Step 5 Step 6

In the IP address field enter the value 192.168.0.10. In the Subnet mask field enter the value 255.255.255.0. Once you have done this, click the OK button to dismiss the dialog. You may use other values, however the remainder of this guide will assume this configuration.

Once you return to the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog, select the Wireless Networks tab .

Step 7 Step 8

On the Wireless Networks tab, click the Add... button to create a new network.

In the Network name (SSID) field enter the value D2H. In the Network Authentication field , select Open from the dropdown. Select Disabled from the Data encryption dropdown . Finally click the OK button to save the settings.

The 802.11 standard provides a mode called ad-hoc to allow devices to connect directly to one another. This allows you to use your system out in the field without being dependant on routers or AC power.

Ad-Hoc Networks

Most devices on home networks are configured to automatically retrieve network data from the router. Since there is no router in ad-hoc configurations this information needs to be manually entered into both devices.

Static IP Addresses

Wireless networks must be given a unique name so that devices will connect to the correct system. Under the 802.11 standard this network name is called the SSID.

WiFi SSIDs

The Nikon WT-1/1A supports a form of security called WEP. When enabled in both the camera and the laptop, all transmitted images will be encrypted to prevent anyone from intercepting them. For simplicity sake, this guide leaves this feature disabled. For most people this encryption is not necessary - however if you are concerned about this you can turn it on.

Step 9 Step 10

Once the network is added to the list of Preferred networks we need to configure the computer to connect to the camera instead of other networks in the area. Press the Advanced button near the bottom of the dialog.

In the Networks to access section, select the Computer-to-computer (ad hoc) networks only option . Next, uncheck the Automatically connect to non preferred networks checkbox to avoid connecting to networks other than the ones you created. Once complete, click the Close button to save the settings.

Step 11 Step 12

Once complete, close the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog by clicking the Close button .

In your system tray (the set of icons near the clock on your task bar) locate the ITP icon and right click it. In the resulting menu, select the Edit Users... entry .

Windows XP wireless networking subsystem allows you to maintain a list of preferred networks. This list allows you to control the priority of different access points that you typically connect to. Once a network has been added to this list you can select it and move it up and down with respect to the other networks.Unfortunately, it will not allow you to place ad-hoc networks (like the one we are setting up here) above infrastructure (access-point based) networks. As such, we need to tell the OS to ignore any infrastructure networks that it may come upon as you are working.

Preferred Networks

In order to connect to a FTP server, the WT-1 must supply login infor-mation to identify itself. Before you can use ITP the first time, you need to make sure that there is at least one user for the camera to log in with (steps 12-13).In addition to providing a basic layer of security, user accounts also allow you a greater degree of control. For instance, the files transmitted using each account are saved in different locations. This allows you to easily keep images from different cameras and/or shooters separate from one another.

ITP User Accounts

Step 13 Step 14

Once the Edit User Profiles dialog is up, click Create new user in the panel to the left. Enter a Username and Password in their appropriate fields. Once complete, click the Save button to add the user to the system. Close the dialog when complete.

Right click on the ITP Tray icon again and select the Configure WT-1 entry .

Step 15 Step 16

In the Name field enter a name for this profile (for instance ‘D2H’). Next, select your wireless network card from the Wireless Adapter dropdown . Finally, check off the Ad-Hoc option to configure the WT-1 to transmit directly to the laptop.

Next, select the TCP/IP tab and uncheck the Use DHCP (Retrieve Automatically) checkbox . Uncheck the Gateway and DNS checkboxes as they are not necessary in this context.

Selecting your wireless card from the list. (Step 15) ITP’s WT-1 configurator extracts details from your network card to assist in the configuration process. In order for this to work properly, however, it needs to know exactly which card to use. There are a few hints that you can use to select the correct entry. Firstly, find the adapter configured

with the IP Address 192.168.0.10 ( ). If there is more than one, look for the term Wireless LAN ( ).

The WT-1/1A can be configured in one of two ways. Firstly, the network settings can be entered directly into the camera via the rear LCD. Unfortunately this method can be difficult because of the sheer number of settings that must be dialled in.

The second method is to place the settings into a special file that can be read in by the camera. This file is prepared on a computer and then placed on a Compactflash card where the camera can retrieve it from. In addition to making it easier to set the various parameters, this also allows you to quickly change between different setups when using the transmitter in different venues.

ITP 1.1 further simplifies this process by automatically retrieving many of the settings from your host c o m p u t e r. T h i s p r o c e s s reduces the number of values that you need to provide and reduces the chances of error.

.WT1 Profiles

If you have any small CF cards you can use them to rapidly switch between several dif-ferent configurations. WT-1/1A configuration files are very small and can easily fit on the cards that come with many digital cameras. Sim-ply place a different configu-ration file onto each card, la-bel them and you can rapidly switch between setups in the field!

Step 17 Step 18

When complete click the Save button to add the new profile to the library. Select the new profile from the list on the left and press the Send to Card button .

Place a Compactflash card into a card reader attached to the computer running ITP. This card will be used to help automatically configure your WT-1 transmitter from the computer. Press the OK button to move to the next step.

Step 19 Step 20

From the provided dropdown select the drive letter that is assigned to your Compactflash card reader. The profile will be saved on this card for upload to the camera as soon as you hit the Ok button.

When you see this window the profile has been successfully saved to the card. Click the OK button to dismiss the dialog and close the WT-1/1A Configuration dialog.

Step 21 Step 22

Remove the Compactflash card from your computer and insert it into the D2H with the WT-1 attached. Wait for the green light to go out, then press the Menu button. Navigate to the Set Up tab (the bottom tab) and continue on to the next step...

Select the Wireless LAN entry and press the controller pad right to configure the WT-1 transmitter.

If the profile was not properly loaded onto the card the ‘Load settings file?’ entry will be greyed out as shown in the following screen capture:

If this happens, please return the Compactflash card back into the computer. Return to the W T-1 Configuration Manager (as shown in step 14). Select the D2H profile again and press the S end to Card button.Repeat steps 18 through 25, taking special care to ensure that the drive letter specified in step 19 is correct. I t is advised that you verify your selection in Windows Explorer before going on. I f ever ything was done correctly this time, the entry should be available and you will be able to continue on.

Troubleshooting GuideThe WT-1 is a complex device and as such may experience problems when trying to set it up the first time. This section is designed to guide you through the process of identifying those problems and rectifying them.

Symptom: Flashing Power LEDThis scenario usually occurs when there is a conflict between the settings that have been uploaded into the camera. There are a number of

issues that can cause this problem and the following section covers a number of them and their solutions.

Step 1: Ensure settings have been loaded properly.Sometimes the WT-1 will not properly load all of the settings from the memory card. It can be very sensitive to how you leave the menus after loading the settings file. Please carefully repeat steps 22-27 in the instructions in order to load the settings again. If it is still not connecting properly, please check the settings in the camera and compare them to the ones listed in the instructions contained in this document.

Step 2: Verify that the DNS and Gateway were disabled. The 16th step requested that you uncheck the DNS and Gateway checkboxes in the configurator. Please return to the WT-1 configuration window and select the profile you created. Select the TCP/IP tab and check to make sure that these boxes are unchecked - if they are not, uncheck them and repeat steps 17-27 to upload the corrected settings.

Step 3: Check software firewalls running on the laptop. If you are running any software firewalls on your laptop, check the settings to ensure that they are not blocking incoming FTP traffic. Each product works in a different way so detailed directions are beyond the scope of this document.

Firewalls are designed to protect computers from outside threats. One of the mechanisms used to do this is to block any connection that did not originate from the computer/network. For normal users this typically isn’t a problem as the tasks they perform are initiated by the user. The WT-1/1A, however, works in a different way. When an image is ready to be transmitted, the camera is the one that initiates the connection. As such, in their default configuration, most firewalls will attempt to prevent this action from taking place. When that happens, the WT-1 will be unable to connect to your computer. In order for the WT-1 to function correctly, the firewall must be configured to allow incoming FTP traffic (TCP/IP port 21). The way that you do this depends on the firewall being used, so please read the instructions that came with it.

Symptom: Solid Link LEDWhen the camera is trying to connect to the server but has not run into an error yet it will display this pattern with its LEDs. This can

happen because of a number of problems that are covered in the following paragraphs.

If it is still not connecting properly, please check the settings in the camera and compare them to the ones list-ed in the instructions contained in this document.

Step 2: Double check SSID values. The SSID settings in the computer and camera are sensitive to things like case and leading/trailing spaces. Return to step 8 and verify that the Network name (SSID) field is set to D2H with no extra spaces. If that doesn’t help, then return to the dialog in step 15 to make sure the SSID field has the same contents.

Step 3: Verify that laptop is connected to the camera.Return to the Wireless Networks tab (see step 6) and verify that the laptop is connected to the camera. Check the Preferred Networks list and verify that the connected icon (see ) is shown beside the D2H entry.

If it is not connected, the first thing to do is verify that the computer has been configured to attach to ad-hoc networks. Return to the window shown in step 10 and verify the settings have taken.

Close the Advanced and Wireless Network Connections windows to apply the settings. If the transmitter still isn’t working, right-click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and select View

Available Networks ( ) with the WT-1 still on.On the resulting window, select the D2H entry ( ), then check off the checkbox marked . Click the connect button and the laptop should connect. If the D2H entry is not available make sure that the WT-1 is still on. If it is then double check the settings in the camera.

Continued from previous page...

Step 4: Verify that ITP is running properly.Right-click on the ITP icon ( ) in the system tray. If the Start Server entry is not greyed out, select it. Try the WT-1 again to see if it is working. If ITP is already running then try to connect to 192.168.0.10 with FTP client software. If you are unable to connect then double check your settings in ITP and any firewall software you are running.
