The Weekend Sun54

As the name suggests, Equippers

Church is about equipping people. Their mission state-

ment reads “Equipping People for Life through Faith in Jesus Christ” and they are a group

of people who believe that church should be enjoyed by everyone. Their services include a good dose of contempo-rary music, and teaching from the bible.

“We can’t wait to launch Sunday services in our own venue - right in the heart of Tauranga,

but more than that, we are so excited to see how we can be a part of making a positive differ-ence in our community through the power of Jesus,” says Carl Green, one of the leaders at Equippers Church Tauranga.

The grand opening of

In a couple of weeks it will be one year since the Rena ran aground on Astrolabe Reef.

A day before the event, in fact just a minute before the grounding, no-one would have expected this outcome.

Yet as we all know, a time pressure, a short cut, a lack of attentiveness and disaster! The key navigational points missed. A wrong course charted, disaster!

A ship always looks on course until it is measured against a reference point, an external standard, something with a known reference.

Our nation is currently debating two very signifi cant issues - The Mar-riage Amendment Bill and Christian education in our schools. Both of these debates are being presented as simple ‘course corrections’ refl ecting changes

in modern society - quite safe if we are sailing in open seas.

However, if we are losing sight of (or deliberately ignoring) the foundations of an equitable society such as honesty and truthfulness, justice and moral integrity - qualities specifi cally taught and modelled in Judeo-Christian tradition - then we run the risk of ‘discovering’ reefs with impending disasters awaiting us.

Before we make course corrections because it looks ‘all clear’ on the surface, let’s be very careful to check that ‘marriage amendment’ and ‘educa-tion without values’ does not run us aground.

As C.S Lewis said, “Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil”.

Equipping people for life through faith

Equippers Church is this Sunday at 10am in their new building, opposite Farmers on Devonport Road. Everyone is wel-come, and there are great children’s programmes available.
