare tree by December 6tb,and a big bunch of gifts under the tree by the 12th! We have toget the gifts to the Women's and Children's Alliance on Monday, December 13, so we needto have your contributions at the Church by Sunday the 12tb. Thanks as always for yourwonderful generosity!
----------------------~~CHRISTMAS FUND SPECIAL OFFERING
SUNDA Y, DECEMBER 19
On Sunday, December 19, we will receive the annual Christmas Fund For TheVeterans Of The Cross Offering which supports ministries to lower-income retired clergyand lay employees as well as to active clergy in times of financial crises.
Gifts to the Christmas Fund bring joy and gladness-in the form of a Christmasthank-you gift check to an elderly annuitant; as pension supplementation to a minister whofaithfully served small congregations that could not afford adequate salaries, and now findsthat their retirement income is not enough to meet basic needs; as emergency assistance toa family recovering from illness or disaster; as health premium supplementation to aretired couple; as ongoing ministerial assistance to many individuals-lay and ordained-throughout the course of the year.
We invite you to join us in proclaiming good news this Christmas to those who haveserved and those who continue to serve our church, through your prayerful contribution tothe Christmas Fund.

--The Preliminary Budget for 2011 was approved at our Congregational Meetinglast Sunday. (Copies available in the office for those who couldn't attend) TheStewardship Committee thanks everyone for their faithfulness and pledges, and remindseveryone who hasn't yet returned their commitment card to do so soon. Our frugal newbudget is about $7,000 less than this year's, reflecting our economic times. The finalbudget will be proposed at our Annual Congregational Meeting on Sunday, January 31.We still have a "gap" between estimated income and expenses, but our StewardshipCommittee figured that if each one of us could increase our pledges by just One Dollar perweek, that gap could disappear!
--Pastor Mike and our Deacons work hard to keep in touch with our shut-ins andothers who can't often get to church anymore. We urge everyone, especially at Christmas,to send a card or make a call or stop over and visit with these great people. Among thosewe especially note Lillian Brandt, Mary Lu Harder, Virginia Scholl, Alice Spielman, LoisMcCurdy, Doris Evans, Gladys Eller, Sammy Musselman, Marian Niece, Ruby Oliason, and Hugh and Ida Lovin. You may know others as well, Thanks for your loving care!
Stewardship Message from Carl Van Slyke
Magnifying GodRochelle A. Stackhouse is the Senior Minister of The Church of the Redeemer,United Church of Christ, New Haven Connecticut.
My soul magnifies the Lord ... Luke 1:47
We hear Mary's song each Advent and revel in its beauty andradical proclamation. But I wonder if we skip too quickly past thisodd first phrase. What does it mean to "magnify" something? Weuse a magnifying glass to make something look bigger to us; themagnification of microscopes helps us see small things as theylook bigger. But how can we make God look bigger to us; whywould we want to when God is already so big?
The way Mary uses the word is slightly different than this. Hersoul, she says, proclaims the greatness of God. She is sooverwhelmed by her growing understanding of what God is aboutto do that she can't say, or sing, enough about how amazing Godis. She proclaims this not only through a magnificent song, but inher body as she nurtures her child and in her steadfast faith whichshe holds as a witness to God's work in the world. By her actionsas well as her words, she proclaims the wonder that is God.
This Advent and Christmas, how is your church magnifying Godin your community? What does God ask of you in order to helpgive birth to the promises of which Mary sang? How is God'sgreatness manifest in the life of the Spirit being born in your lifeand faith community? May your spirits rejoice with Mary as yousee God at work in you!
Thank You!As Chair of this year's Stewardship Committee, I would like to thank the
committee members-e-Clndy Shoemaker, Kim Salwasser, Janice Aagaard, DeniseSteelman, Robin Canning, and Mike Black---and helper Michael Trammell for their helpin carrying out the campaign and putting the 2011 budget together. It was truly a joy.
Thank You, congregation for approving the Preliminary Budget this past Sunday.
Carl Van Slyke, Chair
Notes From The Board
As we gather to do God's work! What an appropriatetopic Mike Hyder chose for the devotion to open our Boardmeeting. As we gathered to do God's work, we asked for faithand patience with each other as we sought to make decisionswhich will affect the Church for the coming year.
On behalf of the Ministry of Volunteers, we thank thosewho have accepted a call to serve as leaders within the Church. This includes Officers, Committee Chairs, and the Diaconate. Our Church is blessed to have willing members to do the workof Church. If you would like to serve on a committee, pleaselet us know . We welcome your involvement.
The Stewardship Committee thanks each of you who havepledged your treasure. For where your treasure is, there willbe your heart. Our proposed budget for 2011 has beenpresented and approved. We welcome your thoughts as theCommittee continues to fine tune next year's budget.
What a wonderful time of year! Thanksgiving enjoyed,Christmas to be enjoyed. Mission and Outreach has a givingtree, and will sponsor several local families for Christmas. Please consider fulfilling a need as listed on a tag from the tree.
Our food pantry is well used this time of year. Are youable to give a few items? Everyone wants to eat every day.
We give thanks to God and ask for blessings in the year tocome.
Respectfully submitted,Will Patterson, Board Chair
