Robert WrightIn the dead o night in 1894, a trembling, wide-eyed 13-year-old boy assisted with his frstsurgeryan experience that changed his lie. Robert H. Wright attended medical school,

then returned home to Hailey, Idaho, to marry Cynthia Beamer, his childhood sweetheart, and to practice in the rontier westa choice that required both rugged courage anddevoted compassion. Called to risk his own lie on multiple occasions, he remainedcomposed during a crisis, and his gentle confdence calmed traumatized victims. At times,he perormed operations by lantern light and traveled by buggy, dog sled, or Studebaker toreach remote patients. In 1917, he led the rescue eort at the North Star mine avalanchedisaster.

Eventually, the doctor welcomed a grandson, also named Robert Wright, who eagerlyabsorbed thrilling tales o a pioneer past. Yet despite their close relationship, the youngerWright sensed mysterious secrets and unspoken heartbreak, and he began to probe orthe untold stories. In Rugged Mercy, he unravels and celebrates the lives o his belovedgrandparents. Alternating between accounts o the doctors decades o medicine and his

own memories o growing up in Hailey, the author provides an intimate glimpse o challenges aced by rural physiciansin the frst hal o the 1900s, o signifcant events in the history and evolution o the Wood River Valley and SunValley resort, and o amily lie in a small Idaho community.
