What is Trash Island? Research sponsored by the National Science
Foundation has found that the affected area may be just twice the size of Texas.
The size is determined by a higher-than normal degree of concentration of debris in the pelagic (open ocean) water.
This area is characterized by high concentrations of plastic, chemical sludge, and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre.

Sudan Jan. 24, 2011, New York Times
Sudan has been at war with itself for almost its entire post-colonial history, starting in 1956.
Nearly 99 percent of southern Sudanese voters chose to split off from northern Sudan and form their own country, according to preliminary results of more than 3 million votes, which brings the largest country in Africa a step closer to splitting in two.
