Even worse, smokers with asbestos exposure are fivetimes more likely to develop lung cancer than those whonever smoked.

The decision to smoke is something that affects all thosearound you. In the last 50 years, 2.5 million non-smokingadults died from breathing secondhand smoke. The smokeitself contains more than 7,000 chemicals, hundreds ofwhich are toxic and almost 70 are carcinogens.

Justice Department plans to unveilcriminal charges against GM

MAY 29, 2015

Justice Department plans tounveil criminal chargesagainst GMLast year, Toyota’s record breaking $1.2 billion settlementfor the unintentional acceleration recall shocked theautomotive industry. The unprecedented fine and recalldrew comparisons to GM’s developing issues for the faultyignition switch. Analysts believed the punishment wouldset the standard for the GM investigation.

For more than a year, the FBI and federal prosecutorsfrom Manhattan have been investigating whether or notthe automaker intentionally disclosed the defect andmisled regulators about the full extent of the issues.Additionally, the team looked into GM’s 2009 bankruptcy todetermine if the company was fraudulent during theproceedings by not discussing the known problem with thedetent plunger.

While the specific results of the investigation haven’t beenreleased, the investigators for the Justice Departmentidentified criminal wrongdoing and plan to pursue charges

and fines against GM, and possibly charges against formeremployees, some of whom were fired after Anton Valukascompleted his internal investigation of GM.

Potentially reaching a settlement by summer, the fine isexpected to be greater than Toyota’s last year. BecauseGM is determined to finish the investigation as soon aspossible, a stark contrast to Toyota’s four-year fight againstprosecutors, the company will most likely receive acooperation credit against the total amount.

After fining Toyota, the Justice Department agreed todeferred prosecution, potentially dismissing the fee if itcomplied with regulators and continued to review all safetyprocedures. It’s possible GM could receive a similar deal,or the prosecutors will force the automaker into pleadingguilty, making the company a felon.

This won’t be the final step for GM. Despite theagreement, state attorney generals are conductingconsumer fraud investigations as well as many personalinjury and wrongful death lawsuits being filed by attorneysfor victims.

The U.S. attorney’s office in New York believes GMdeceived regulators and legal entities alike withmisstatements for more than a decade, thus validating thecriminal charge. So far more than 100 people lost theirlives due to failure to disclose with hundreds moresuffering severe and debilitating injuries.

Frightening Halloween statistics tokeep you safe

OCTOBER 31, 2014

Frightening Halloweenstatistics to keep you safeHalloween is a holiday made for children and the young atheart. We can transform into whoever or whatever wewant to be for an evening. Some choose to be ghoulish orwicked while others select a costume based on popularculture. Trick-or-treating, parties and parades offer endlessopportunities for free candy.

Unfortunately, Halloween is the deadliest day of the yearfor pedestrians.

When you think about how many children are out, dartingbetween houses in an attempt to increase their candysupply, this is understandable. The national average ofchild pedestrian deaths is doubled every Halloween.

More than 70 percent of the deaths happen away from acrosswalk or intersection. Children ages 12 to 15 had thehighest rate of death at 32 percent, followed closely by 5 to8 year olds. Young drivers pose additional threats with onethird of the accidents involving drivers between 15 and 25.

Another dangerous consideration? Drunk drivers.

Reports from 2008 to 2012 show that more than 50percent of all fatal car accidents on Halloween involve adrunk driver. Even more troubling, 19 percent of the fatalpedestrian accidents were at the hands of someonedriving drunk.

How can you and your family stay safe this Halloween?

Be alert! Watch as you cross the street for traffic anddon’t let your children go ahead without you.Be careful at night! More than 60 percent of the fatalpedestrian accidents occur from 5 to 9 p.m.Don’t drink and drive! Making the decision to drive drunkcan have expensive and even deadly consequences.Even if you think it’s ok to be reckless, considereveryone else on the road or walking that you couldpotentially harm.

From Goldberg, Persky & White, we wish you the safestand spookiest Halloween.

The escalating effects of head injuriesfor football players

ContactPracticeAttorneys

OCTOBER 2, 2014

The escalating effects of headinjuries for football playersTom Cutinella’s football game Wednesday, October 1,probably began like any other. The guard/linebacker tookthe field amidst cheers from the crowd, ready to take onthe opponent.

Everything changed during the third quarter as his teamfought to keep their 17 to 12 lead. The same roaring crowdfell silent as Cutinella, a junior in high school, collapsedafter a big hit with a member of the opposing team. Hourslater he died in the hospital.

Head injuries in football continue to make headlines acrossall ages. Parents of youth football players debate whetherit’s safe for their child to play in the contact sport. Collegeplayers are beginning to see the risks and quitting after afew concussions. More and more retired professionalplayers are posthumously diagnosed with CTE and currentprofessional players are increasingly violent.

After years of denial, the National Football League (NFL)recently admitted repeated head trauma from playing canresult in long-term diseases, including Alzheimer’s, ALS

and CTE. In fact, the League estimates 1 in 3 players havea higher chance of developing a neurodegenerativedisease than their counterparts who don’t play football.

Researchers at the Department of Veteran Affairs’ brainrepository in Massachusetts found 76 of the 79 brains fromformer players had CTE. In another study, 128 footballplayers donated their brains, many with suspicion theysuffered from the disease. Almost 80 percent of thesample tested positive for CTE. These brains came fromfootballers who played at high school, college orprofessional levels.

CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is the result ofrepeated head trauma. The brain begins the production ofan abnormal protein, tau, which interrupts normal brainfunction before eventually killing the cells. Symptomsrange from depression to dementia. It changes the mind ofits victim.

About two years ago, Jovan Belcher, a former Kansas CityChief, killed his girlfriend and then shot himself in front ofthe teams’ then trainer and coach. His autopsy revealedthe presence of CTE. Former Steeler and Hall of FamerMike Webster was completely unrecognizable before hedied of a heart attack at age 50.

Many are now connecting the NFL’s concussion issues toits domestic violence issues. While the two cannot bedefinitively paired, research confirms the longer someoneplays, the heightened chance of long-term brain injury, which leads to bouts of rage and increased aggression.

These potential problems begin young, as the NFL helpsfund youth football programs with a reported $45 millionper year. Heads Up USA tries to teach proper tackling toreduce the risk of traumatic brain injury, but there’s noresearch that supports a different style of tackling is anysafer.

Football is an American pastime, but it’s cutting too many

How Jason Luckasevic’scrusade against concussionsis making a differenceTo be a pioneer means to be the first to recognize aproblem or situation and work to develop a solution. Oftenmocked and misunderstood, pioneers face an uphill battleto prove the worth of what they’re trying to accomplish.

At Goldberg, Persky & White, we pride ourselves on beingpioneers in the field of asbestos litigation. For more than30 years, we’ve been on a journey toward compensatingthose injured by asbestos. Before companies admittedresponsibility and awareness of the dangers, we werefighting for working men and women.

This spirit is something we admire in Jason Luckasevic, ashareholder at GPW.

Almost a decade ago, Jason learned about the connectionbetween the NFL and chronic traumatic encephalopathy

In the years since, the lawsuit gained momentum and wasjoined by attorneys around the United States. Thisgroundbreaking case changed the game and made peoplerealize the long-term effects of repeated concussions.Football teams, from youth leagues to college toprofessional levels, are finally paying attention to researchand making changes.

Now as the fairness hearing approaches for the NFLconcussion settlement, many are recognizing Jason andhis clients for their persistence. He’s no stranger to mediainterviews and publicity associated with the settlement.

Recently, Jason was recognized in a New YorkTimes Magazine cover story for his fight: “How OneLawyer’s Crusade Could Change Football.”

“The New York Times article was very powerful and anaccurate recounting of the events; however, there is somuch more to share. Be sure to stay tuned,” Jason addedmysteriously.

While the settlement isn’t perfect, Jason recognizes thestrides made to help the players and the groundbreakingnature of the lawsuit.

“This case may go down in history as one of the mostfamous civil litigations of all time because it involvesprofessional athletes and the most famous sport inAmerica,” Jason said. “I am proud to go down in history asthe lawyer who started it all. I feel personally vindicatedbecause there were many doubters.”

From this experience to his involvement on the Brain InjuryAwareness Association of Pennsylvania board, Jason

The reason we celebrate Labor Day

AUGUST 29, 2014

The reason we celebrateLabor DayLabor Day weekend serves as an annual farewell tosummer with businesses staying closed through Monday, providing a long weekend for families and friends to gathertogether and enjoy the warm weather one last time. Butwhy do we celebrate Labor Day?

Like many holidays, Labor Day has become somethingregularly observed but little understood. We enjoy the dayoff work without taking time to appreciate the actual causefor celebration.

More than 130 years ago, two men had the same idea tohonor the workers who built the United States. Thethoughts of Matthew Maguire, a machinist, and PeterMcGuire, cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, created a proposal adopted by the Central Labor Union inNew York. The first celebration was held September 5,1882.

From the beginning, Labor Day was a celebration. Aparade was held for the workers to march in and berecognized for their dedication and spirit. When it finished,a carnival was held for their families to enjoy as anexpression of gratitude.

The reason wecelebrate LaborDay

Page 14: Writing Examples - Complete

Other cities and states quickly adopted the holiday withtheir own parades and parties in honor of the workers. After twelve years, more than 20 states celebrated LaborDay and Congress passed an act June 28, 2014 thatmade it a national and legal holiday.

Originally celebrations occurred at different times in theyear, with many falling in line with International WorkersDay. Eight years before the act was created, theHaymarket affair occurred in Chicago, causing May 1 to beselected as the international holiday. President GroverCleveland, who signed the Labor Day act into effect, avoided the more common holiday to differentiate it fromCommunist and Anarchist movements. Instead he choseto honor the month originally selected more than a decadebefore.

This year marks the 120th anniversary of Labor Daybecoming a nationally recognized celebration. For many, itsignals the return to school. College football begins LaborDay weekend and the NFL regular season kicks off thefollowing Thursday.

Every holiday has meaning. Take a moment to thank theworkers in your lives, the ones who continue to build, shape and better the United States.

Lung cancer is more than a smokers’disease

NOVEMBER 25, 2014

Lung cancer is more than asmokers’ diseaseThe world seems to turn pink each October in honor ofBreast Cancer Awareness Month, but little recognition isgiven to the month that follows. November marks LungCancer Awareness Month, intended to educate the publicabout the leading cause of cancer deaths among men andwomen in the United States.

As smoking rates decrease, the rate of lung cancer casesare diminishing as well, but it’s still the second mostdiagnosed cancer in the United States. Just three yearsago, more than 200,000 people were diagnosed, accounting for 14 percent of all cancer diagnoses. Lungcancer is also responsible for 27 percent of all cancerdeaths, including 156,953 in 2011.

It’s also one of the most poorly funded cancers. Although itkills more than colon, pancreatic, prostate and breastcancers combined, it receives less than $1,500 in federalresearch funds per death. This is compared to breastcancer, which receives almost $26,500, and prostate withalmost $13,500.

Similar to other lung-based cancers, like mesothelioma, lung cancer symptoms typically don’t present themselves

until the disease is in a later stage. Common signs of lungcancer include chest pain, wheezing, bone pain, shortnessof breath, headaches, new cough that can’t be relieved, coughing up any amount of blood, unintentional weightloss and any changes in a chronic cough.

Often labeled a ‘smoker’s disease,’ lung cancer is primarilycaused by cigarette smoke, but not exclusively. When thecarcinogen-filled smoke is inhaled, either directly or viasecondhand smoke, the tissues in the lungs begin tochange. Bodies attempt to repair the smoke damage, buteventually the cells begin to behave abnormally, increasingthe risk of cancer.

If you are a smoker, quitting significantly reduces your riskof lung cancer, even if you’ve smoked for many years.

But what if you never smoked or experienced long-termexposure to a smoker? Other causes include a familyhistory of lung cancer, diet and different substanceexposures at home or work, including radon or asbestos.

Before the substance was banned, asbestos productswere found everywhere: in building materials, tiles, insulation and much more. The carcinogen affectseveryone differently, depending on the asbestos exposuresource, how long a person was exposed and to how much, the type of asbestos as well as other factors like whether aperson smoked.

In fact, the asbestos and smoking combination isespecially harmful. Smoking plus asbestos exposureincreases the risk of developing lung cancer by five ormore times than smoking alone.

Learn how to quit smoking this November and improveyour health.

May Day marks bloody historyfor workers rights in UnitedStatesThe first day of May is globally known as May Day orInternational Worker’s Day. While cities around the world, such as Jakarta, Istanbul, Bangkok, Berlin and Moscow, hold protests and demonstrations to celebrate, the holidaysees little recognition in the United States.

Some cities, including Washington, D.C., plan rallies forMay Day, but generally the day passes with minimalattention about the rich history that led to its creation.

History that begins in the United States.

During the late nineteenth century, the working classexperienced deplorable conditions. With few labor laws inplace, adults and children worked more then 10 hours aday in unsafe environments.

In some situations, life expectancy hit as low as the early20s with men, women and children unnecessarily dyingevery day. Socialism and anarchy grew in popularity

because it provided solutions for the working class, including options for more power and opportunity.

With no hope of escape except death, something neededto change.

The Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions(predecessor to American Federation of Labor) held aconvention in Chicago during 1884 to discuss the growingunrest and develop a solution. From those meetings, itwas proclaimed that as of May 1, 1886, all workdays wouldlast eight hours.

Planning to enforce the change with demonstrations andstrikes, anarchists believed the solution was too“reformist,” but thousands upon thousands joined thecause and pledged to make the proclamation a reality.

In 1885, a railroad strike turned bloody, causing Chicago tobe on edge about the approaching strikes. More than300,000 workers walked away from their jobs May 1, 1886.For two days, more employees peacefully left work to takea stand against their employers and the unsafe conditions.

After months of striking, violence eventually broke out atthe McCormick Reaper Works , causing at least twostrikers to lose their lives.

Outraged, the anarchists held a public meeting thefollowing day in Haymarket Square in Chicago to discussthe incident. While bystanders claimed the speech waspeaceful and not intended to incite action, the policebegan to break up the crowd before a bomb of unknownorigin was thrown at their ranks.

Approximately 16 people, civilians and officers, were killeddue to the bomb and indiscriminate gunfire after itsdetonation. Five anarchists were tried and sentenced todeath, not for their crimes but for their beliefs.

Eventually, more labor laws were enforced to create betterwork environments, including laws about safety and the

International Worker’s Day isn’t just a reminder of the daywhen the workers fought for the right to an eight-hour day;it’s a way to remember all the sacrifices made by workersin the fight for something many take for granted today.

Almost 130 years have passed since the original May Day,and workers are still fighting for safety in all conditions. Many are still exposed to asbestos, a known carcinogenand killer that can lie dormant in the body for decadesbefore claiming the life of its host.

Ford Motor Co SuperCharger Building RougePlantRiver Rouge, MichiganHenry Ford dreamt of creating a facility to integrate allmanufacturing components for vehicles, from ore toassembly. This plan included a power plant, glass plantand steel mill to make a completely self-sustaining factory.

Before World War I, Ford purchased 2,000 acres along theRouge River with no set purpose until 1917. Franklin D.Roosevelt, then Undersecretary of the Navy, commissioned him to build Eagle Boats to track downsubmarines. Building B marked the beginning of TheRouge.

Construction continued from 1917 to 1928 when thefactory was finally finished. It contained the steel millsnecessary to create the vehicle parts, a glass furnacefeaturing new safety technology to make vehicles moresecure and less expensive, a power plant to run the morethan 1.5 by 1 mile large complex, assembly lines, docksand a railroad system. It was the largest factory in theworld.

Here the pieces for the Model T, Model A, Model B,Mercury, Thunderbird and Mustangs were produced andassembled. At its peak, the Ford River Rouge Complexemployed more than 100,000 people with better wagesthan positions in similar industries.

By the 1960s, growing pressures toward moreenvironmentally stable facilities became a growing concernacross the nation and Ford Motors began building factoriesacross the United States and the site in Dearborn wasdownsized, including the furnaces. In 1981, the steel millbecame an independent factory and by 1989 Ford sold itto Rouge Steel.

Unfortunately, Ford operated the mill during the 1940s to1970s when asbestos was used throughout steel mills asinsulation.

Steel Mill Details

Although the Ford River Rouge Complex opened in 1917,the first coke oven wasn’t used until 1919. Within the nextfew years, blast furnaces were added and finally in 1926the steel making furnace and rolling mills were opened.Freighters hauled the iron ore up the River Rouge anddeliver it to Ford’s docks.

Many positions and occupations within a steel mill allowedextreme levels of asbestos exposure among the workers. When inhaled, asbestos is a carcinogen that can causeseveral cancers, like mesothelioma, lung cancer and coloncancer, as well as asbestos diseases like asbestosis.

Some of the most dangerous areas for workers found atthe Rouge include blast furnaces, coke oven, basic oxygenfurnaces, hot strip mill and annealing furnace.

Different jobs associated with the blast furnace include:

The keeper instructs and advises the work that needscompleted for the casting and flushing of a blast furnace. This includes drilling the taphole to fill ladles with themolten metal, guiding the oxygen lance into the tapholeduring the tapping of the furnace and letting the molteniron flow into ladles and runners, plugging the taphole. The keeper helper assists the keeper in tapping ironfrom the furnace. The laborer assists with cleaning up after the variousprocesses and performs other types of manual work.A larryman operated the larry car, or a car on rails witha tapered underside used to charge coke ovens fromabove. moisture and more volatile chemicals to be baked off, resulting in almost pure carbon substance called coke. Atleast 50 are placed together to create a coke oven battery.

Each oven holds between 15 and 35 tons of coal and thecoke-making process takes around 17 hours.

Coke oven jobs include:

The patcher sprays the walls with fireproofing spray andpatches any worn bricks on the coke oven with arefractory mortar. The heater will monitor the oven temperature andensure it remains at the proper level. Additionally, theheater will inspect the oven and instruct the heater helpand patchers in fixing the walls.A heater helper works with the patcher and heater tomaintain and operate the coke ovens.A pipe fitter is a type of laborer that maintains thepipelines by installing and repairing them and theirfittings and fixtures. The bricklayer keep the furnace lining in good conditionas well as hot metal cars, runner and troughsmaintenance.A larryman operated the larry car, or a car on rails witha tapered underside used to charge coke ovens fromabove. The larrycar would contain ore, scrap andlimestone to charge the furnaces.Production jobs at the coke over included pusher, quench car operator, door cleaner, door operator, tarchaser, wharfman and spellman.

Basic Oxygen FurnaceThe basic oxygen furnace (BOF) is a pear-shaped metalbowl used to strip the carbon and other impurities from theiron coming from the blast furnace to create steel. Linedwith a chemically active heat resistant brick, the BOF istilted and charged with steel scrap before the molten ironis placed on top of the pile. The BOF is then returned to its

upright position and the oxygen lance is inserted into thetop, shooting a high-pressure stream of almost pureoxygen that charges the surface. Fluxing agents are addedto assist the oxygen in burning lime, excess carbon andother impurities and the slag captures the rest. To make a200-ton batch of steel takes approximately 45 minutes in aBOF.

Workers operating the BOF experienced asbestosexposure through curtains, clothing, topping compounds, hot tops, sideboards and refractories.

The keeper inserts the liquid oxygen lance into the topto begin the steel-making process.

Hot Strip MillThe hot strip mill was an innovative process that rolledsteel slabs into strips and was a more inexpensive solutionto prior methods due to keeping every step of the processat the same site, beginning with a blast furnace. The slabsare heated to approximately 2300°F to soften the steal forrolling, assist with surface imperfection removal anddissolve any nitrides or carbides.

The steel slab leaves the reheat furnace and it enters aunit with high-pressure water sprays. Refractory brick andmortar were used with the reheat furnace, createdincreased risk of asbestos exposure in the workers. Next, roughing stands reduce the thickness from about nineinches to one inch. The roughing train cause the slap tobecome longer and thinner, followed by the vertical rolls tomaintain width. At the end of the roughing train, the slab issheared so the transfer bar and can further reduce thethickness. Eventually, the strip is subjected to top andbottom cooling sprays to control the shape and mechanicalproperties before being coiled.

Positions in the hot strip mill:

The coiler is in charge of the equipment used to stack

and coil the products that are rolled on the hot strip mill.A coil slitter will prepare and operate the slitter line andslit the coiled strips.

Annealing FurnaceThe process of annealing heats a metal to change thephysical and occasionally chemical properties to make iteasier to work with. When used with steel, the annealingfurnace lessens internal stresses that may effectperformance and creates an internal structure that is moreuniform.

Annealing furnaces required to following jobs:

The annealer operates the furnaces and ensures thesteel is loaded correctly and monitors the heating of thesteel. The crane hooker is in charge of connecting the craneto the top of the furnace to be lifted.A crane operator controls the crane to lift off thefurnace covers when necessary.A pipe fitter is a type of laborer that maintains thepipelines by installing and repairing them and theirfittings and fixtures. The bricklayer keep the furnace lining in good conditionas well as hot metal cars, runner and troughsmaintenance. The laborer assists with cleaning up after the variousprocesses and performs other types of manual work.

The deadliest days for teen drivers

JUNE 4, 2014

The deadliest days for teendriversSummer is equal to freedom in the eyes of a teenager.School’s out for more than two months and the time isessentially their own. Many spend the days swimming, laying out or traveling with friends.

Unfortunately, the 100 days between Memorial Day andLabor Day serve as the most deadly for teen drivers.

During these 100 days in 2012, almost 1,000 people diedin accidents involving teen drivers, with more than halfbeing teenagers according to National Highway TrafficSafety Administration data.

The increase makes sense, considering teens drive morefor recreation in the summer while transporting friends. Astudy of 52 high school-aged drivers found when therewere loud conversations, the young drivers were six timesmore likely to swerve or brake to avoid an accident.

Overall, teens are three times more likely to be in a fatalcrash than those who are older with more experience. Onethird of teen deaths occur when 16-year-old drivers haveat least one teen passenger with them. Accident ratesdouble at night for teenagers. All new drivers, even thosedeemed “good kids” are at risk to join the 2,800 young

people who lose their lives in crashes every year.

Parents, pay close attention to your young drivers thissummer. It’s your responsibility to keep them safe! Hereare some tips to help save lives:

Make sure your teen and passengers always wear theirseatbelts. While you can’t always be in the car withthem, reiterate the importance and necessity not only tokeep yourself safe, but others in the vehicle. That simpleclick reduces the risk of death in an accident by 50percent.Limit the number of passengers allowed in the car withyour teen. By placing a limit, you may decrease thenoise and distraction level, reducing your child’s risk ofbecoming a statistic.Create curfews to keep your child from staying out toolate and driving in the dark. Driving at night can be anecessity, but not in all situations. Curfews may seemstrict, but they also serve to bring your teen driver homeat a safe time.

We can’t control other drivers on the road, but we can doeverything in our power to travel safely. Be careful andenjoy the summer.

Takata Air Bag RecallDefective Air BagsAnnounced at the end of 2014, the Takata air bag recallinitially affected approximately 7.8 million vehicles madeby 10 different automakers, including Honda, GM andFord. Takata, a major parts supplier, installed airbagsusing an ammonium nitrate propellant in vehicles from2002 to 2008.

By spring 2015, the recall had expanded to include 18million vehicles, a number that nearly doubled on May 19,2015, when transportation secretary Anthony Foxxannounced that Takata agreed that their airbag inflatersare defective and expanded the recall even further. Thenationwide recall now affects nearly 34 millionvehicles from 11 different manufacturers.

The at-risk front airbags arefound on the driver’s side, passenger’s side or both. They have the potential toexplode, launchingshrapnel into the vehicleand causing injury or evendeath. The horrific reportsinclude shards of metalpiercing the face and neckof drivers. At this time, five

The expanded recall surpassed GM’s ignition switch recallnumbers, potentially setting a new recall record in 2015.Encouragement and enforcement from the NHTSA led tothe national recall, affecting 1 in 7 cars in the US.

Airbag Shrapnel InjuriesVictims of the Takata air bag problem have suffered a widerange of injuries from the problematic deployment of theair bag during an accident. These range from abrasions topuncture wounds to severe, life-threatening and even fatalcuts. Injuries tend to be focused on the faces and necks ofthose inside the car.

Injury reports include cases of shrapnel piercing the eyesof drivers, causing vision loss, blindness and even the lossof an eye. A Texas man died after his air bag deployed andreleased a piece of metal that struck him in the neck.

Other claims echo these stories, creating the picture of anair bag exploding metal and plastic pieces at theunfortunate occupants in the vehicle. The airbag shrapnelcan spread so thoroughly and violently throughout thevehicle that in one case, detectives initially believed thoseinvolved were intentionally stabbed.

The collisions are typically low-impact with minimaldamage to the vehicles at odds with the severity of injuriesaffecting drivers and passengers.

Exploding Air BagsTakata’s air bags use a propellant known as ammoniumnitrate. Despite finding alternative solutions, Takata chosethe compound because it’s incredibly inexpensive, smalland light, creating more space-efficient air bags. Providinga compact, cheap air bag device establishes a competitiveadvantage.

Ammonium nitrate is a chemical compound represented asNH4NO3, created from salt of ammonia and nitric acid. It’smost common use is fertilizer, but it’s the main componentof the explosive ANFO, or ammonium nitrate fuel oil. It’s ahygroscopic compound, meaning it collects watermolecules from its environment easily. Storing ammoniumnitrates in humid areas is not advised because itsexplosive nature is easily affected by the moisture in theair.

In general, ammonium nitrate is a volatile combination, cycling through five solid states. Engineers at Takataworked to stabilize the substance, but it is no easy feat. In2006, several explosions at occurred at its plant in Mexicodue to quality control with ammonium nitrate. Takataremains the only auto parts maker to use the substance.

In air bags, the chemical compounds are placed in smalltablets and used as propellants. Upon impact, an igniter

heats the tablet, causing the air bag to fill with gas at morethan 200 mph.

Over time, vehicles in humid areas may experience abreaking down of the propellant. This break down causesa more violent combustion, sending pieces of hot plasticand metal flying through the air bag fabric. Occupants arethen at risk for maiming injury or death.

Liner Notes: What is it about spring that changes your outlook on life? We are

creatures ruled by the seasons, with playlists to match. As the weather turns cold, our

music turns melancholy. When the sun returns, we run to music that makes us feel

alive. Makes us feel as if the world could be whole again. Makes us feel like we’re

going to be alright.

The mixtape title describes the track selection perfectly, but only with the proper

context. ‘The Stars Tell of Spring Returning’ comes from a line in the musical ‘Spring

Awakening.’ If you aren’t familiar, the show is a coming of age story set in late-

nineteenth century Germany featuring characters dealing with themes that

transcend to today: sex, depression, feeling unloved and suicide. After a small village

is scandalized by these things, the protagonists sings the penultimate song,

accompanied by his now dead friend and girlfriend, ‘Those You’ve Known.” It builds

from anger and sadness to hope and belief that there is still goodness in the world

and instead of dwelling, you must move on:

“All aloneBut still I hear their yearningThrough the dark, the moon, alone there, burning

The stars tooThe stars tooThey tell of spring returningThey tell of spring returningAnd summer with another wind that no one yet has knownAnd summer with another wind that no one yet has known

They call meThrough all thingsNight’s fallingBut somehow I go on”

This leads into ‘The Song of Purple Summer,’ where he is joined by the whole cast as

they sing about hope for the future. If you want to feel something in a musical, I

suggest ‘Spring Awakening.’ All the feels plus a great soundtrack courtesy of Duncan

Sheik.

Some of the songs included are relatively new, while others top of the list of my

favorite songs. The common thread is the feeling I have when they play. I believe

music should stir some emotion within you, and the 12 tracks selected never fail.

Side A is more about the personal journey of growing up, challenging yourself and

embracing your youth. They resonate with me as someone entering my mid-twenties

who is just discovering who they are. Side B, however, is all about love.

Full disclosure: I’m single and a hopeless romantic, but the songs on Side B tell me

what it’s like to be in love and to both want and be wanted by someone. Some are silly,

but I think that’s the charm. Love is goofy and I think every complicated female (read:

every female) wants someone to meet them and relay the ideas back. It’s ok that we

aren’t perfect because someday, we might be spotted across the dance floor and fall

in love right there.

Like I said, hopeless romantic.

These are the songs I blast in my car when I’m alone with the windows down. They

remind me I’m not alone. They tell me it’s ok to feel all these things. They let me know

God still loves me and is planning something great. It’s impossible to remain downcast

with this playlist.

Goldberg, Persky & White, P.C.BY 7/11/14 AT 10:24 AM

At Goldberg, Persky & White, P.C., our reputation islargely built on our success with asbestos andmesothelioma lawsuits; however, with more than 20attorneys and five offices in three states, we have avast body of experience in other areas of personalinjury law.

Our attorneys and staff of nearly 100 energetic andhardworking people strive to obtain the bestpossible results for our clients. The dedication of our employees to thecauses of our clients continues to drive our success.

Personal injury lawyers attempt to restore some of what’s lost whenyou've been injured. Car accidents, defective products and occupationalaccidents injure hundreds of people each hour in the United States withthe effects as varied in their causes as they are their consequences.

Many injuries are not as immediately obvious as a truck crash or a fall atwork. It may take weeks for medical malpractice to become apparent oryears for a toxic exposure injury, such as an asbestos-related disease, toreveal itself.

Page 40: Writing Examples - Complete

Injuries don't fit into a simple type and we specialize in the complex. Some specific examples of the types of personal injury cases we’verecently been involved in are:

Serious injuries resulting from riding a lawn tractor that flipped over;An arm amputation resulting from being crushed in a machine at work;Breast cancer that spread because of a failure to diagnose the disease;Colon cancer that spread because of a failure to diagnose the disease;Death resulting from being crushed by a forklift that was driven off anunguarded loading ramp;Death resulting when a construction worker was struck by a van whilepushing a wheelbarrow at work.

Our experience in asbestos and mesothelioma lawsuits, large collectionof corporate evidence and expert testimonies combined with ourdedication to the victims of asbestos exposure make us leaders in thefield. We’ve represented thousands of mesothelioma, lung cancer andasbestosis victims. Because of our involvement in asbestos litigationfrom the beginning, our mesothelioma lawyers have a clearunderstanding of what is required to succeed, especially in mesotheliomalawsuits.

More than 30 years ago, the attorneys with Goldberg, Persky & Whitewere pioneers in asbestos lawsuits and today we’re one of the largestfirms in Western Pennsylvania representing injured people. Thisdedication to protecting individuals and originating new cases isrepresented through our different practice areas, including concussionlitigation.

A recent ruling for the case gave preliminary approval to anuncapped fund from the NFL, allowing compensation to those sufferingfrom ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s andassistance to those affected by chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)and their families.

We continue to defend the rights of hard working men and women.Whether from long-term asbestos or chemical exposure, occupationalinjuries, medical malpractice, car accidents or other injuries, we’vehelped thousands recover damages after personal injury.

We have attorneys licensed in seven states and offices in Pennsylvania,Michigan and West Virginia. We’re working lawyers for working people.

Why should you want to get coffee withus?Posted by admin on Jun. 17, 2015 / Professional Development, Membership,Chapter Updates / Subscribe 0

By Chelsea Cummins & Samantha McClintock

It’s an extremely risky thing, asking someone else to coffee. Who knows how they willrespond. Perhaps it will sound like the best idea in the world or maybe they wouldrather have coffee thrown on them. When you ask an entire Chapter out, you’re settingyourself up for major rejection.

The PR Pros Getting Coffee event series is all about the board getting to know themembers, hearing their thoughts and trying to get everyone more involved with whatwe do. While this sounds beneficial from our end, it’s understandable you might still behesitant.

We could pitch to you the benefits of joining and attending such events, but insteadwe’re going to tell you why you should get coffee with us, specifically Chelsea andSamantha.

Our story begins like many others, and it was friendship at first roommate debacle and

we were forced to cohabitate. Just kidding, we knew each other before that. Bothpublic relations majors, we began actively pursuing the same opportunities andclasses, recognizing we made kind of a dream team (still do, TBH).

Fast forward five years later and we’re both working in Pittsburgh in our desired fields, one for a nonprofit and the other for a law firm. We’ve settled here after other positionswith universities, theaters, agencies and more.

In our free time, we enjoy watching Chopped and Grey Gardens (both the originaldocumentary and movie), usually while painting our nails and drinking tea. There’s apower struggle in our duplex between Sam’s rabbit, King Conan, and Chelsea’s puppyGomer. Both believe they should rule and we kind of let it happen.

If you aren’t sold yet, keep in mind that we’re both runners who manage to notconstantly talk about running, which is rare. We could probably win an award for mostBuzzfeed articles shared between two people. Despite the professionalism I’m sure youfeel oozing out of this, we’re pretty chill humans who like to go to coffee shops andenjoy caffeinated beverages.

More importantly, we’d love to buy you coffee this Friday at Zeke’s on Penn Avenueat 9 a.m. We can talk about Chapter improvements, event suggestions, Harry Potter, geodes or maybe that Game of Thrones season finale. Please say yes.

We will see you there or we will see you another time.

Check yourself before you stressyourselfPosted by admin on Apr. 29, 2015 / Professional Development / Subscribe 0

Did you know that April is National Stress Awareness Month? According to the US

Page 46: Writing Examples - Complete

Department of Health & Human Services, stress can have short- and long-term effectson our brains and bodies, including risk of depression, stomach disorders and strokes.Yikes.

Every year, CareerCast ranks the most stressful professions and for the first year in awhile, public relations didn’t make the top 10 (although event planner did). At onepoint, PR ranked higher than some military and police-like jobs. Obviously, the noblepeople of the profession protested and we moved back a few places, but the pointremains. We work in a high stress field.

I believe the stress comes from two areas, the first being the obvious work-relatedtasks and deadlines and the never ending work for our supervisors, businesses andclients. The business of making someone or something else look good never sleeps.Additionally, most PR people fall into a similar type. We’re ambitious and passionateperfectionists trying to do the best job possible in all situations.

But at what cost to our personal health?

Now, writing this I must say I’m incredibly #blessed with a very low-stress job. As amarketing coordinator for a law firm, I rarely face tight deadlines and if I don’t completea project by the scheduled date, everything is ok. I understand this isn’t always thecase depending where you work in PR, but I’m sure we all share the pressures outsideof work – those pesky problems known as family, friends, grad school, volunteer work, adult responsibilities and everything else that piles onto your calendar.

We’re busy people. Busy at work, busy at home and surrounded by never ending to dolists in an attempt to get a handle on our lives and workloads.

Seriously, just writing about this stresses me out.

While stress is sometimes inevitable given everything I mentioned, it doesn’t have torule our lives (although sometimes it feels like there is a wizard in my brain constantlyadding new tasks and laughing as I become more overwhelmed). To fight back againstthe madness, here is a simple three-step guide to a less-stressed life.

1. Check yourself

Sometimes it feels like I go to bed ready to face life and wake up the next morningpositive life is going to crush me. In reality, it’s typically a slippery slope. We thinkwe’re in control at the top of the mountain, skiing like a boss, until suddenly we’retripping and rolling down the hill praying we don’t get stabbed by our skis (can thathappen? I don’t ski).

Always be aware of the warning signs: What’s your grocery situation like? Are youeating full meals or snacking on Belvita crackers you found at the bottom of thedrawer? Are you afraid to check the massive amount of emails piled up and feelingreally guilty for ignoring? Conversely, are you afraid to let emails go unanswered? What about your personal life – when is the last time you spent time with someone andjust relaxed?

At first, we may rationalize some of those choices, like we haven’t had time to getgroceries but it’s fine because we’re forced to eat the food we have or you’re really

Page 47: Writing Examples - Complete

important and if you don’t respond to this email immediately you may get fired. Inreality, the stress is beginning to consume us but instead of stopping it, we feed thebeast and eventually succumb to panic.

2. Find ways to pause and breathe

There will be times without pause, unfortunately. Occasionally stress is something wecreate through procrastination, but more often it’s just a period of time whereeverything caves in and you’re constantly fighting to keep your breathing normal. Whenthis happens, find something to calm you down, even if it’s for five minutes.

Personally, I enjoy prayer and yoga in the mornings to start my day. Talking to Godwhile stretching it out helps me center the source of frustrations and see thateverything will be ok. Another activity is being completely irresponsible and going tothe movies. Nothing like a cinematic adventure to keep your mind off of your to do listsand just relax for two hours.

Maybe for you it’s a few minutes of meditation at work when another project falls intoyour lap and you’re not sure you can manage. Maybe creating to do lists helps yourbrain calm down and helps you focus. Whatever it is, find it and make it a habit.

3. Prioritize (and I don’t mean with to do lists)

We think of prioritizing as making more to do lists and highlighting the most importantactions first. While this can be good, it’s important to take a step back and look at thepriorities in your life. What’s more important in the long run – working long hours andweekends to please your client or catching your child’s game or performance? Iunderstand jobs matter, but so do our relationships with the people we love.

I know it isn’t always possible, but when you can, think about the importance ofwhatever it is you’re stressed about. Too often I think we allow temporary stresses toaffect the permanent in our lives. Most things are fleeting, but relationships matter. Ifwe spend too much time trying to perfect the relationships with our clients, we maylose sight of the personal ones we need. Maybe you might miss a deadline, or be alittle later than expected, but in the end it’s worth it to pause and just be with thepeople you love and who love you.

Do you think I’m crazy? What are some ways you like to de-stress? Tell me all yourthoughts in the comments.

Three students sacrifice holidays for benefit of others

Students help Wilkes-Barre rebuildIn the wake of destruction and

devastation, it is the goodwill of others that allows those eected to rise up and regain their lives. At Waynesburg University, students have the opportunity to demonstrate God’s love by dedicating their time to assist those in need.

Over Thanksgiving break, seven students spent five days in the Wilkes-Barre area on a mission trip led by Dave Calvario, dean of students and director of the Center for Service Leadership, and Jason Falvo, assistant football coach, head track and field coach and life skills instructor.

When Tropical Storm Lee struck the Lackawanna Presbytery and Susquehanna River area in September, it ravaged the area. Preceded by flooding in 1972 and 2006, all records were broken when Lee produced a year’s rainfall over the area in one weekend.

Nick Wozniak, a senior communication major, was shocked to see the area in turmoil months later.

“I was in disbelief after seeing some of the houses completely ruined,” Wozniak said. “In one case we saw a house in which the entire basement was gutted out and you could see inside the basement from the street above outside. There were houses that were completely removed from the foundations. It was quite a sad sight to see, something I never thought could happen in Pennsylvania.”

During the storm, the river rose from approximately three feet to 42 feet. According to Calvario, some places still had debris 20 to 40 feet up in the trees. Homes located in Falls, Pa., were washed o their foundations, leaving only empty holes filled with memories.

As the group moved through the area, they were able to work with the families most aected. They assisted with clearing out a basement, hanging insulation and cleaning a park, among other activities. The group partnered with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Agency and the Lackawanna Presbytery, one of 16 presbyteries in the Synod of the Trinity and part of the Presbyterian Church USA.

Wozniak found inspiration from the families and their perseverance. Rather than accept defeat, they continually fight in an eort to return to life the way it was before the storm.

“Watching these families be so motivated to get their lives back in shape was such an inspiration,” Wozniak said. “Some of these families have lost a lot, and instead of saying ‘woe is me’ they worked hard alongside us to get their lives back on track. That is something I really admired.”

S ince November of 2002,

Waynesburg faculty, sta and

students have traveled more than

3,000 miles to experience something

far more beautiful than the tangible

gifts given throughout the Christmas

season. Instead of iPads and designer

bags, students will experience permanent

life changes brought to light by little

children and love.

On December 17, Waynesburg

students Marissa Barr, Leeann Danley

and Bethany Taylor will travel to Patzun,

Guatemala, for a not so typical three-

week mission service trip at the Centro

Nutricional y Hogar de Ninos. Two

weeks later, the women will be joined by

17 additional Waynesburg students and

trip leaders Pat Bristor, associate dean of

students, and Heidi Szuminsky, director

of Alumni Relations, for Waynesburg

University’s annual one-week trip.

Ironically, in the same year that

Waynesburg University celebrates the 10

year anniversary of its partnership with

the Guatemalan children’s home, an

and tin representing the pliability of a

commitment, students are more excited

than ever to surrender to God’s plan.

For Marissa, Leeann and Bethany, the

families is one they consider blessed to

experience.

This year marks Bethany’s second

trip, and her desire to return rests in

her longing to literally “be the hands

and feet of Jesus.” After last year’s trip

created life-changing relationships,

Bethany knew she would soon return.

“Those bonds weren’t something that

I could just move on from,” she said. “I

can honestly say that saying goodbye

to the kids at the Center was one of the

hardest experiences of my life.”

Upon returning home, Bethany made

plans to be a part of the next Waynesburg

trip, but that plan, according to Bethany,

didn’t seem like enough.

As she began to orchestrate her own

summer 2012 trip, God revealed that He

had other plans. Bethany was approached

by Leeann to be a part of the three-

week trip, and feeling that her prayers

had been answered, Bethany, without

hesitation, responded, “Yes.”

Similarly Leeann knows that this trip,

her third, was one she was called to take.

Like her counterparts, Marissa won’t

be experiencing the service mission

trip left Marissa hoping for a chance to

return.

“The kids stole my heart,” she said.

“Because of how much last year’s trip

changed my life, and how much I think I

changed those kids’ lives, I really wanted

the opportunity to do it all again.”

In addition to the familiar

responsibilities at the orphanage, Leeann

is looking forward to celebrating a

dierent type of Christmas.

“I will

be able to

celebrate

Christmas

in honor

and

celebration

of Christ’s birth, not the commercialized

version that American culture has

created,” she said.

Bethany too knows that what she is

called to do in Patzun will yield a far

greater reward than any package under

the tree. While she expects to miss

her family and the familiar holiday

traditions, Bethany says the children in

Patzun are who she is called to serve this

holiday season.

Campus organizations support Project Bundle-Up’s mission

Inspiring Students to Pursue Lives of Purpose

T he warmth from a coat during

the winter season is a gift taken

for granted. When winter winds

sweep across western Pennsylvania,

many residents are left to brave the

cold defenseless. This fall, Waynesburg

University students came together with

fervent passion to assist Project Bundle-

Up in its eorts.

For 25 years, the Salvation Army and

WTAE have worked together to provide

warm outerwear for disadvantaged

children and seniors. Approximately

7,500 individuals are helped each year

through fundraisers completed by many

organizations supporting the Project

Bundle-Up mission.

For three years, the junior Bonner

Scholars have held a cheesesteak

fundraiser, open to students and the

public. According to Sarah Brandstetter,

coordinator of Bonner Scholars, the

students selected this organization

because of their passion to provide coats

to those in need. This year’s cheesesteak

event raised nearly $600.

For Evan Kephart, a junior biblical

and ministry studies major, making

cheesesteaks is a welcomed opportunity

“It’s great to see the money we raise

staying in the area and helping kids stay

warm during the Christmas season,”

Kephart said.

While the Bonners continued a well-

established fundraiser, Student Senate

planned a new one. The Harvest Festival

was created for organizations to join

together for a good cause. Held this fall,

more than 20 organizations set up themed

booths complete with homemade snacks

to raise $250.

Natalie George, a junior English major

and Student Senate president, is proud of

the student response both in the planning

and execution of the event. George

attributes their hard work to their belief

in the cause.

“Students chose to support Project

Bundle-Up because, as the weather gets

colder, we are each reminded of how

important it is to have a coat,” she said.

“It’s a simple reminder of a local need,

and students saw that need and responded

to it.”

Colleges Against Cancer named outstanding organization

F heart of the Waynesburg University

campus community. The desire and

ability to combat cancer and ultimately

make a dierence in the lives of numerous

individuals around the world was at the

forefront of priorities in the Oce of

Student Activities. As a result of the deep-

seated passion, the campus community,

led by Kelley Hardie, assistant director of

Student Activities, has worked tirelessly

conquer a mammoth beast.

In 2007, Colleges Against Cancer

(CAC) status was granted to Waynesburg

University by the American Cancer

Society after an application process sought

by Hardie. The status allows Waynesburg

to run a CAC student chapter as a campus

organization devoted to raising money and

awareness for the ACS. With the mission

of education, advocacy, survivorship,

and involvement in the American

Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life,

Waynesburg’s CAC chapter has proven

itself to be one of the largest and most

valuable student organizations on campus.

The hard work and dedication of

university students, faculty and sta has

not gone unnoticed. Recently, at the local

celebration of American Cancer Society

Volunteers, Waynesburg University was

named the Outstanding Organization of

the Year for Greene County.

The award was accepted by Hardie,

appropriately Waynesburg University’s

CAC faculty advisor. Margie Smith,

Senior Income Development

Representative for the American Cancer

Society, deemed Waynesburg University a

“deserving recipient of the award.”

“The support from the student body and

faculty and sta has helped tremendously

in raising awareness of the mission of

the American Cancer Society in Greene

County,” Smith said. “These students are

self-motivated, thoughtful, creative, and

dedicated to the mission of the American

Cancer Society.”

In addition to Waynesburg’s support of

ACS, Smith said the Waynesburg students

involved with CAC give others, including

her, “a sense of comfort that there is hope

for a secure and prosperous future.”

“It is so refreshing to see our youth

give so much of themselves for a cause

that helps so many others, most of whom

they will never know. In a world where

self-absorption and over indulgence is

so prevalent among many young people,

these students exhibit qualities of

They are truly inspiring,” Smith said.

Kaitlyn Karan, CAC president, said the

award has fueled the organization’s desire

to continue to make a dierence.

“Receiving this award shows that we

are succeeding in our mission and making

a dierence not only on campus, but

in Greene County,” she said. “It is the

brings us together as an organization,

and to be awarded for our eorts is just a

bonus.”

Activities like Think Pink Week, Dig

for the Cure and Kiss Away Cancer,

among many others, have helped students

understand the importance of CAC’s

presence on campus and beyond. Events

like the University’s annual Mini-Relay

for Life, an event that has consistently

raised more than $10,000 per year, have

helped to contribute to the organization’s

success.

In addition to the University’s

Appreciation as well as the Outstanding

Participation Award for her involvement

in Colleges Against Cancer.

Kaitlyn’s selection came as no surprise

to those who know her passion for both

CAC and ACS. Participating in Relay

for Life since she was in the sixth grade,

Kaitlyn’s 11-year involvement with

the organization speaks volumes of her

commitment to its mission.

Kaitlyn joined CAC as a freshman, and

has since served as the Mini-Relay for Life

Co-Chair for two years and the president

of CAC for one year.

“I plan to continue with this

organization long after graduation from

Waynesburg University,” she said.

Working alongside Kaitlyn, Shawn

Wharrey and Jessica Malingowski,

Mini-Relay for Life co-chairs, have also

been instrumental in the success of the

relatively new campus organization.

“These individuals are very impressive

leaders that have been instrumental

in achieving the tremendous level of

success that Waynesburg University has

achieved,” Smith said.

For the past four years, Waynesburg University students, faculty and sta members have joined together in the fight against cancer. Passionate leaders and the desire to make a dierence has lifted a relatively new campus organization to new heights.

400 children’s books donated by senior Bonner Scholars

Greene County Immersion Mission TripEvery semester, students live out Waynesburg University’s mission of faith, learning and

serving, whether they travel to serve in a Third World country or at home in Pennsylvania. Some students even choose to spend time that could be spent with friends at home to serve over fall or winter breaks. In December 2011, 10 Waynesburg University students served in Greene County, Pa. through the University’s annual Greene County Immersion mission service trip.

Before the trip, the students were educated in four major social issues that currently aect those living in Greene County: poverty, homelessness, hunger and education. During the trip, the students assisted several local organizations including the Corner Cupboard Food Bank, the Salvation Army, St. Ann’s Good Neighbors Dinner and Produce to People.

Each day began with breakfast and devotions in the Prayer Chapel on the campus of Waynesburg University. From there, the students served at a dierent organization each day and late into the evening.

Kelley Hardie, assistant director of Student Activities at Waynesburg University and leader of the Greene County Immersion trip, says it was rewarding to experience serving her neighbors in Greene County.

“It was great to see how much hard work, eort and energy each person contributed in making amazing things possible,” said Hardie. “By ringing bells at Wal-Mart and Giant Eagle, we were able to raise over $1600 for the Salvation Army in four hours.”

M aya Angelou once said that

“Any book that helps a child

form a habit of reading,

to make reading one of his deep and

continuing needs, is good for him.”

Without encouragement to read, some

children may grow up never knowing

the joy of becoming lost in a good

book. To foster this growth, the senior

Waynesburg University Bonner Scholars

recently donated 400 contemporary

children’s books to the Reading Clinic,

an annual spring event hosted by the

Department of Education for local

children.

To complete the project required by

each Bonner Scholar class, students

must identify a need in the community

by impacting and educating the

members. For Leeann Danley, a senior

Bonner Scholar and elementary special

education major, the need was obvious.

Observing how empty the shelves

were in the Reading Clinic, Danley

proposed that for their project, the senior

Bonner Scholars should raise money

and purchase books to contribute to the

cause. Her classmates were quick to

agree, due to the impact of the donation.

“I was astonished by the response

that I received for this project,” Danley

said. “So many of the senior Bonners

understood the need and took action.”

For several weekends in October and

November 2011, the senior Bonner

Scholars collected monetary donations

from patrons at Walmart and Giant

Eagle. As they were collecting the gifts,

they were able to tell the community

members about the need for a literacy

program and the need for the books.

Through their eorts, more than

$1,000 was raised. With this money, the

group scattered to dierent libraries and

book stores in the area to purchase a

multiple copies to give to children who

participate in the clinic. In total, 400

books were added to the Reading Clinic

library.

Dr. Fran Boyd, associate professor of

education and director of the Reading

Clinic, appreciates the additional books

and the continued support of her dream.

“At the clinic, we give the children

tutorial skills, but we also teach them to

learn to love it,” Boyd said. “In a world

of distractions, we want them to pick up

a book.”

Each book is marked with a label

indicating that it belongs to the Reading

Clinic, but an additional insert was

included to honor the students that

worked diligently to provide for the

community. A thank you to the senior

Bonner class is visible to all who read the

donated books.

Debra Clarke, chair of the department

of education, thanked the students

profusely for their generous support.

“Their generous donation of many,

many new books for the clinic is a

wonderful gift and legacy,” Clarke said.

“Long after they leave Waynesburg

University, children in this community

will be reading the books that they have

donated. The gifts will help others learn

to teach and will help others learn to

love to read.”

A fter wrapping up stellar athletic

careers at Waynesburg University,

defensive tackle Darryl Moore,

Jr. and cornerback Sean Hunt were both

recognized as two of the top players in

all of Division III. Moore was lauded by

D3football.com as a third-team selection on

its annual All-America Team. He was also

selected a 2011 preseason All-American by

Beyond Sports Network and was eligible

for the D3football.com team after earning

South Region Squad. The Boardman, Ohio,

native was tabbed with the national honor

following another outstanding season in

which he racked up 60 total tackles, 36

of which were solo stops, nine tackles

for loss and 5.5 sacks. He also broke up

a pass, forced a fumble and recovered a

fumble. Hunt was listed as a third-team

Division III All-American at defensive

back by D3Proday.com. The Coraopolis

native picked up the award after leading

Waynesburg in interceptions for the second-

for second place in the Presidents’ Athletic

Conference (PAC) and helped earn him a

a second-straight third-team showing on

D3football.com’s All South Region Team.

Hunt ended his Waynesburg career with

16 total interceptions, which tied him for

the program record. After dealing with

some early-season injury problems, Hunt

the year, including two picks each against

Saint Vincent and against Widener in the

ECAC South Atlantic Bowl.

Moore and Hunter named All-American
